Why not find a new friend this year—yourself! You may want to get love and care from a good friendship. Well, you shouldn’t have to go far to find it.
Loving yourself, also called self-love, means being as kind to yourself as you are to others. Give yourself the love and care you should give to your friends and family. Becky Goddard Hill, the writer of Create Your Own Confidence, says it means speaking to yourself with kindness. It also means taking really good care of your body and mind.
Studies show that self-love is good for your schoolwork, health and friendships. Self-love makes you believe in yourself. It makes you feel that you deserve good things, such as kind friends and fun experiences. It doesn’t mean you’ll be happy all the time, but when you face difficulties, you won’t upset yourself.
Start by being kind instead of being angry. When you make a mistake, don’t get angry with yourself. Tell yourself that everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Then work out what you could do differently next time. Remember that no one is perfect. Becky suggests writing down your strengths as they can help you remember how excellent you are. “Looking at the list often will help bring out the best in you,” says Becky.

Every day, we eat, sleep, and work, but most people also want more free time for their hobbies and interests. Maybe they want to play more sports, learn a musical instrument, or even write a book, but they don’t have the time. It’s a problem for many but the answer is simple when your hobby is also your job!
Leyla Kazim is a good example of how to have a passion and make money from it. Leyla loves travel, photography, and food, so she writes a blog. “I spend most of my time either eating, travelling, or creating content about the two,” she says. Leyla’s blog has more than 100,000 followers and because the blog is so popular, she also works with food companies and restaurants.
Michael Gazaleh is another person with a hobby that’s also his job. He loves running in his free time and he also loves showing people his home city of New York. So his company, City Running Tours, gives tours of cities to people who also like running. “Every day, we get to run with wonderful people from all over the world,” he says. Michael’s company now has running tours in 14 different cities in the US and Canada.

You’re lying on the sofa and feeling bored. Then you start watching short videos on your phone. The first one is about a dog. It is not interesting, so you move on to another. You keep switching videos and hope to find something more interesting. But it doesn’t make you feel less bored. In fact, scientists find that switching from one video to another will add a feeling of boredom and make you feel even worse.
Scientists did a study with over 600 people in 2022. In the study, people watched short videos in two different ways. In the first way, they could switch videos if they didn’t like the one playing. However, in the second way, they had to finish watching one video before moving to the next. The results were surprising. When people could switch videos freely, they actually felt more bored. But when they couldn’t switch and had to fully focus on one video, they enjoyed it much more.
Sam Green is one of the experts in the study. He says switching videos very often can make the watching experience meaningless. That’s because people don’t have time to think and take it in. “If people want a more delightful experience when watching, they must try to truly enjoy what they watch and refuse video switching,” Sam says. “Just like paying for a great film experience in a theatre, we often enjoy the videos more when we watch them fully instead of switching from one video to another.”
27. What can we infer from Paragraph 1
A.Short videos are always uninteresting.
B.People often watch short videos with a clear purpose.

Zhalong is a nature reserve in Heilongjiang in northeast China. It is one of the world’s most important wetlands. The area provides food and shelter for wildlife. It is an ideal home for different kinds of plants, fishes and birds.
Many birds live comfortably in Zhalong Nature Reserve all the year while some only stay for a short time. There are many fish in the wetlands and the birds can easily catch them for food.
Some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings. This means that there will be less and less space for wildlife.
More and more birds are in danger because they do not have enough living space now. Many of them died. The Chinese government wants to protect these endangered birds and they can be safe in Zhalong.
Every year a lot of tourists go to Zhalong to watch birds. This year members of our Bird-watching Club are going to study the different kinds of birds in Zhalong and the changes in their numbers. The study will begin next month.
We do a bird count once a year. We are now inviting secondary school students to help. We need more people to help us count and do something to help the birds.
