Qinqiang Opera is one of the earliest forms of opera in China. It started during the Qin Dynasty. At that time, common people used it for fun and comfort. Qinqiang Opera usually shows the daily life and feelings of ancient Chinese people. In 2006, Qinqiang Opera was added to China’s National Intangible Heritage List (国家级非物质文化遗产名录).
Hou Yan, the master of Qinqiang Opera, started learning it from her mother when she was four years old. Training in the basic skills of Qinqiang Opera is very challenging. In 1985, Hou studied at an art school. She practiced hard every day and her hard work finally paid off. Hou became a performer of a troupe (剧团) at the age of 16.

However, after 1995, our country made great efforts to develop traditional culture. Hou returned to the stage in 2000 and devoted herself to the traditional opera. “I have planted my roots on the opera stage,” said Hou. In 2021, they staged about 150 school performances. Now, Hou’s team puts on hundreds of performances every year in the towns and villages.
“As we become more confident in our culture, more young people will consider traditional culture as a fashion and become promoters (推广者) of our own culture,” said Hou.

I’m so glad to hear you are coming to China. Since you’re worried about how to behave well when meeting your host family, let me share some important local customs with you.
First, when you meet them for the first time, you can shake hands gently and smile warmly. You’d better bring a small gift like some fruit to show your thanks. Second, it’s polite to use chopsticks when you have meals with them. Don’t stick chopsticks straight in rice, it’s bad manners. Besides, always speak softly and listen patiently when they talk to you.
I believe you will get along well with your host family. Wish you a wonderful trip in China.
Yours,
Li Hua
