暑假阅读建议

Mike the Octopus
Mike is a smart octopus in the city aquarium. He has eight long arms and can do amazing tricks. He can open small bottles, wave his arms to visitors and even play with colorful balls.
Sally is an 11-year-old girl. One Saturday, she goes to the pool with her mom. Sally feels really sad that day. She sits quietly by the glass and doesn’t want to talk. Mike swims close to her. He waves his arms slowly.
Sally looks up and smiles little by little. She stays there for the whole afternoon, watching Mike’s funny shows. When she leaves, all her bad feelings go away. Workers in the aquarium say Mike is everyone’s happy friend. He always tries his best to cheer up sad kids.

Chinese Beautiful Fans
About 4,000 years ago, Chinese people made the first fans. At first, people used fans to keep away sun and rain. Later, they used fans to cool down in hot summer.
In the Zhou Dynasty, people made expensive feather fans for rich families. Cattail-leaf fans became popular for common people in Han Dynasty. Then round moon-shaped fans appeared. Girls loved them, with beautiful flower and animal embroidery.
Folding fans came out in late Song Dynasty. They were cheap and easy to carry. Students liked writing poems and drawing on them.
Now we have over 500 kinds of fans. Many people wear Hanfu and hold fans when taking photos. Fans are great Chinese culture gifts for foreign friends.

The Ugly Duckling

On his way, he met a cat and a hen. He asked to stay with them, but they said no. The cat could catch mice and the hen could lay eggs, but the duckling could do nothing like them.
One cold spring morning, he walked to a lake. He saw three white swans with long necks. He wanted to swim to them, afraid they would laugh at him.
When he looked down at the water, he was shocked. He turned into a beautiful white swan! The swans smiled and welcomed him. At last, he found his real family.

A Special Guide Horse
Most blind people use guide dogs, but Mohammed doesn’t like dogs. He chooses a small horse named Digby as his guide.
Digby gets lots of training. It walks slowly in front of Mohammed, helps him cross streets, pick up books and choose clothes when shopping. Digby is around 80 cm tall. It cannot go to Mohammed’s office, because it knocks many things off desks.
Later Digby gets a new job. It works for blind visitors in London streets. Guide dogs can only work for 8 years, but guide horses can live and work for about 50 years. They can be people’s lifelong helpful friends.
