Calvin was a little bird born into a big family. Unlike his brothers and sisters, Calvin did not enjoy learning to fly or playing with each other. Instead, he loved going to the library. He lost himself in books about nature, planets, and weather. The other birds called him “Bookworm” and “Nerdy Birdie”, but Calvin just kept reading.
When autumn arrived, it was time to fly south for the winter. Calvin’s sister asked him, “Can you fly ” He just kept quiet and walked away. The day to fly south arrived, the flock flew into the sky without him. Calvin was left standing on the ground with tears in his eyes.
But his family did not leave him behind. They flew back, found some strings, and tied Calvin safely. Together, they lifted him up and carried him through the air. For days, they flew over rivers and mountains that Calvin knew from his books. Calvin was very excited.
Then one day, the wind blew hard and the air smelled strange. Calvin remembered his weather book. “Hurricane!” he shouted. “A huge storm is coming! We must hide!” The other birds did not know what a hurricane was, but they trusted Calvin. They all followed him into a safe, dark place. While the strong wind mixed with heavy rainfall outside, Calvin told them stories about hurricanes from his reading. Thanks to Calvin and his books, the flock stayed safe.
When the sun came out, the birds celebrated. Calvin was so happy that he jumped, and flapped his wings. And then — something amazing happened. Calvin was flying! He could fly after all.

Under the thick ice of Antarctica, scientists have built the world’s first global ice vault. Its job is to save important records of Earth’s changing climate. It will keep ice cores taken from mountain glaciers all over the world for hundreds of years.
Ice cores work like natural time boxes. Each layer of ice in a core forms from falling snow. Inside the ice, there are small air bubbles, dust and pollution from long ago. With these things, scientists can learn about the air, temperature and weather from thousands of years ago.
Since the year 2000, glaciers have lost about 5% of their ice worldwide. This means important climate information has been lost. That is why scientists race to collect ice cores and send them to the Antarctic ice vault.
Scientists collect ice cores step by step. They first pick cold, high places with thick ancient ice. Then, cut deep into the ice by using an ice core drill. After taking out the ice cores, cut them into long pieces and mark each part. This helps them know the age of every ice layer. They store them in cold boxes to stop melting, and finally send them to the vault for climate research.
This great project is run by the Ice Memory Foundation. This is a group of European research centers that started in 2015. So far, ice cores from many European and global mountains are kept in the vault. In the future, more ice cores will be collected. They will help future scientists study climate change with new technology and better understand our planet’s past and future.
