I once thought that outward beauty was the only factor to become a great person. When I was young, I read many kinds of books, most of which described characters who are handsome or beautiful. So I thought that being beautiful was the only way to become a success.
As I grew up, the story of my best friend made me realize that outward beauty was not so important to make a person successful. She was so beautiful a girl that every classmate liked to chat with her, but she was very arrogant (傲慢). In her opinion, she could get all she wanted because of her beauty, but all of her friends left her one by one! Only then did she come to know the importance of the beauty in a person’s heart, which changed her attitude and she made friends again.
Turning on TV, we can see many advertisements, most of which seem to give us a feeling that physical attractiveness is the most important thing. There seems to be a boom in plastic surgery. It is surprising that more and more people, especially girls and women, try it like the first man-made beauty in China, Hao Lulu. It is a common sense that attractive people can easily find work. Most good-looking guys usually get higher scores in the job interviews. But, what is real beauty I want to say that is inner beauty because those who have beauty in their soul are really beautiful persons.
As is known, the beauty judged with eyes is temporary, so we should concentrate on inner beauty. And if we make efforts to make our minds beautiful, we’ll live a happier life.
4. Why did the author want to have a good appearance when she was young
A.Because she wanted to be one of the characters in the books.
B.Because she wanted to get higher scores in the job interviews.
C.Because she wanted to follow the example of her friend.
D.Because the successful characters in the books she read were attractive.
5. Why did the writer refer to her friend’s story
A.To show how important outward beauty is.
B.To show how terrible it is to be a beautiful girl.
C.To show the importance of the beauty in a person’s heart.
D.To show how beautiful her friend is.
6. What does the underlined sentence in the third paragraph mean
A.A large number of people pay attention to outer beauty.
B.Surgery is becoming more and more popular.
C.More people can afford the price of doing plastic surgery.
D.The living standard has been improved over the past years.
7. Which of the following covers the passage best
A.How do attractive persons become successful
B.Inner beauty is the real beauty.
C.The key factor to find a good job is being attractive.
D.Plastic surgery is the best way to make a person more beautiful.

All languages change over time. New vocabulary is often required for the latest inventions or ideas. But a language can also change for reasons that are not clear.
Language changes whenever speakers communicate with each other. People from different places clearly speak differently, but even within the same small community, people speak differently depending on their age, origin, and social and educational background. When we communicate with these different speakers, in different situations, we hear new words and expressions, and can make them a part of our own speech. Even if your family has lived in the same area for generations, you can probably see a number of differences between the language you use and the way your grandparents speak. When enough time has passed, the influence of these changes becomes clearer.
During the 18th century, Jonathan Swift, the Irish writer, and many other people felt the English language was in serious decline (衰落) and that a national organization — like those in France and Italy — should be created to save the language. Swift once wrote that we should find a way to stop our language from changing. Even today, we hear people complaining about a lack of “standards (标准)” in spoken and written English. New words and expressions, or changes in grammar, are often considered bad.
More experts believe that change in language is unavoidable. Change is a way of keeping a language alive and useful, and gives speakers different ways of saying things with extremely small differences of meaning and ways of expressing completely new ideas. The organizations set up in France and Italy have had little success in reducing the amount of change in French or Italian.
In 1747, Samuel Johnson wrote about his desire to write a dictionary that would fix the pronunciation of English and keep it pure (纯正的). But when he completed the dictionary ten years later, he admitted in his introduction that fixing a language was impossible. Like it or not, language is always changing and English will go on doing so in many creative and — to some people — annoying ways.
8. What can we learn from the second paragraph
A.Some people learn to speak better than others.
B.The youth should learn from their grandparents.
C.Language change is greatly influenced by people.
D.Language changes little if people stay in the same place.
9. What does Jonathan Swift think of language change
A.He thinks it is hopeful. B.He thinks it is unclear.
C.He agrees on the change. D.He doesn’t agree on the change.
10. Why did Samuel Johnson decide to write a dictionary
A.To create some new words. B.To include some foreign words.
C.To keep English pure from changes. D.To record the changes in English.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A.Why does language change B.Written English needs standards.
C.Does language change influence society D.How to protect the language.

Holidaymakers typically rely on experienced tour guides and local companies to recommend excursions (短途旅行) to castles and spectacular waterfalls, but the world’s biggest tour operator says it will entrust (委托) the service to artificial intelligence instead. The German travel company Tui has started using Chat GPT in its app to provide holiday recommendations, in the latest sign of traditional businesses racing to harness AI.
The travel company said its new Chabot would provide “informative responses about holiday destinations and personalized recommendations for excursions, activities and attraction tickets”. The firm is also exploring using the technology in post-holiday customer communication, language translation of its content and in coding.
The future development of generative AI Chabot that can comb through huge amounts of data in seconds has led to possibility of increasing job cuts as humans become too expensive. Tui employed 61,000 people at the end of last September, but it cut thousands of jobs during the coronavirus pandemic.
Tui believed that its use of generative AI would not replace humans. A spokesperson pointed to a call center in the Netherlands that it is more quickly to search using Chat GPT, cutting waiting times on phones. “Gen AI is rapidly replacing tasks but not jobs,” said Pieter Jordan, the travel group’s chief information officer, in an interview with German media. “However, humans using Gen AI will far outperform (胜过) humans without the help of Gen AI.”
The bot handled a request for the “best destinations in France”, offering Paris, Nice, Bordeaux, Lyon and the French Alps (along with three links to Tui holidays) and a question about the user’s preferred city. But then it was unable to understand the word “Paris”. It said: “I apologize for the confusion, but I am an AI travel assistant and do not have personal preferences.” Only when told “I am interested in Paris” did the app offer well-known sites, including the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame.
Sebastian Elbe, Tui Group’s chief executive, said Chat GPT would “help simplify services or make information more easily available”.
12. The underlined word “harness” can best be replaced by_________.
A.control B.design C.fight D.improve
13. Which of the following is not true concerning AI Chabot
A.They can provide personalized recommendations.
B.They are able to offer post-holiday services.
C.They can get huge amounts of data in seconds.
D.They will make the cost of human resources cheap.
14. What can we learn from Pieter Jordan’s comments in paragraph four
A.Gen AI is rapidly reducing jobs that are outdated.
B.Gen AI can far outperform human beings in difficult jobs.
C.Gen AI cannot replace humans but help them with different tasks.
D.Gen AI can lead to immediate job losses.
15. How is paragraph five developed
A.By comparing. B.By quoting. C.By taking examples. D.By listing figures.

Good Reasons to Keep a Diary
Some call it a diary. Others say log, journal, or notebook. Whatever the word, the key idea is that you create a written record of your thoughts, feelings and memories regularly. Some people do it because they like writing. 16 But the starting point is less important than the journey itself. Here are some reasons why you should start a diary today.
First, writing about your feelings and experiences can help reduce stress and anxiety. Keep in mind that the benefits of keeping a diary depend on how frequently you write and how honest you are. Writing regularly, whether it be daily or a few times a week, is usually more beneficial than writing infrequently. 17 Don’t just write what you think others want to hear.
Second, keeping a diary can help improve your memory, as you can reflect on past experiences and remember details that may have been forgotten. Writing stories down can improve memory and serve as a reminder of the meaningful things that happen in your life. 18
Besides, writing in a diary can make you more imaginative and creative. It can also be a good way to come up with ideas for future projects. 19 Smart thoughts and novel solutions are often the result of simply taking the time to write about a problem.
20 It can be a good way to reflect on your daily activities and see what you’ve achieved. A diary is a record of your experiences and reflections over time, which can help you see how you’ve grown and changed as a person.
A.Others are forced by schoolwork.
B.Also it’s important to be honest with yourself.
C.Finally, writing down your goals can keep you motivated.
D.You could keep track of important events that you might otherwise forget.
E.Keeping a correct and complete personal history can be extremely useful.
F.Finishing a diary entry can also provide a sense of achievement and satisfaction.
G.We feel safer coming up with new ideas when we know no one else will see them.

After dinner, Mother told Mickey and Lori that there would be no money for Christmas presents this year.
The children looked very disappointed. They went out into the backyard to talk it over.
“I don’t mind so much. What I don’t like is seeing little May and Jo disappointed. They count on getting something so much. They’ll cry their poor little eyes out,” said Mickey.
“Whatever happens,” said Lori, “we must make sure that they get something.”
Both Mickey and Lori loved their baby sisters very much, and always did everything they could to make them happy. They couldn’t bear the thought of the little girls waking up on Christmas morning to find their stockings empty.
“I’ve got a great idea. Let’s make them a fine dollhouse. I can make the house and put in the door and windows, and you can make the curtains and glue wallpaper on the walls,” said Mickey. “What a great idea!” said Lori. “That won’t cost us a penny. Let’s begin right away.”

So they began to work at once. They searched the backyard and storage room for abandoned wooden boxes, old cloth and leftover wallpaper. Mickey cut and nailed wood to build the main frame of the dollhouse, carefully carving small doors and windows. Lori sewed soft tiny curtains with colorful old cloth and pasted delicate wallpaper inside. They kept working late into midnight, tired but full of joy, decorating every corner of the house with small recycled decorations.
Christmas morning came at last. As soon as May and Jo woke up, they rushed to the living room and spotted the beautiful handmade dollhouse beside the Christmas tree. They screamed with delight and couldn’t wait to touch every small part. Mother watched them with warm tears in her eyes, deeply moved by the selfless love of Mickey and Lori. That Christmas, the homemade dollhouse became the most precious gift the little girls had ever received.
