Lily was a 14-year-old student who loved painting. Last year, she joined a school art competition. She spent
two weeks working on her painting, hoping to win first prize. However, she only got a participation certificate (参
与证书). Lily felt so sad that she stopped painting for a month.
One day, her art teacher, Ms. Brown, noticed her dejection. She sat down with Lily and said, “Every artist
faces failures. The key is to learn from them, not give up.” Ms Brown showed Lily some of her old paintings—they
were not as good as Lily’s current work. Lily was surprised to see this.
Ms. Brown then encouraged Lily to join a community art show. At first, Lily was afraid to try again. But
with her teacher's support, she decided to give it a go. She improved her old painting by adding more colors and
details. This time, many visitors praised her work, and a local artist even asked her to join a youth art club.

It was a hot summer day. I came to Beijing for a running race. Halfway through the race, I started to feel
dizzy (眩晕的). Before I could finish the race, I fell down.
Some people said I had heatstroke (中暑 ). Later, I learned I had heat exhaustion (热衰竭 ). What’s the
difference
If we exercise too long in the heat, our bodies can lose too much water and get too hot, and we will
experience heat exhaustion. If so, our body temperature will increase. We will feel tired and want to drink water.
Often, we have a headache. If you get heat exhaustion, find a cool place right away. Drink enough water and rest. If
you don’t do these, heat exhaustion may turn into heatstroke.
Heatstroke is very dangerous. If someone has heatstroke, his body temperature will go up to 40℃ or even

In recent years, many modern cities suffer from heavy rain and floods. Streets turn into rivers, and cars are
often stuck in deep water. However, in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, there is a “magic” secret. Even during the rainy
season, the old city stays dry and safe. The hero behind this is not a modern machine, but an ancient underground
drainage system called “Fushougou” (Fortune and Longevity Ditches).
第 5页/共 11页
Located in the southeastern part of China. The city gets flooded easily during the early spring and summer.
To work out the problem. A smart official named Liu Yi designed this system. He didn’t try to fight against the
water. Instead, he learned to work with nature. He designed the ditches based on the shape of the land. Because the
northwest of the city is higher and the southeast is lower, the rainwater can flow naturally into the river.
The system has two main parts: the “Fu” ditch and the “Shou” ditch. They look like the Chinese characters
for “fortune” and “longevity”. The most amazing part is the “water window”. It acts like a door. When the river
outside is high, the water pressure pushes the window shut to stop the river water from coming back into the city.
When the river is low, the rainwater from the city pushes the window open and flows out. It works automatically!
Besides draining water, the system also connects with many ponds in the city. These ponds act like
“sponges”. When it rains heavily, they hold the extra water. When it is dry, the water in the ponds can be used for
daily life.
Thanks to the wonderful design, Ganzhou hasn’t flooded for over a thousand years. Today, Fushougou still
works well. Many people come to Ganzhou not only to see the beautiful natural wonders but also see the amazing
Fushou ditch. It teaches us that respecting nature is the best way to solve problems.
48.Why does the writer mention the floods in modern cities in Paragraph 1
A.To explain why cars get stuck in deep water.
B.To tell people not to live in cities with heavy rain.
C.To show that modern machines are not useful at all.
D.To introduce the topic by comparing modern problems with Ganzhou's success.
49.How did Liu Yi design the Fushougou system to deal with the rainwater
A.He used powerful pumps to push the water out.
B.He built high walls to fight against the river water.
C.He used the natural height difference of the land.
D.He dug deep holes to hide the water underground.
50.How does the “water window” work
A.It opens by itself when people need to walk through it.
B.It uses machines to pump the dirty water out of the city.
C.It stays open all the time to let the rainwater flow out quickly.
D.It closes when the river is high and opens when the river is low.
51.What can we learn from the Fushougou system according to the passage
第 6页/共 11页
A.We should build more ponds in every city.
B.Ancient people were smarter than modern people.
C.Working with nature is a wise way to solve problems.
D.Drainage systems are more important than tall buildings.

Have you ever travelled to another country and found that people use their hands or bodies in ways you
cannot understand Body language, a form of non-verbal (非言语的) communication, is very different in different
cultures. Understanding these differences can help us avoid misunderstandings.
For example, the common “thumbs-up” gesture, which means “good job” or “okay” in many Western
countries like the United States, is rude in some parts of the Middle East. Similarly, the “V for victory” sign is
positive in America, but if you make it with your palm facing inward in the UK or Australia, it becomes an insult
(侮辱).
Nodding your head usually means “yes”, and shaking it means “no”, right Not always! In Bulgaria and
Greece, people often nod to mean “no” and shake their heads to mean “yes”. This can be very confusing to visitors.
Another important aspect is personal space. In countries like Mexico and Saudi Arabia, people often stand
closer to each other during a conversation. However, in some European countries such as Germany and Sweden,
people prefer more personal space and feel uncomfortable if others stand too close.
Even something as simple as eye contact has different rules. In many Western cultures, looking someone in
the eye shows confidence and honesty. But in some Asian cultures, like South Korea and Japan, prolonged eye
contact can be seen as disrespectful or challenging, especially when talking to someone older or in a higher position
(地位).
In a word, body language is a powerful but silent language. What is polite in one culture might be impolite in
another. When we communicate with people from different backgrounds, knowing these non-verbal signs is as
important as learning their spoken language.
52.According to the text, where is the “thumbs-up” gesture rude
A.In the United States. B.In some Middle Eastern countries.
C.In Japan. D.In Germany.
53.If someone from Greece shakes their head while you are speaking, what are they most likely expressing
A.They are saying “yes”. B.They are feeling confused.
C.They are feeling happy. D.They are saying “no”.
第 7页/共 11页
54.Why does the writer mention personal space and eye contact in the text
A.To suggest that Western ways are better.
B.To argue that these are the most important parts of body language.
C.To show that all cultures have the same rules for these behaviours.
D.To give more examples of how non-verbal communication differs culturally.
55.What does the underlined word “prolonged” most likely mean
A.Very serious. B.Lasting for a short time.
C.Happening very often. D.Lasting for a long time.

In January 2025, serious wildfires broke out in Los Angeles, California.
The first fire was reported at 10:30 a. m. on January 7 in the hills near the Pacific Ocean. By noon, strong
winds spread the fire quickly. People started to leave their homes. Just after 6:00 p.m., the Eaton fire broke out in
other parts of the area. Over the next three days, six other fires broke out in the area. More than 150,000 people had

died, and 23 were missing. Schools were closed, roads were shut down and many homes lost power. As smoke
went across the country, officials set air quality warnings and asked people to wear masks.
The fires were so strong because of the dry weather and very strong winds. There was no rain for months, so

If someone has heatstroke, his body temperature will go up to 40℃ or even
higher. He won’t get better without treatment. People who get heatstroke will feel dizzy, breathe fast and even die.
During the summer, please be very careful when you’re out in the sun.

More than 150,000 people had
to leave for safe places and 87,000 received evacuation (疏散 ) warnings. Thousands of firefighters and workers
worked together to fight the fires and ensure the safety of people.

died, and 23 were missing. Schools were closed, roads were shut down and many homes lost power. As smoke

The fires were so strong because of the dry weather and very strong winds. There was no rain for months, so
