When I was a teenager, I did a six-week summer learning camp at a college. It helped kids get a taste of what college was like. We had classes in the morning and the evenings were filled with fun activities. We did have a break in the afternoons. One afternoon, my friend Claude and I found an old basketball. We went to an outdoor basketball court for a game of one-on-one (一对一).
At that time, Claude was taller than me. He was also better at basketball. Gradually (逐渐), I fell behind. I made up my mind and drove hard to the basket, but missed it! The ball bounced off the rim (篮筐边缘). Just as I jumped up to catch it, I saw an elbow (肘) above my face. When Claude caught the ball, his elbow hit my eye hard. I saw stars everywhere. The pain was terrible. Claude kept saying “sorry” over and over. I laughed through the pain.
I spent the next few days walking around with a black eye, but it was worth it. For years, afterward, I got a laugh whenever I told the story and joked about Claude’s elbow of death. We all get an elbow to the eye sometimes. Our plans fail. Things work against us. Our ups become downs. When this happens, it’s best to face it with laughter and forgiveness (原谅). In this way, you can turn your pain into joy and you can learn and grow.

Pencils are common tools for writing and drawing. They look simple, but they have an interesting history.
It all started in the 1500s. People in England found graphite (石墨). It is a special material and can leave marks on paper. So it was very good for making writing tools. At first, people put graphite in string (细绳) or wooden tubes (木管) to use it. The modern pencil appeared in the 17th century. Workers made pencils by putting graphite into wood. Artists and architects (建筑师) began to use pencils for their work.
A big change came in 1795. Nicholas-Jacques Conte was an officer and a good engineer. At that time, Europe had no more pure graphite. Conte had a good idea. He mixed graphite with clay (黏土) and heated it. This new material was just as good as pure graphite. By using more or less clay, he could make pencils softer or harder. These pencils helped artists and writers work better.
Conte put this material into wood. This made pencils clean and easy to use. We still use this design today. Conte died in 1805. People remember him as the inventor of the modern pencil.

Mum and Dad have always tried their best to make sure I grow up happily, and I wanted to do something for them. I decided to help them to wash the dishes. But I didn’t want to do it in a simple way. I was going to be the best washer-up (洗盘子的人) in the world!
