Lucky the Homeless Puppy
Last rainy Sunday, Lily met a thin homeless puppy near the park. Its body was wet and it shook with cold. Lily felt sorry for it and decided to take it home.
Her parents agreed to keep the dog and named it Lucky. Lily fed it warm milk and gave it a soft small bed every night. She took it out for a walk after finishing homework.
Lily’s grandma lived alone next door. Lucky often ran over to stay with her when Lily was busy. It lay beside grandma’s chair and kept her company. Grandma was no longer lonely.

Chinese Zodiac Animals
The Chinese zodiac has twelve animal signs, and each year matches one animal. There is an old story about how these animals got their order.
Long ago, the Jade Emperor held a river race. The first twelve animals to cross the river would get a year named after them. All animals hurried to the river bank.
The mouse was small but smart. It climbed onto the ox’s back. When they nearly reached the end, the mouse jumped forward and won first place. The ox came second. The tiger, rabbit, dragon and other animals followed one by one.
Cats missed the race because the mouse tricked it. That’s why cats always chase mice now. Today many people check their zodiac sign to know their personality. It is a famous part of Chinese culture.

Never Give Up
Tom was bad at running. Every time he ran long distances, he felt tired and wanted to stop. His PE teacher asked him to join the school running meet. Tom shook his head and wanted to give up at once.
“Running is not just about winning,” the teacher told him. “It’s about beating yourself.” Tom took the advice and practiced every morning before class. He ran around the playground for 20 minutes each day, even on hot days.
On the meet day, Tom fell behind other runners at first. He wanted to stop again, but he thought of his daily practice. He kept moving his legs and finished the race. He didn’t get a prize, but he ran much faster than before.

Glowing Fireflies
Fireflies are special small insects that can glow at night. Many kids love watching them fly in summer grasslands.
Inside their bodies, there is a special light part. When they turn it on, soft yellow light comes out. They glow for two main reasons: first, to find partners; second, to tell dangerous animals “I taste bad, don’t eat me”.
Fireflies can only live near clean rivers or lakes. If the water becomes dirty, they will move away or die. Now fewer fireflies appear in cities because of water pollution.
To protect fireflies, we should take care of water around us and stop throwing rubbish into rivers. These lovely glowing bugs are a beautiful gift of nature.
