Jake was playing outside when he found a possum (负鼠) stuck in the window well (窗井). “Hey there,” he said softly. But the possum shouted at him sharply. Unlike the cute, friendly possums in his picture books, this one looked angry and scared, so Jake took a slow step back.
Just then, his elder brothers Artie and Danny walked over. “Wow, a stuck possum! Let’s start our action: Rescue Possum!” they shouted. They rushed back to the house, where they began talking about building pulleys (滑轮) and using a sandwich as bait to make it come near, so they could help it out.
Jake watched them for a minute and thought their plan sounded too difficult. Quietly, he found a long, strong board in the house. His brothers were so busy with their plan that they didn’t notice him carrying the board to the window well. He carefully put one end into the well and the other end on the ground, making a rising board right next to the possum.
The possum shouted at the board, but Jake said gently, “Calm down. It’s safe.” He climbed up to his treehouse to wait.
After a few minutes, the possum smelled the board, then touched it with one hand. Slowly, it climbed up the board and out of the well, running into the woods behind the house.

Have you ever looked up at the sky and wished you could tell what the weather will be like You don’t need a high-tech machine to do this. Studying clouds is one of the oldest and easiest ways to tell the weather.
Cirrus clouds (卷云) are thin, like horse tails. They form very high in the sky, and are made of tiny ice crystals (冰晶). When you see them, it usually means the weather will stay nice and clear.
Next are cumulus humilis clouds (淡积云). These are white clouds that look like sheep. They stay low in the sky. They often come with bright sunshine and blue skies, so they are a sign of good weather.
Cirrostratus clouds (薄幕卷层云) are thin, sheet-like clouds that also form high up. They are made of ice. If you see them in the morning, rain is likely to come soon.
Nimbostratus clouds (雨层云) are low, dark clouds that cover the whole sky. When they roll in, rain or snow is on the way. The good thing is that they don’t bring lightning. Instead of sudden, heavy storms, they cause long lasting rain or snow.
Finally, cumulonimbus clouds (积雨云) are tall and huge, like mountains. They form when air rises very quickly, and they are most common in summer. These clouds are a red flag: they mean a thunderstorm is nearby.
The sky has a lot to tell us if we just look up. By learning these cloud types, you can tell the weather by yourself.
36.If you see cirrostratus clouds in the morning, what should you do
A. Climb up high. B. Take an umbrella.
C. Stay indoors all day. D. Wear cool clothes.

43.【答案】My Growth Experience
This term, our school held a series of growth-themed events with many wonderful activities. I took part in the Volunteer Service.
I chose this activity because I wanted to improve myself and learn to care about others. Every weekend, we went to the old people’s community. We tidied up their rooms and read newspapers to them. We also listened to their life stories and shared our school life.
This activity has helped me greatly. I used to be shy and self-centered. Now I am patient and good at getting along with others. I’ve learned true happiness lies in giving others warmth. This special experience made me a more responsible person. I will keep doing volunteer work in my free time.
