According to the National Federation of the Blind, fewer than 10 percent of the 1.3 million legally blind individuals in the United States can read Braille (盲文) — a figure that has barely budged in decades. Yet against this discouraging backdrop, one woman has quietly changed countless lives, including that of my son.
Thirty-five years ago, my son Jared was born with total blindness. It was his teacher that recommended Seedlings Braille Books for Children to my family. At that moment, I never anticipated that this non-profit institution would exert a profound influence on my son’s life trajectory. Founded by Debra Bonde, Seedlings originated from a humble voluntary program driven by a special personal motivation.
Debra was, by her own admission, painfully introverted. She wanted a volunteer job that required no conversation. So, she signed up for a braille transcription class, imagining herself in her Detroit basement, transforming children’s books into braille, undisturbed. She began transcribing popular titles, printing them on a braille printer, and selling them for only the cost of the paper.
Word spread quietly among parents and teachers of blind children. Demand quickly outgrew her basement. With help from friends, Debra established Seedlings as a nonprofit, securing grants and donations to cover production costs. She named it “Seedlings” because, as she explains, “if you give a child a book, the love for reading will grow.” To date, Seedlings has produced over 600,000 books, half given away free, half sold at an average of $10 — roughly half the actual production cost.
For me as a mother, Seedlings offered something beyond affordable books. It gave Jared what educators call “typical” experiences. He built a home library. He chose books like any sighted child. Without the literacy skills Seedlings helped provide, Jared would never have become the software engineer he is today.
Currently, Debra no longer finishes all the work alone in her basement. Nevertheless, her original initial intention — helping others modestly without attracting public attention — has never faded and lies behind every braille book produced by her team. The success of Seedlings conveys a powerful message: there is no need to make spectacular speeches or pursue widespread fame to make a difference to the world. Powered by artificial intelligence (AI), researchers have recaptured the chirp of the critically endangered Australian Plains-wanderer (领鹑) in Melbourne’s western suburbs — a sight unseen for more than 30 years.
Zoos Victoria has placed 35 sound recorders, known as “song meters”, in Victoria’s Volcanic Plains. Using a set of AI call recognizers designed by Museums Victoria Research Institute and Queensland University of Technology, the song meters are detecting the species’ unique calls in the area where the species was once common. Tens of thousands of hours of monitoring have identified Plains-wanderer calls from one private and one public-owned site. Further monitoring will continue until the end of 2026.
Plains-wanderers are commonly said to be the “Goldilocks” of the animal kingdom as they require very specific habitat conditions to survive. They are genetically different from any other species on the planet and have their own evolutionary line, ranked number one on the Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered bird list.
Once widespread throughout the grasslands of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, it’s now estimated that there are fewer than 1,000 Plains-wanderers remaining in the wild, primarily in two remaining strongholds in Victoria’s Northern Plains and the New South Wales Riverina.
