一、阅读理解
Is it OK to be late in different countries
★ Rose Friends, you won’t believe this! Last summer, I went to Greece and rushed to catch the ferry (渡船) — I got there 1 hour early, but the ferry was 15 minutes late! The locals just laughed and said it’s normal. The biggest travel fail isn’t losing your luggage — it’s not knowing the local time rules!
Jeff Oh, it’s common to be late in Spain. Let me give you a tip: For dinners with friends: Arrive a little late! Trust me — everyone does this. I once arrived on time and stood outside the restaurant for almost 20 minutes, feeling really silly.
☆ Liu Shuang Ecuador is even wilder! I worked there for two years. Everyone was usually 10 to 20 minutes late, and they lost so much work time! I’m the type who’s never late for anything. It was such a big change for me!
● Lulu Wait, let’s talk about South Korea — it’s totally different! Very punctual (准时的), even early! I went to a restaurant 30 minutes before its closing time, but they said they stopped taking customers 1 hour earlier. And once I met my friend’s parents — they showed up 30 minutes early. I felt I was a little impolite.

I will never forget my trip to a foreign city last summer. I went there with my brother. It is a city full of history, which my brother is interested in.
Usually, the temperature there during the summer is around 35℃. But the heat there last summer was exceptional. It felt like the sun was a big fire hanging right above us.
One afternoon, the news said the temperature reached 48℃. The air was so hot that it was hard to breathe (呼吸). We felt like being inside an oven. My brother took cold showers many times a day just to feel a little better. The government (政府) told everyone, “Stay inside between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Drink water. Wear light clothes.” There was nobody in the streets under the burning sky.
I later learnt why the weather was so different. The city cut down about 70% of its trees to build more roads and buildings. Those missing trees were like missing friends who used to give people cool air. Without them, the city had no protection from the sun’s strong heat.
This trip made me think deeply. We often build roads and buildings without thinking of the trees and the land. The city’s heat is not just its own story; it is a warning to the world. How do we treat nature Do we see it as a friend to protect, or just space to use The answer will decide our future.

Last Sunday, my classmates and I went to the Sunshine Old People’s Home. We arrived there at 9 a.m. Firstly, we cleaned the rooms for the elderly. Then, we sang songs and chatted with them happily. Seeing their smiles, I felt warm inside. Although I was tired, I was very proud. We left at 11 a.m. This experience taught me that helping others is helping ourselves. It was truly meaningful. I hope to join more volunteer activities in the future.
