Madrid is a popular destination which is considered a city of contrasts with its plentiful historic sites, resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers.
History
This city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe’s largest royal palace, and some consider it to be Madrid’s most beautiful building.
Inside the royal palace 2,800 rooms are decorated in glory with museum quality furniture and artworks. Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms.
Shopping
Madrid has some of Europe’s best shopping malls, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for bargains. But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea market known as the Rastro which is noted for selling everything from antiques to CDs.
Entertainment
No trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain’s famous art form, flamenco. Every day, flamenco performers sing, dance or play the guitar in small cafes and grand theaters alike.
Food
Madrid has a wide variety of restaurants but because the Spanish typically eat late at about 9 or 10 pm, it’s difficult to find good dinner food earlier. If you get hungry before then, the best solution is to try a tapas bar where light snacks are served. Be sure to try the jamon,a kind of dry-cured ham: Spain is famous for it.

Frank Herbert’s science fiction Dune was the first coming-of-age story that helped me survive me lonely junior high school. At age 12, my life was the liny, boring cycle of home, school and my parents store. Dune broke it all open and led me to a universe that made my little world a lot more bearable unlike Holden Caulfield who kept breaking windows in The Catcher in the Rvehy J. D. Sailingèr, Dune’s main character, Paul Atreides, equipped me with a junior-high survival guide.
Paul is not a classic underdog. He’s the son of a king. He’s been trained since birth in war arts, politics and critical survival skills by a group of smart and experienced men with impossible-to-pronounce names. But when his world is turned upside down — when he leaves his home, loses his father and enters a physically and politically hostile environment — he doesn’t complain and cry. He adapts.
To this day, I can still recite his words against fear: “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total destruction. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
The steady diet of literary fiction assigned by my teachers was escapist (逃避现实的) and the very act of reading (whatever the content) usually took me out of a given moment, but didn’t provide much advice on how to face my daily conflicts and painful insecurity.
Dune was escapist, too. However, it was expansive and literally redefined possibility for me who had been struggling along with eyes on the ground, just trying to make it through another day of boredom and hardship of being a teenage girl. Paul lifted my eyes up so I could see the stars.
24. Who created the character Paul Atreides
A.The author of this passage.
B.J. D. Sailinger.
C.Holden Caulfield.
D.Frank Herbert.
25. Which can best explain the underlined word “hostile” in paragraph 2
A.Sensitive.
B.Unfriendly.
C.Unbeneficial.
D.Private.
26. What does Paul impress the author most
A.His survival skills.
B.His noble birth.
C.His courage to face fear.
D.His escapist attitude.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.The plot of Dune was more complicated than other fictions.
B.The author learned much knowledge of stars room Dune.
C.Paul helped the author escape from the real world.
D.The author changed her attitude towards life owing to Paul.
C
All baby animals are cute. Seal pups (海豹幼崽) are no exception. One such pup, a spotted seal pup, about 20 days old, was found on the beach in Panjin, Liaoning Province, by the local people. Among those who rescued the seal pup were Li Yue, of the Fisheries Law Enforcement Command (FLEC) team, and volunteer Tian Jiguang, founder of Panjin Wetland Protection Association.
“The seal pup was found with a fishing net around its neck. Seals, even seal pups, have a violent temper. So when we approached it to remove the fishing net from its neck, it thought we would harm it and turned aggressive (富于攻击性的) like an angry dog. But the more it struggled, the tighter the net became. Eventually, it realized that we meant no harm, and allowed us to remove the net,” said Tian.
Spotted seals’ intelligence is roughly equal to that of a four-year-old child and even young seals can survive on their own in the wild. But since the rescued pup was just about three weeks old and wouldn’t have survived the harsh environment of the open sea without its mother, it was not released into the sea immediately.
Spotted seals are relatively shy, difficult to approach and generally live alone, though they form large groups during pupping and molting (换毛) seasons when they walk slowly on ice or on land, which nowadays is often the case. Perhaps that’s why the pup was aggressive when approached.
“We took care of it for a day, and then sent it to the Liaoning Ocean and Fisheries Science Research Institute in Dalian for treatment and examination. Only after we are sure the pup has developed the ability to survive in the wild will it be returned to the sea,” said Li, captain of the FLEC team. Li generally rescues several spotted seals every year.
28. What does paragraph 2 focus on
A.The process of rescuing the seal pup.
B.The new life of the trapped seal pup.
C.The habit of the spotted seal pup.
D.The approach to removing the seal pup.
29. What can we learn about spotted seals from the text
A.They form groups when hunting.
B.They have a great survival ability.
C.They are cleverer than young children.
D.Their pups are always fighting with each other.
30. What may happen to the seal pup next
A.It will be examined by the FLEC team.
B.It will be taken care of by volunteers.
C.It will be released into the sea immediately.
D.It will stay at the research institute for a while.
31. Which is the best title for the text
A.A Seal Pup Was Released into the Sea
B.Seal Pups Were Protected by Volunteers
C.A Seal Pup Was Rescued by Nearby People
D.An Injured Seal Pup Attracted People’s Attention

The Volkswagen Golf has historically been the German car maker’s best-selling model, but surprisingly it’s not the company’s best-selling product. That title goes to the extremely popular and reportedly delicious VW sausage.
VW has been producing sausages at its car plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, for nearly 50 years. The traditional sausage is such an important part of the company culture and history that it even has its own car part code, 199 398 500 A. Sausage production at VW began in 1973, and was originally supplied exclusively (专门地) to company canteens, to feed its staff. Over time, however, Volkswagen started selling its sausages at stadiums and in German stores, and people loved them. It’s said that because the sausage was originally created for company staff, it is of the very best quality, and it has actually won several awards at national food fairs and exhibitions over the years.
Even though 40% of the roughly 6.7 million Volkswagen sausages produced by the car maker’s food department are consumed by its employees, the demand outside the VW is large. The majority of sausages are sold through a large network of supermarkets and enjoyed in households in 11 different countries.
In the beginning, VW produced its sausages from beef and pork meat sourced from a company-owned farm, but that isn’t possible today, due to increasing demand. Still, the meat is sourced from regional farmers and the quality is as high as ever.
The recipe of VW sausages is a closely guarded secret, but according to some sources, one of the reasons for its success is the high meat and low fat content. Beef was cut out from the recipe during the 1990s BSE (疯牛病) crisis, but the pork used is only 20% fat, compared to the 35% or more in most other sausages. The meat is mixed with salt, pepper and curry (咖喱), and stuffed into 13 cm or 25 cm membranes (膜状物).
32. What do we know about VW sausages
A.They are produced in food factories.
B.They are VW’s best-selling products.
C.They are mainly supplied to the local markets.
D.They have their own food code in the company.
33. Why did VW start making sausages
A.To feed its employees.
B.To make use of the car plant.
C.To expand the company’s business.
D.To support the company-owned farm.
34. What can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4
A.The company-owned farm needs enlarging.
B.Better meat is needed for VW sausages.
C.VW sausages are gaining in popularity.
D.New sales strategies are expected to be added.
35. What contributes to the success of VW sausages
A.The VW’s good name.
B.The elegant packaging.
C.The exceptional marketing skill.
D.The proper share of meat and fat.

The prize may go to the fastest, but sometimes, the first one to cross the finish line isn’t the only winner. Nowhere was that more true than at a recent 5K invitational (邀请赛) in Shelbyville, Indiana.
There were two players in the match: Levi LaGrange and Axel Aleman, who hadn’t known each other before. Levi LaGrange, an 18-year-old student from Western Boone High School, has been expecting to be a professional sportsman for many years. Axel Aleman, who is from Sheridan High School, is a friendly and generous person and he is always more concerned about others than himself. Axel once said to his classmates, “When you are standing at a crossroad, you can choose the path of self-interest, or you can go the extra mile for someone in need. As a teen athlete, the choice is extremely clear.”
The game went very well at first. However, with less than half a mile to go, Levi LaGrange slipped, twisting his ankle. He said, “I was running up the little rolling hill and I hurt my ankle. I felt something was wrong with my ankle.”
Levi stopped and signed to Axel to pass him. Generally, winning a match should be the mission for a sportsman, But at that moment, the race became a secondary concern for Axel. “I was able to see he was in a lot of pain,” Axel recalled. “As I got closer to him, he narrowly fell down. I asked if he was all right. He said he felt like something broken in his leg.”
Rather than running ahead, in an extraordinary act of true sportsmen, Axel refused to leave Levi behind. “As soon as I saw him, I knew I had to do something,” Axel said. “It just seemed like the right thing to do. That mattered more than the race. I told him I wasn’t going to leave. I wanted to help him finish the match.”

Recommend Rope Skipping
I’d like to recommend rope skipping as our break-time sport. It only needs a skipping rope and little space, so everyone can take part in it easily.
Rope skipping brings many benefits. It relaxes our tired brains after long hours of study and builds up our bodies quickly. Besides, we can skip alone or compete with classmates, making breaks full of fun.
I hope more students will try this great sport.
67.读后续写范文
Minutes later, Axel walked closer to Levi. He gently put one arm around Levi’s shoulder and supported him to stand steadily. Levi tried hard to move forward but winced with every step because of the painful ankle. Axel slowed down his pace completely, matching Levi’s awkward steps step by step. Crowds along the track watched the scene in silence, then warm cheers burst out loud. Ignoring the chance to win alone, Axel kept encouraging Levi all the way until they crossed the finishing line side by side.
Axel gained a lot from the incident. Though they shared the first prize together, Axel valued the friendship more than the medal. Reporters interviewed him later, and he told them true sportsmanship meant caring for rivals rather than only chasing victory. From then on, Levi and Axel became close friends, often training together. This unforgettable race taught Axel that kindness and respect always shine brighter than winning.
