Camp Kennedy Space Center 2026
Camp Kennedy Space Center (KSC), located at KSC Visitor’s Center, invites students aged 7 to 16 to take part in a program focused on NASA-based science, technology, engineering, and math. Starting at $450 plus tax, the program runs weekly from May 25 through July 31.

Each year, more than 1.2 billion smartphones are produced globally. The production of electronic devices uses a lot of energy and takes valuable natural resources. Meanwhile, devices are aging faster than ever — users replace their still-functional phones on average every 2 to 3 years. Although the most sustainable solution would be to change people’s behavior and consider more carefully whether their new model truly needs replacing, this is easier said than done.
Therefore, proper solutions are needed — such as extending the lifespan of devices by giving them an entirely new purpose. This is the approach tested by researchers from the University of Tartu. They showed that old smartphones can be successfully repurposed into tiny data centers capable of processing and storing data. These tiny data centers have a wide range of applications. For example, they could be used in places like bus stops to collect real-time data on the number of passengers, which could then be used to improve public transportation networks.
In the project’s first stage, the researchers took out the phones’ batteries and replaced them with external power sources. Then, they put four phones together, added 3D-printed covers and holders, and made a working model. The model was then tested underwater, where it surveilled sea life. Normally, these kinds of tasks require a swimmer to record video and bring it to the surface for researchers to review. But with the model, the whole process was done underwater without human help.
The team’s results show that outdated technology doesn’t have to end up as waste.
