It’s important that kids are encouraged to shoot for the stars when it comes to their dreams. But nothing can replace
the impact of seeing someone, especially someone similar to them, making those dreams come true. This is the impact that
Mar Galcerán is having now that she’s been appointed to a position in the Spain’s parliament (议会 ). This makes her
Spain's first parliamentarian with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征).
Galcerán entered the political world at 18 years old by joining the conservative People’s Party(PP). Ever since then,
she’s worked hard to make a positive impact. In doing so, she’s proven to be a qualified candidate for the parliament.
In May 2023, the PP created a list of ranked candidates with Galcerán in 20th place. This ranking and a former
parliamentarian’s stepping down to take on a new role made way for Galcerán to make history.
“It’s extraordinary,” Galcerán says. “Society is starting to see that people with Down syndrome have a lot to
contribute, though it’s a very long road.”
While the 45-year-old is happy to share that she’s received lots of support, she doesn’t shy away from acknowledging
those who question her ability to do her job.
“You find all sorts on social media,” she says in regard to the reactions she’s received. “There are people who support
me. But there are also others who think I'm not capable. But these are people who don't know me or my background.”
Between Galcerán’s inspiring attitude and her determination to make positive changes in Spain, she’s sure to also
leave a lasting impact on others who have disabilities, serving as a reminder of what is possible.
“I want to learn how to do it well for Spain and more importantly, for those of us who have different abilities,” she

2024 was the hottest year on record, yet it might also be one of the coolest years of the rest of your life due to a
phenomenon known as shifting baseline syndrome (基线漂移综合征).
This mind trick causes people to grow used to the environmental conditions they currently experience, leading to a
gradual decrease in societal environmental standards. It can act as a powerful barrier by reducing social recognition of the
problem. For instance, younger generations often perceive current environmental conditions as unexceptional, even when
older generations see them as significant declines.
“The last two years have been kind of supercharged,” says Gavin Schmidt, a climate scientist. Temperatures have
been climbing at a quicker pace, and “2023 and 2024 stand out.” In part, this is due to a recent El Nino, an event in which
warming in the tropical (热带的) Pacific Ocean causes knock-on weather effects. But Schmidt says it could also indicate a
rise in human-driven global warming resulting from the fact that “we keep putting our foot on the speeding device of
greenhouse gases.” Along with the rise, scientists expect we’ll see an increase in climate-related disasters like wildfires.
In principle, shifting baseline syndrome is relevant to a wide range of environmental challenges. In a recent review
paper, scientists found many studies of shifting baselines indicate people struggle to notice gradual changes in climate,
especially younger individuals. Most of these studies were conducted in low-income countries, and many focused on
farmers. Scientists suspect people in wealthier countries are likely to be more impacted by shifting baselines because they
tend to be less directly exposed to the impacts of climate change.
“Even in places where many people are aware of the crisis,” says Adam Aron, a professor at the University of
California, “people aren’t necessarily taking action or demanding that officials do.” If we want people to change, Aron
believes “non-analytic” approaches are needed. “Non-analytic routes are standards of behavior that are accepted within
society,” he says. “My neighbors have all put up solar panels and electrified their homes. I’m going to do it, too.”

Incredible new eco-friendly sensors, inspired by spider silk and 50 times smaller than a human hair, could be used in
fields ranging from healthcare monitoring to virtual reality. Developed by University of Cambridge researchers, these
sensors can be printed on biological surfaces, from a human finger to a delicate flower leaf. They are so lightweight that
they can even be printed directly onto the soft seed head of a dandelion (蒲公英) without collapsing its structure. When
printed on human skin, the fibre (纤维) sensors fit the skin, exposing sweat tiny holes, making them undetectable to the
wearer.
Tests on human fingers suggest these sensors could serve as continuous health monitors, providing a less noticeable
alternative to large wearables like smartwatches. “The connection between the device and the surface is vital for accurate
sensing, ” said Prof. Yan Yan Shery Huang, who led the research. She also stressed that bioelectronics should be
unnoticeable to users and environmentally sustainable. These sensors can change how we interact with the world, whether
for healthcare or enhancing virtual reality experiences.
Most existing wearable sensor technologies have limitations, such as blocking air and liquids or relying on
energy-and waste-intensive production techniques. Flexible electronics, for example, are often printed on plastic films that

restrict gas and liquid passage. The Cambridge team’s approach solves this by using PEDOT: PSS, a suitable conducting
material mixed with hyaluronic (透明质) acid and polyethylene oxide (聚乙烯氧化物). The bioelectronic fibres are created
at room temperature from a water-based solution, enabling precise control over their properties.
These fibres can adapt to various shapes, from micro to macro size, without requiring image recognition. Their
production is less energy-intensive, and they generate less waste compared to traditional sensors. The fibres are also
repairable and can be washed away when no longer needed. Looking forward, the team plans to incorporate additional
functional materials into this fibre printing method, potentially allowing for integrated fibre sensors with display,
computation, and energy conversion capabilities.
