I grew up in the countryside. I didn’t understand what it brought to me until I became an adult. It helped me learn more useful skills than the people who grew up in cities.
I learned to cook at about 10 years old. The first skill I learned was making dough (面团). I thought it would be easy because I often saw my mom do it—just mix water and flour (面粉), right Not quite! It was either too soft or too hard at first. But as I kept trying, I learned how to do it. Later, I cooked fried dishes and things like dumplings. Thanks to my cooking skills, I can eat anything I want. Now I cook every meal instead of buying food from the Internet. It saves money and I don’t have to wait for others to feed me.
Besides cooking, I did a lot of farm work in my childhood. I got to know how to plant vegetables. Though it was hard work, I learned a lot. For example, the part of a potato that has sprouts (芽) can be planted as a seed (种子).
I discussed it with others. Some might say we can learn these things from textbooks. But it can’t compare to the joy of doing it yourself. It brings a new way to look at the world.
This may be why I was so happy when I heard the news that China would have labor education (劳动教育). Students in primary and middle schools should have at least one class every week from September 2022 to learn skills like cooking and cleaning. Trust me. These useful skills will help you for the rest of your life.

Cao was born in Beijing, but left home at 20 and studied and lived in the USA, the UK and France for over ten years. Seeing so many cultures, Cao wanted to use her drawing skills to show the differences that she saw. So she created Tiny Eyes Comics.

The one from China is hot.

Good news for primary and middle school students: You may get more holidays! This year, for the first time, the Government Work Report mentions “spring and autumn holidays for primary and middle school students”. It encourages schools to offer these holidays to students. “Spring and autumn holidays will be meaningful and relaxing —they can offer students more time to rest and enjoy their beautiful country,” Gao Jinfeng, the headmaster of a school in Jiangsu province, told China Education Daily.
To help make the breaks successful, other ways may also be introduced. For example, parents may enjoy more paid leave so they can spend time with their children during these holidays. Places such as museums and science centers may also open to students for free. It lets them take part in more social and educational activities.
With government support, students will have more time to relax and enjoy nature at its best. Some areas have already started piloting the policy (政策). In 2025, students in Zhejiang province began enjoying spring and autumn breaks first. Later, several cities in Jiangsu, Sichuan, Guangdong and Hubei also introduced the policy. Most areas have the spring break around Tomb-Sweeping Day (清明) and the autumn break in November, usually close to a weekend.
