If you were walking in a forest and came to a crossroad like this, what would you do Why
How do you understand the poem lines in the opening page What does the word “roads” mean in the poem
Lead in
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
—Robert Frost
What emotion/feeling do you think the poet wanted to convey
Life choice is unavoidable, one cannot waste one’s life worrying about having not taken another path.
People should make the best decision based on what they know and then take that path wholeheartedly without looking back or wasting time regretting what life might have been.
What comes to your mind when you think of the word “poem” or “poetry”
Various themes, feelings/emotions, poetic devices, ...

The Road Not Taken
-By Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth,
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
都很少留下旅人的足迹;
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

UNIT 5 POEMS
Reading and Thinking
Appreciate different forms of English poems
Pre-reading
Compared with other forms of literature such as the novel, drama, and the short story, what are the characteristics of poetry
Why do you think people write poems
Compared to other forms of literature, poetry tends to be shorter though a poem can be very long. Words are used differently, not in sentences and paragraphs like in novels, but lines and stanzas (节;段). Often grammar and punctuation are ignored or used differently. Poetry is more emotional, and the possibilities are much more open than in prose.

Hush, little baby, don’t say a word,
Papa’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.
If that mockingbird won’t sing,
Papa’s gonna buy you a diamond ring.
If that diamond ring turns to brass,
Papa’s gonna buy you a looking glass.
If that looking-glass gets broke,
Papa’s gonna buy you a billy goat.
If that billy goat won’t pull,
Papa’s gonna buy you a cart and bull.
