Ernest Hemingway wrote The Old Man and the Sea in 1952. The story is about an old fisherman named Santiago.
For 84 days, he caught no fish at all. People thought he was the most unlucky man in the village. But a young boy named Manolin still believed in him. He brought the old man food and talked with him every day.
On the 85th day, Santiago went far out into the sea. Early the next morning, a huge marlin (a big sea fish) bit (咬) his line. The fish was so strong that it pulled the boat for two days and nights. Santiago fought hard. His hands were cut and tired, but he never let go of the line. He even talked to the fish like a friend. Finally, he killed the marlin and tied it to his boat.
On the way home, sharks came. They smelled the marlin’s blood. Santiago fought them with his knife and oar (船桨). He killed many of them, but more kept coming. By the time he reached the coast, only the bones of the marlin were left. He walked back home, very tired and hurt.
The next morning, the villagers saw the huge skeleton (骨架). They were surprised. “He is still the greatest fisherman,” Manolin said.
From the story, we know that true success is not about winning, but about never giving up when we get into trouble. Santiago’s courage makes the story very touching.

A heat wave is a period of quite hot weather. The daily high temperature is above 35℃ for more than three days. It is one of the most common natural disasters, but many people do not know how it forms or how to stay safe during it.
Most heat waves start with a high-pressure system (高压系统) in the air. This system is like a “lid” to keep warm air near the ground and stops the clouds from forming. Without clouds, the sun’s light hits the Earth directly. As a result, the air gets even hotter. Besides these natural causes, global warming and human activities also lead to rising temperatures, making heat waves take place more often.
Heat waves do great harm to humans. They may hurt our skin and cause serious health problems, like heart disease and breathing troubles. Besides, it is also hard for people to work and play outdoors in hot weather. Older people, children and outdoor workers are in the greatest danger.
There are simple ways to stay safe in a heat wave. Keep your home cool and choose cool clothes. Don’t forget to drink lots of water. If you go outside, do it early or late, wear light clothes and a hat. They can make the body feel much cooler. These tips will help you stay safe during strong heat.
31. When does heat wave happen
A.Over 35℃ for 1 day. B.Over 35℃ for over 3 days.
C.Below 35℃ for over 3 days. D.Never over 30℃.

C.Only natural reasons cause heat waves.
D.Outdoor work brings more health risks in hot days.
35. Where can read this passage
A.Money management book. B.Online safety guide.
C.Natural disaster magazine. D.Chinese culture newspaper.

In modern life, phones and computers are everywhere. They help us with schoolwork and are fun to use, but too much screen time can be harmful. 36
The first step is to know our screen time. Most phones can show us how much time we spend on different apps. 37 We might find that we spend two hours each day playing games. This way, we can see where our time goes and know what changes we need to make.
Once we know our habits, it’s time to make some rules. A simple rule is not to use our phones during meals. 38 A second good rule is to avoid screens before bedtime so that we can get better sleep. Following these rules will make our lives healthier.
39 For example, try reading books, drawing pictures, or playing outside with friends. We can also help with cooking at home. These activities are fun and give our minds a break from screens. They also help us learn new things.
Remember that phones and computers should work for us, not control us. 40 Let’s use technology wisely so it helps rather than harms our daily lives.
A.The information helps us know about our habits.
B.So it’s necessary for us to learn to use them wisely.
C.It is also a great idea to find other things we like to do.
D.This way, we can enjoy the good parts of technology and stay healthy.
E.This helps us pay full attention to our food and the people we are with.

The book I want to introduce is Journey to the West. It tells a story about four travelers who take a hard long trip to get sacred scriptures. The Monkey King is my favorite hero. He is brave, clever and never gives up when meeting bad monsters.
I love this book so much, so I want to share it. It teaches me to keep trying and face difficulties bravely. Besides, it carries wonderful traditional Chinese culture. I hope more foreign teenagers can read it and know more about China.
