The Grammys celebrate the best in music, but, behind every songwriter, performer, and producer that makes it to that stage are music teachers and educators who inspired them from a very young age. That’s why the Grammy Awards also hands out a Music Educator Award, which recognizes those who have contributed significantly to and really care about music education.
This year, the award went to Annie Ray, the performing arts department chair and orchestra (管弦乐队) director at Annandale High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. With the creation of the Crescendo Orchestra, she works to make music accessible to all students, especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (智力和发展障碍). Additionally, she created a parent orchestra, in which 200 caregivers learn to play the same instrument as their child every year.
Ray won a $ 10,000 prize and the same amount for her school’s music program. In an interview, Ray credited her pupils for this recognition. “This is the students’ award,” she said. “I’m just lucky enough to have been a part of their journey and their process and to have been taught by them.” The educator also got to attend the main Grammy ceremony, where musicians and other celebrities approached Ray to praise her efforts. “Many people came to tell me that a music educator changed their life,” Ray said. “And that was really touching.”
Now, Ray will use the prize money to buy instruments — something the school had struggled to do. She also plans to create an ongoing scholarship for students who want to become musicians and music educators when they graduate.
For Ray, the moment appears to be full circle, since it was a music teacher who first changed her life at age 5, when she learned to play the harp (竖琴). “The reason why I am where I am is that a teacher changed my life and made me want to be a music educator,” she said.
4. What is the purpose of the Music Educator Award
A. To raise funds for school music programs.
B. To reward the best songwriters in the industry.
C. To help excellent music students with disabilities.
D. To honor those who greatly influence music education.
5. How did Ray feel about winning the award
A. Confident. B. Doubtful. C. Grateful. D. Nervous.
6. What can we infer about the school’s financial situation before Ray won the award
A. It was well-funded by the local government.
B. It had difficulty affording musical instruments.
C. It offered rich scholarships for music learners.
D. It refused to spend money on music programs.
7. What does Ray’s experience mainly show
A. Teachers can pass hope and dreams on.
B. Musical gift can decide one’s future path.
C. Awards and public praise bring endless benefits.
D. Family education can inspire children’s lifelong hobbies.

Toronto’s Kensington Market, a lively neighborhood in the heart of Toronto, is a living museum of cultural diversity that has developed over more than a century. Founded in the late 1800s as an immigrant community, the market has grown into a famous global melting pot where different cultures coexist peacefully, creating a unique urban landscape that fully shows Canada’s core multicultural identity.
Walking through its narrow, tree-lined streets, visitors experience a rich sensory feast of global cultures. Portuguese bakeries sell warm, fresh pastries (糕点) next to lively Caribbean jerk chicken stands, while Vietnamese noodle shops sit next to real Mexican taquerias and cozy Ethiopian coffee houses. In September 2023, NASA’s powerful James Webb Space Telescope (望远镜) made an exciting discovery — a distant planet named K2-18b, located 120 light-years away, showed strange gas signals in its air that might be linked to ocean life. This marks the first time scientists have found possible signs of alien life using telescope data.
The telescope found a gas called dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in the planet’s air mixture. On Earth, this gas is only generated by tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton. “It’s like smelling seaweed on another planet,” explained Dr Nikku Madhusudhan, an astronomer from Cambridge University. The findings were shared in a famous science journal.
How did scientists do this The Webb telescope used a “color analysis method”. When K2-18b passed in front of its star, the telescope studied how starlight changed as it filtered (渗入) through the planet’s air — similar to how sunlight creates rainbows. Different chemicals leave unique “color fingerprints”. After checking 278 times, scientists finally spotted DMS clues in the messy data.
But experts warn this isn’t confirmed yet. “We might need 10 more years of observations to be sure,” said lead researcher professor Pierre-Olivier Lagage. While volcanoes could sometimes generate similar gas, K2-18b’s conditions make life more likely. The planet sits in the “Goldilocks zone” where temperatures allow liquid water (液态水), and earlier studies suggest it’s covered by a giant ocean.
NASA plans to launch a new telescope in the 2030s to study chemicals on such planets in detail. China’s upcoming Xuntian Space Telescope will also join the search. “If we confirm this is truly alien life,” said professor Lagage, “it will completely change how we see our place in space.”
For now, the discovery has sparked global excitement. K2-18b’s data is stored on a special hard drive at the Space Telescope Science Institute, waiting quietly for future scientists to unlock more secrets. As Dr Madhusudhan put it, “We went looking for starlight patterns and found a cosmic mystery that could rewrite biology textbooks.”
12. What does the underlined word “generated” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Produced. B. Absorbed. C. Tested. D. Monitored.
13. How did scientists locate the gas signals
A. By tracking the planet’s moving orbit.
B. By analyzing starlight changes repeatedly.
C. By measuring the planet’s temperature regularly.
D. By comparing rainbow shapes with nearby stars.
14. Why might K2-18b possibly hold life
A. It is much closer than other planets.
B. Its volcanoes produce DMS gas naturally.
C. It owns proper temperature and liquid water.
D. It has the same gas composition as Earth entirely.
15. What does professor Lagage say about confirmation
A. It will explain alien life’s being.
B. It will uncover ocean worlds in space.
C. It will reshape our view on the universe.
D. It will prove the necessity of the new textbook.

For many addicted to digital devices, a complete tech break sounds increasingly attractive, which is called digital “detox (排毒)”. ____16____ This tech-free reset idea has gained huge popularity. But does digital detox actually work
____17____ It is not just fully giving up all digital tech, but just partly avoiding overused features or apps. More and more people try detoxes to get attention control back and build healthier digital habits. Still, popularity doesn’t prove effectiveness. While positive online reviews sound believable, they are often one-sided.
The findings, however, tell a more complex (复杂的) story, opposite to popular belief. No strong evidence proves total, short detoxes bring long-term benefits. ____18____ The simplest approach is limiting daily phone use, rather than total avoidance.
Then how does digital detox work to improve well-being Our “non-smart phone study” offers clear explanations. We found the improvement comes from changes that are all connected. At its key part, it cut overall digital media use, which in turn freed up daily time for meaningful offline activities. ____19____
To get the most out of detox benefits, start with practical steps. Identify harmful content, replace screen time with joyful offline activities, and reduce phone use in social settings. ____20____ In our digital world, it is more than a passing fashion — it’s a practical way to protect your attention and well-being.
A. Why is it called digital detox
B. This ensures long-term effectiveness.
C. What does a digital detox really mean
D. Troubles come from changes in mind and daily behavior.
E. Most importantly, this keeps people stay fully present in real life.
F. It includes weekend getaways from screens and detox apps that help you quit other apps.
G. Instead, the best effects lie in small, lasting changes over at least two weeks.

It was a cold winter afternoon. Emma was walking home from school through the park near her house when she heard a strange sound. It was a soft, weak cry — like an animal in trouble. She stopped and looked around. At first, she could see nothing but bare trees and fallen leaves. Then she heard the cry again, coming from behind a large bush.
Slowly, Emma pushed the branches aside. There, lying on the ground, was a small, injured bird. Its left wing was bent at an unnatural angle, and it was shaking from the cold. The bird looked up at her with dark, frightened eyes, but it was too weak to move.
Emma’s heart ached. She knew she couldn’t just leave the bird there to die in the cold. She gently picked it up, wrapping it carefully in her soft scarf. “Don’t worry, little one,” she whispered. “I’ll take care of you.”
When she got home, her mother helped her find a small box and line it with an old towel. They placed the bird inside and set the box near a warm radiator (暖气片). Emma used a small dropper (滴管) to give the bird some water. The bird drank a little, but it still seemed very weak. “It needs professional help,” Emma’s mother said. She found the phone number of a local wildlife rescue centre. Emma called them, and they told her to bring the bird in the next morning. That night, Emma could hardly sleep. She kept getting up to check on the bird, making sure it was still breathing.

School Science Festival Goes off with a Bang!
To celebrate the successful launch of Shenzhou-23 crewed spacecraft, our school held a big Science Festival last week.
To honor China’s space achievements and inspire students’ love for science and aerospace, the festival featured various wonderful activities. We attended lectures on space knowledge, which helped us learn more about China’s space exploration. In Science Workshop, students tried different experiments and took part in spacecraft model making. On Friday afternoon, every class designed activities with the theme of space.
The festival not only broadened our horizons but also developed our love for scientific research and everyone is looking forward to next year’s Science Festival.
【答案】参考范文
The next morning, Emma carefully carried the box to the rescue centre. The facility was bustling with activity, filled with the sounds of various animals. A kind vet greeted Emma and gently examined the bird. She confirmed that the wing was broken but assured Emma that with proper care, the bird would likely recover. Emma felt a wave of relief, though she felt a bit sad leaving her little friend behind. The vet promised to update her on its progress, and Emma left the centre feeling hopeful, knowing the bird was in the best possible hands.
A few weeks later, Emma received a phone call from the rescue centre. The news was heartwarming: the bird had fully recovered and was ready to be released back into the wild. Overwhelmed with joy, Emma rushed to the centre. Staff members handed her a small carrier, and together they walked to a nearby park. When Emma opened the door, the bird hesitated for a moment, looked at her, and then took flight, soaring high into the blue sky. Watching it disappear into the distance, Emma smiled, her heart swelling with pride for saving a precious life.
