For the past week, Ken and I have been visiting local parks and school grounds. As his father, I’ve watched Ken patrol (巡逻) the area with his trusty (可靠的) trash picker and gloves, picking up whatever litter caught his eye, rain or shine.
This all started after we visited a beach. Ken said he felt bad for Earth. The next day, he woke up and asked to go back to the beach. What surprised me was that Ken said he wanted to clean it. We compromised (折中) and went to a park instead. That day,Ken also cleaned the streets on the way to and from the park.
When I asked Ken, “What do you want to do tomorrow " he replied, “Can we go to a different park ” I couldn’t refuse him. I said, “Well, we could clean the schools.” And that’s what we did. He’s really crazy about this cleaning mission (任务) and I’m not going to discourage him. In just one week, Ken has cleaned every park, school and public space we could get to in our community. Even when we went for a simple afternoon walk,Ken tagged along (跟随) with his bucket, cleaning the streets as we went. It seems that cleaning has become second nature to him and litter is the trigger (诱因) .
When he said he wanted to do this every day over the summer, we didn’t realize how serious he was. But he wouldn’t stop it, and my wife and I are proud of him even though he’s just doing something as simple as picking up trash. It amazes me that at 6-and-a-half years old, he made the decision to achieve something, all on his own.

We can feel different things on different days. Sometimes we feel sad because we had an argument with a friend and sometimes we feel worried about something. It’s important to understand our feelings and learn how to show them so that we don’t make our friends, our family and ourselves sad.
Babies and children show their emotions by laughing or crying because they can’t say what they feel and why. As we grow up, we learn how to understand how we are feeling. This is called emotional awareness (意识). It also helps us have good relationships with other people.
When we feel strong emotions or we are stressed there are chemicals (化学物质) in our brains that can make us feel happy, angry or sad. This chemical is called cortisol. It can be good for us because it gives us energy. However, if we feel too stressed then we have too much cortisol in our brains and it’s difficult to sleep.
When you see your friends, you might be able to work out what they are feeling by their faces. It’s good to think about how other people are feeling too. For example, if your friend is sad that he didn’t get onto the football team and you are sad with him, you are sharing his sadness—this is called empathy. Have you ever seen that your dad is angry when he has to tidy your things If you think about how your dad feels and understand that he’s doing extra work and why he might feel angry...that’s also empathy.
Empathy and emotional awareness are important for all relationships—at home, at school and at work when we are older. It helps you understand more about the people and the world around you.
11. What is emotional awareness according to Paragraph 2
A.The ability to argue with friends when we feel angry.
B.The ability to understand our own feelings.
C.The ability to control the chemicals in our brains.
D.The ability to make friends with others.
12. What will happen if we have too much cortisol in our brain according to Paragraph 3
A.It will give us energy to deal with different problems.
B.It will help us build better relationships with others.
C.It will make it hard for us to get a good sleep.
D.It will make us feel less stressed and become calm.
13. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.Babies are able to express their feelings clearly by talking.
B.Empathy means we can understand and share other people’s feelings.
C.Emotional awareness is not necessary for workers at factories.
D.We will produce cortisol only when we feel really happy.
14. How does the writer help us understand “empathy”
A.By explaining it through an experiment. B.By giving examples in daily life.
C.By comparing it with emotional awareness. D.By listing numbers to show its importance.
15. What is the main idea of the passage
A.How to deal with bad feelings and improve relationships.
B.The differences between emotional awareness and empathy.
C.Two important abilities about feelings and their importance.
D.How cortisol in our brain influences our feelings and sleep.

All societies have customs about how to eat politely. In English, we call these customs “table manners”. Based on culture and locations, table manners can be quite different from place to place. 16
In some cultures, it’s polite to serve food to guests. However, people don’t do this in other cultures. 17
In most East Asian countries, people use chopsticks at table. 18 Do you know that in some places people simply use their hands to eat And in some places, only their right hands
In Russia, it’s polite to leave a bit of food on the plate to show the host that there was plenty to eat. But in India, finishing the food on the plate is polite. 19
In France, it is impolite to say you’re full. If you don’t want any more food, you should just say, “That was delicious.”
20 So when you visit another place or another country, take time to learn the local customs and manners. Remember, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
