That summer, I had my first selection test and later, the name list of the qualified candidates was posted on a noticeboard in the hallway. The other students ran to the wall and searched for their names on the list. Then, some screamed in excitement while some slicked away angrily.
Following the success of my audition, I was placed in the orchestra and I was in the middle of the violin section. However, I was too short to see the conductor as I was blocked by Gordon, an eleven-year-old boy in front of me. The conductor told him to switch seats with me.
In the orchestra, if you were seated in the front near the conductor, you had to be excellent. I understood the gravity of the seating arrangement. On hearing the conductor’s words, Gordon looked stricken. “Everyone will think she did better than me in the audition!” he burst. During the break, Gordon told me that we would both perform in front of the group. Whoever played it better would win. Returning to class, Gordon brought up his idea to the conductor at once. The conductor agreed and the challenge was scheduled for the following day.
After class, I told my father about the challenge. I waited for him to tell me that he would not let any boy pick on me. Instead, he grabbed a music stand and told me to start practising.
For fifteen minutes, my father kept barking orders. “Faster!” “Posture!” “Watch your rhythm!” Then, he said, “OK. Just play like that. May the best man win.” I gave my father a wink, feeling optimistic about the challenge.
Maybe I should have expected as much. When we played chess, my father always won. He said if he had eased up and let me win, that would be cheating. It was the first lesson I remembered from my father: Work hard and do not be afraid of losing. If you do lose, pick yourself up and you’ll succeed some day.
24. Why did some students slick away angrily
A. They were too short to be qualified. B. They did not pass the selection test.

C. A serious dialogue. D. A careful choice.
26. What can we infer about the seats in the orchestra
A. They are decided by the age of performers.
B. They actually depend on the height of performers.
C. They can be flexibly switched in different performances.
D. They are arranged according to the importance of performers.
27. What lesson did the author learn from his father
A. It’s never too old to learn. B. Great minds think the same.
C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Every cloud has a silver lining.

January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as OpenAl’s GPT-40, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other Als need lots of prepared examples, but Rl improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than OpenAI’s model, A simple version of Rl can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called Rl a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools. As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
28. What’s the advantage of DeepSeek-Rl compared with other top models
A. It can solve math problems. B. It can write code.
C. It can answer questions. D. It costs much less.
29. How does DeepSeek-Rl improve itself
A. It needs numerous annotated examples. B. It becomes better through practice.
C. It runs on high cost computers. D. It improves by working, with other models.
30. What is the most important for the DeepSeek-Rl’s success
A. Haying enough money. B. Using the latest computer chips.
C. Creativity and hard work. D. Copying other counties’ idea.
31. What is the main purpose of the article
A. To compare Chinese and American Al technologies.
B. To introduce a low-cost Al model from China.
C. To explain how computer chips work.
D. To encourage students to become programmers.

Based on a three-year-long study on millions of phones in ninety-eight countries, researchers found the global network of Android smartphones makes a useful earthquake early warning system, which can detect (探测) earthquakes and give users valuable seconds to act before the shaking starts.
Many countries have used traditional earthquake early warning systems with networks of earthquake sensors (感应器) to detect quakes and issue warnings across the affected area. Building such networks is expensive, and many areas where earthquakes are common do not have them. What they do have, however, are smartphones, which have built-in movement sensors. Using Android smartphones — which account for 70% of the global smartphone market — researchers developed the Android Earthquake Alert (AEA) system. “Although AEA is not always as timely as the traditional network detection, it can still detect small shaking during strong earthquakes,” says Allen, the leader of the study.
Working in the same way as traditional earthquake detection systems, the AEA system will transmit two types of alerts (警报) to the phone after detecting an earthquake. For earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher, the system sends “Take Action” alerts to users. These alerts are designed to draw users’ attention immediately and remind them to take protective actions. It also delivers “Be aware” alerts to areas expected to experience a shaking of magnitude 3 or 4.
To test how effective these alerts were, the researchers used search engines to collect voluntary answers. Results from around 15.5 million people showed that 87% of them did indeed experience shaking, with 36% receiving the alert before the ground began to move, 28% during and 23% after.
Now, the researchers are focused on improving the AEA system. “We think that we can continue to improve the quality of earthquake detection, and also improve on our strategies to deliver effective alerts.” says Allen. In the future, Allen and his teammates hope to use the same information to produce other disaster-reducing tools. Maps of ground shaking, for example, could help the emergency rescue after an earthquake.
32. What is AEA’s advantage over the traditional earthquake early warning system
A. It uses more advanced sensors.
B. It is cheaper and more widely accessible.
C. It can prevent earthquakes from happening.
D. It is more exact in detecting every small quake.
33. Which word can replace the underlined word “transmit” in paragraph 3
A. Send. B. Control. C. Train. D. Trust.
34. What is the current focus of the researchers
A. Stop AEA research and switch to new projects.
B. Sell the AEA system to smartphone companies.
C. Raise detection quality and improve alert delivery.
D. Replace all traditional detection systems with AEA.
35. Which could be a suitable title for the text
A. Worldwide Research on Smartphones
B. How to Protect Yourself in Earthquakes
C. The Disadvantages of Traditional Sensors
D. Android Phones: New Earthquake Early Warning System

It was an early winter morning. Joan was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already nine o’clock. Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe. Although Joan was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up. After all, she didn’t expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log, to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warmhearted greetings, “Good morning, my Dear!” Recognizing the voice from her father, Joan was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.
Joan’s father was a seaman, who rarely came back. Working on the sea was really hard. Born in a not-rich family, Joan and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere.
“Good morning, Dad, what’s up ” Joan said in an easy tone. “I have been very nice recently, my baby. Today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in one and half an hour. Do remember to take the cake.”
Hearing her father’s words, Joan felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum’s birthday! She took a glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the oily floor that hadn’t been mopped (拖地) for a few days—There was two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise for Mum.
Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement. “Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Mike up. We will give Mum a surprise!”
Joan hung up the phone with Dad, and hurriedly went to Mike’s room to share him her Big Cleaning plan. After listening to Joan, Mike readily accepted her idea.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It’s my honor to be here to deliver a speech. The topic is my dream job.
I want to be a medical worker. First of all, it is a job to treat patients. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, thousands of medical workers have devoted themselves to the well-being of humans, winning respect from society. Besides, even facing big challenges or threats to life, they never give up and keep fighting to the end, which fuels my passion for joining them. Such is the job that I have been dreaming of all the time.
From now on, I will stick to my dream and spare no efforts to make it come true. That’s all! Thank you for listening!
【答案】
The Big Cleaning plan began. Joan collected the clothes from sofa and then put them in the water of a basin. After pouring in some washing liquids, she began to wash them by hand. Realizing the clothes were clean enough, Joan gently squeezed water out and hung them to dry. Meanwhile, Mike was busy mopping the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what hard work his Mum had at home! They had just finished the cleaning when the express boy came to the door.
With the cake placed on the table, Mum came in. “Happy birthday, Mum!”, they greeted in chorus. Confused and surprised, Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart. Staring at the clean floor and the washed clothes, she could hardly contain her excitement and hugged them tightly, “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” Mum said emotionally. Just then Joan took out her smartphone and took a happy video named Mum’s Birthday and sent it to Dad.
