My priceless heritage from my father is a box of yellow pencils. Some are barely used, some are worn-down, but each is unfailingly functional. They remind me of his love of solving crossword puzzles. They remind me of him sitting by the window, bathed in morning light, carefully filling in their tiny boxes.
In his 80s, my father would read the day’s newspaper cover to cover, with a pleasant smile on his face. “What are you reading that’s so funny, Dad ” I would ask. “Oh, nothing. I don’t pay much attention to the news. But reading reminds me of forgotten words that help me solve the crossword. Ah, got it! 12-D, CLASH!”
When he read the papers, our dog would curl up beside him, enjoying his soft touches for an hour or two, which left me free to write without being bothered by it. He would gladly put his paper down to engage with curious grandchildren, telling them stories about language, people and places. More importantly, he would listen. It’s a good life lesson for the little ones, as they grew to appreciate that not all grown-ups are pushy or impatient. In addition, he would live his life quietly helping people, never forgetting those who had lent him a hand. He believed that more wealth did not mean greater happiness, and that no kindness should be undervalued.
While my father used words for love, I did the same for a living as a professional writer. He understood this, and that may have been why he never asked me to suggest a word or help him with a puzzle. For him, my words were precious; each held value. Actually, I learned the worth of my work through his love for word puzzles. It did not matter how much I got paid for my writing. I wrote because I loved words and I enjoyed writing stories that brought ideas to life, often for or about non-profits.
24. Why is a box of yellow pencils mentioned
A.To introduce the father’s hobby.
B.To stress the tool’s value.
C.To show the father’s collection.
D.To express the past regret.
25. Why did the author’s father read the newspaper page by page
A.To read stories for amusement.
B.To know the latest news.
C.To find words to solve puzzles.
D.To kill his boring time.
26. Which can best describe the author’s father
A.Humorous and outgoing.
B.Patient and helpful.
C.Creative and ambitious.
D.Grateful and strict.
27. Which is the suitable title for the text
A.My Love for Crossword Game.
B.My Father’s Yellow Pencil Box.
C.My Gains from Word Puzzles.
D.My Father’s Crossword Magic.

On a recent trip through the Himalayas, my bruises (淤伤) became the truest souvenirs. More personal than anything bought, they carry a unique memory. Over time, my desire for typical souvenirs has faded; I now value experiences over objects. But maybe that’s just me. Two out of three Americans bring back a souvenir from their travels, with US sales topping $21bn in 2022.
Humans have long collected objects to remember experiences. With the rise of industrialization and tourism, souvenirs became more common. Souvenirs bring back happy memories, serving as a simple way to say, “I was there.” “At the heart of our actions is a desire to feel heard, seen and connected,” explains Madarkal, a professor in India.
Travellers today are more aware of their impact on local community, but the problems caused by travel souvenirs are often overlooked. In a 2022 Australian report, up to 75% of souvenirs marketed as “local” are made overseas. Real goods are expensive due to time-consuming labour involved, so some shops sell cheap fakes (假货) with most customers giving little regard to their origins. While buying fakes may seem to support local sellers, it often minimizes the profit of the traditional handicrafts, creating a negative cycle.
So, how can you buy meaningful souvenirs “Be curious... it’s not just about buying or choosing carefully, it’s about rejecting and explaining why,” said Madarkal. Asking where an item comes from and how it is made is a good first step. Choosing unique designs over mass-produced goods at fair-trade markets helps support local communities. Intentions also matter, as souvenirs should be chosen for personal meaning rather than habit. And souvenirs don’t always have to be objects — journals or skills gained can become lasting reminders.
Ultimately, there’s no universal rule for a “meaningful” souvenir. But next time you’re grabbing a quick airport souvenir, pause and reflect.
28. What changed the author’s view on souvenirs
A.A search for adventures.
B.A desire for experiences.
C.Fear of physical injuries.
D.Changes in life stages.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The increasing popularity of souvenirs.
B.The psychological need for souvenirs.
C.The importance of modern tourism.
D.The memories tourism brings back.
30. What is the consequence of the negative cycle in paragraph 3
A.Tourism becomes more profitable.
B.Local sellers gain long-term benefits.
C.Traditional handicrafts lose the market.
D.Souvenir design becomes standardized.
31. What does the author suggest about buying meaningful souvenirs
A.Picking timeless common designs.
B.Following your own shopping habits.
C.Choosing intention over convenience.
D.Weighing possession over remembrance.

The Olympic Games represent the peak of athletic achievement. Modern athletes benefit from excellent coaching, good nutrition and recovery strategies. Yet, some are turning to unique methods to improve themselves.
One such technique is called EEG neurofeedback (脑电波神经反馈), which involves placing small sensors on the head to record and display brainwaves in real time. It helps athletes recognize and produce brainwave patterns that enhance focus and relaxation, or achieve a personalized best state for their skills. When the technique displays what is happening in the brain in real time, people can easily experiment by bringing different thoughts or images to their minds. Then they’ll immediately see how the brain signals change. It is through this process that they can learn to recognize different brain states and apply psychological strategies to help them take control.
In a study, researchers asked 40 adult volunteers to cycle until extreme tiredness on an exercise bike after performing just 12 minutes of neurofeedback. 13 people were asked to produce a brainwave pattern that would be conducive to endurance (耐力) exercise. The other 13 were asked to produce a brainwave pattern which wouldn’t improve performance. The remaining 14 participants had to watch a neurofeedback recording without controlling their brainwaves. The results were striking. The group that had been asked to produce the positive brainwave rode for 30% longer than the others.
Later, researchers invited the 26 participants from the first two groups back to the lab. They received the opposite neurofeedback treatment from the first experiment before they repeated the cycling test. The participants rode for an average of 11% longer on the day they received the positive neurofeedback treatment. Despite these results, researchers decided to repeat the study with a larger sample and with more highly-trained cyclists to better understand the role of this technique in other sports.
Scientists are now trying to use the research findings to make a difference elsewhere. The research regards neurofeedback as a potential means to help with the recovery or management of diseases of the nervous system. So, while Olympic medals are valued, if neurofeedback research could eventually lead to effective treatments beyond sports, that may well be the biggest prize of all.
32. What is the new technique EEG neurofeedback used for in sports
A.Helping build a nutritional strategy.
B.Monitoring athletes’ physical strength.
C.Training voluntary brain control in athletes.
D.Predicting athletes’ best performance limits.
33. What does the underlined word “conducive” in paragraph 3 possibly mean
A.Identical.
B.Resistant.
C.Harmless.
D.Beneficial.
34. Why were 26 participants invited back to the lab
A.To test the study methods.
B.To provide high-level training.
C.To further confirm the study results.
D.To expand the groups of the subjects.
35. What might be the researchers’ attitude towards the technique’s wide use in sports
A.Cautious.
B.Concerned.
C.Positive.
D.Tolerant.

When I was chosen by my headteacher to present our class project at the annual school event on behalf of my class, I felt both honored and anxious. Speaking in front of such a large audience had always been my biggest fear. Although the project, which focused on reducing plastic waste on campus, meant a lot to all of us, I was still worried that my nervousness would ruin everything.
During the first practice session, I struggled to get through the speech. My voice shook, and I mispronounced several words. Worse still, I forgot some key points, which left me feeling both frustrated and embarrassed. Seeing my struggle, my best friend Lily volunteered to help. Every afternoon, she stayed with me after school, patiently listening to my rehearsals and giving suggestions. “Take it slow. You’re doing better each time,” she would say, encouraging me with her calm smile. Slowly, I began to feel more confident.
A week before the event, our headteacher organized a full rehearsal in the auditorium. Standing on the huge stage made my stomach flip, and I felt as if the bright lights were burning my face. Halfway through the speech, I completely lost track of my lines and froze in panic. My heart was pounding, and I thought I would never continue. Just then, I noticed my classmates in the front row, smiling and mouthing, “You can do it!” Their warm support helped me regain focus, and I managed to finish the rehearsal, even if it wasn’t perfect.
The night before the event, I lay in bed, filled with worries about everything that might go wrong. I imagined forgetting my lines, stumbling over words, or even tripping on the stage. The next morning, just before I stepped onto the stage, Lily quietly slipped a small note into my hand. It read simply, “We believe in you.” Her words made my heart race, but in a good way. I realized that I wasn’t alone — I had the support of my friends and classmates, and that gave me courage.

As I stepped onto the stage, a wave of nervousness washed over me.

As I stepped onto the stage, a wave of nervousness washed over me. I clutched Lily’s note tightly in my palm and glanced at my classmates sitting below. Their warm smiles calmed my beating heart instantly. I took a deep breath, stood straight and began my speech slowly. Whenever I felt nervous, I looked at my supportive classmates and Lily, which gave me constant strength. I smoothly covered all key points without any mistakes.
When I finished, the auditorium erupted with applause. I bowed deeply, full of joy and relief. After walking off the stage, Lily ran up to me and gave me a big hug. I finally overcame my fear of public speaking. This unforgettable experience taught me that encouragement from friends is powerful, and confidence comes from constant practice and the love of people around you.
