三、阅读理解
A
Last spring, our English teacher Ms. Wang asked our class to take part in a monthly volunteer activity. At first, most of us were unwilling. We thought volunteering would take up our study time and there was nothing fun about it. I still remember my first volunteer day at the old people’s home near our school.
When we walked into the yard, several elders sat quietly on wooden chairs. No one talked loudly, and the air felt cold. My task was to chat with Grandpa Li, an 82-year-old man who lived alone after his wife passed away three years ago. At first, we just sat there without words. I felt so embarrassed that I wanted to run away. Later I took out my notebook and showed him the pictures I drew in art class. His eyes lit up at once. He told me he used to draw mountains and rivers when he was young, and he shared many old stories about his village.
In the following months, I visited him every second Saturday. I brought him warm tea, helped clean his room, and listened to his life stories. Slowly, I changed my idea about volunteering. It was not a boring task but a way to connect with different people. Last month, Grandpa Li gave me a hand-painted fan as a gift. On the fan, he wrote: “Kindness is the warmest light in the world.”
This term, our class started a volunteer group online. We post volunteer plans every week, and more students from Grade Eight join us. Some help stray cats in the community, some teach poor kids English after school, and others clean public parks. I realize that small acts of service can make great changes. We don’t need to do big things to show our love; just spare a little time for people around us.

24. Which activity is NOT mentioned in the online volunteer group
A.Feed stray animals. B.Tutor poor children.
C.Plant trees on mountains. D.Clean public places.
25. What’s the main idea of the passage
A.The importance of staying with the old.
B.How to start an online volunteer group.
C.The writer’s change and understanding of volunteering.
D.Interesting stories from the old people’s home.

Nowadays, many middle school students face heavy pressure from their families. A survey of over 1,200 Grade Eight students in our city shows that nearly 70% of teenagers feel stressed because of their parents’ high expectations. Most parents wish their kids to get full marks in every subject and enter top high schools, but few of them stop to listen to their children’s true feelings.
Li Jia, a 14-year-old girl in our school, shared her trouble. Every day after school, her mother takes her to three after-school classes: math, physics and English. She has no free time to do her favorite painting or hang out with friends. Once she tried to talk with her mom, saying she felt too tired to keep learning all day. However, her mom shouted at her: “I spend so much money on your classes, how dare you give up easily ” After that, Li Jia no longer opens her heart to her parents, and she often stays up late to finish endless exercise books.
Psychologist Mr. Chen gives three useful suggestions for parents and teenagers. First, parents should set proper goals instead of pushing kids too hard. Good grades are important, but teenagers’ mental health matters more. Second, both sides need active communication. Teens should express their stress politely instead of keeping silent or arguing. Parents should put down phones and spend 20 minutes every day talking with their kids about daily life, not only scores. Third, every family should leave some “free time” for teenagers to develop hobbies, such as sports, reading or handcrafts. Hobbies help them relax and reduce stress quickly.
Many students wrote letters to the school newspaper after reading Mr. Chen’s advice. Some said they would have a calm talk with their parents this weekend, while parents promised to cut down extra training classes. Good family communication can solve most teenage pressure problems.
26. How many students in the survey feel stressed from parents’ expectations
A.About 360. B.About 700. C.About 840. D.About 1200.
27. What’s Li Jia’s favorite hobby
A.Drawing. B.Playing sports. C.Reading novels. D.Playing the piano.
28. Why didn’t Li Jia talk with her mom anymore
A.Her mom never had time for her.
B.Her mom got angry when she expressed tiredness.
C.She was too busy with after-school classes.
D.She thought her mom would not understand study stress.
29. Which piece of advice is NOT from Mr. Chen
A.Parents shouldn’t set too high study goals.
B.Talk about scores all the time at home.
C.Teens need enough free time for hobbies.
D.Communicate politely with family members.
30. What’s the best title for Passage B
A.How to get good grades easily.
B.Teenage stress and ways to solve family problems.
C.Why parents push kids hard on study.
D.The bad side of after-school training classes.

The Volunteer Activity That Changed Me
Last Sunday, I took part in a volunteer activity in the old people’s home near our community. We helped clean their rooms and chat with the lonely elders.
An old grandma impressed me most. She told me lots of warm old stories and shared her handmade paper-cuts with me. I felt sorry that few young people spend time staying with them.
Before this activity, I only cared about my own study and never thought about others’ feelings. Now I learn that love and company are the best gifts for the old. I decide to do volunteer work every month from now on.
