Last month, I took part in a national violin competition in Serbia. Before the big day, I had practiced my piece so many times that my fingers felt numb (麻木的).
On stage, the lights were so bright that I could not see the audience (观众). I started well and felt calm. However, in the middle of the piece, my bow slipped (滑了一下). It was a small mistake, but to me, it felt very big. My heart beat fast, and I thought I had messed it up. I was very nervous and could hardly focus on (专注于) the rest performance (表演).
I finished the piece and knew it was not my best. Soon the result came out, and I was given second prize. I felt very sad and kept thinking about that moment. I could not forgive (原谅) myself for the careless mistake.
That night, my sister sat next to me and spoke in a soft voice: “You love music. That is why you feel this way.” I said nothing. I picked up my violin and played that part again. This time, I played it right.
I felt calm inside. I understood something: Winning or losing is not the most important thing—my love for music is. And I will keep playing.

As little Robert was taking a walk, he suddenly shouted, “Hey, hey!” To his surprise, he heard the same words come back to him.
Feeling playful, Robert said, “You must be a very silly (愚蠢的) person!”
“Silly person!” came back the words from somewhere on the hill.
Robert got very angry. He said more bad and mocking (讥讽的) words, but they all came back to him in the same angry tone (音调). He decided to walk toward the hill to find out who was mocking him.
However, when he got to the hill, he couldn’t find anyone there. He felt sad and confused, so he went back home and told his mother about the “bad boy”.
His mother explained to him that when he spoke loudly near a hill, the sound waves (波) could bounce (反弹) back and make an echo (回声). It was like throwing a ball against a wall and having it bounce back to you. The “bad boy” was just the echo of his own voice.
His mother went on, “If you speak kindly, you will hear a kind reply (回复).” Robert couldn’t wait to run back and try. This time, he spoke in a sweet, gentle (温柔的) tone, and the voice came back just as sweet and gentle. Robert smiled.
24.Why did Robert get angry

Every year, people around the world celebrate great books on April 23, World Book Day. This year, China has also set the fourth week of April as National Reading Week, making the celebration last longer. So why is reading important
Just as exercise makes our bodies strong, reading makes our brains work better. It helps us think clearly and use our imagination (想象力) more freely. Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, US, have even found that reading can lower a protein (蛋白质) connected to Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病).
Reading can open our eyes to new words and new ideas. Because of the internet, many people now use only simple everyday words or slang (俚语) to describe things. Reading can improve our vocabulary (词汇), helping us express ourselves more clearly. Reading also helps us understand life better. Famous Chinese writer Yang Jiang said reading is like “visiting a teacher”. “Once we open a book, we can step right into their world,” Yang wrote in The Bitter-Sweetness of Reading (《读书苦乐》). “We can visit them as often as we like, at any time, and learn many things from them.”
As the English philosopher (哲学家) Francis Bacon once said, “Reading maketh a full man; conference (讨论) a ready man; and writing an exact (严谨的) man.” Reading not only trains our minds but also helps us better understand ourselves and the world.
28.What can we know about reading activities from the passage
A. National Reading Week falls on April 23 every year.
B. China has a reading activity for a whole week in April.
C. World Book Day is celebrated in the fourth week of April.
D. People around the world celebrate National Reading Week together.
29.What can we infer (推断) from Yang Jiang’s words
A. We can visit famous writers face to face easily.
B. We can chat with writers freely every day in books.
C. We need real teachers if we want to learn new things.
D. We can learn a lot from great people anytime by reading.
30.What does the writer mainly talk about in the passage
A. Why reading is important for us.
B. What we can learn from famous writers.
C. How exercise and reading change our life.
D. How people celebrate World Book Day around the world.
四、任务型阅读-简答:本大题共1小题,共6分。
31.I can still remember my primary school homework on animals. I chose to write about whales. I have loved them from a young age.
I’m not quite sure why I love them. It might be something about their shape. They have a smooth (流畅的) shape, and their tails look like a heart. They also move so slowly and beautifully, like a tree dancing in the wind.
One of my best memories was seeing a type of whale called the Southern Right Whale in Argentina. Watching them move smoothly in the water, I felt happier than ever. They were so beautiful!
And I’m not the only one who loves whales. Different people around the world also have a special place in their hearts for whales. Take the Maori people in New Zealand as an example. Living by the ocean (海洋) they see whales as guardians (守护者) of the ocean and talk about them a lot in their traditional stories.
I was also interested in whales because they need our protection. That’s what my school homework was about—animals we need to protect. Whales play a big role in the food chain (食物链) in the ocean. So, protecting whales means protecting the whole ocean.

Luckily, my patient teacher helped me a lot. She encouraged me to speak bravely. After class, I read English articles daily. Step by step, I made progress and gained confidence.
This experience teaches nothing is impossible if we keep trying. Constant practice and others’ support help us beat all difficulties.
