For some of us, going to the dentist for routine check-ups is a thing of the ordinary.
But for many people around the world, especially those in poverty-stricken areas, having
dental improvement and their teeth checked simply isn’t possible. A Brazilian dentist
named Felipe has devoted himself to helping change that situation.
Growing up in the USA, Felipe had just obtained the Bachelor of Medicine Degree
and was about to start a master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry (儿童口腔学 ) when a
journey to his father’s home changed his initial plan. “All locals didn’t have access to
dental care, and consequently, many of them suffered deformed teeth or even loss of teeth,
leading to many people not daring to laugh with mouth open,” Felipe recalled. “A desire
was planted in my heart. That is, to use my skills to bring healthy smiles to people
suffering from dental problems.”
With the support of his parents, Felipe formed an NGO called Porsorriso to give free
oral treatments to individuals with low incomes who require cleaning, fillings, restoration
work and more. His team is composed of approximately 30 registered volunteers who go
with him to poor towns and villages in Brazil.
Sponsorship is generally provided by two private companies. Individuals may also
make donations through the “Smile Solidarity” program, where they can choose monthly
amounts to contribute.
As noble as its objective is, Felipe admits that Porsorriso is “struggling to survive”
because of the huge cost of providing dental work and the constant fundraising events they
have to hold to keep the NGO in normal functioning. “Challenging as it is, it did bring
healthy teeth as well as renewed confidence to the locals. We will continue this act
whatever difficulties we will face,” Felipe said with a strong will.

In Portugal, near the town of Alqueva, lies Europe’s largest artificial lake, home to an
innovative floating solar-power plant developed by EDP, a leading renewable energy
company. Despite initial doubt about the high costs and potential issues of floating solar
technology, this project represents the sector’s maturation and readiness for expansion.
In this first phase of the project at Alqueva, engineers have stationed some 12,000 PV
modules (光伏组件) on floating platforms made from partially recycled plastic and locally
sourced soft wood. These are connected to an energy-storage system combining batteries
and are integrated with the hydroelectric dam’s power station.
Floating solar projects do face plenty of challenges. The kit has to be water-resistant,
which adds complexity and cost. The fish in lakes attract plenty of birds, whose droppings
can block the sun. To deal with this, engineers for the project at Alqueva have developed
remote-controlled cleaning robots and are working on autonomous ones.
Yet floating solar projects also enjoy several advantages. When located at existing
hydroelectric dams they do not require any additional land and can be connected to the grid
(电网) without the multi-year wait common for solar projects. The cooling effect of being
on water boosts the efficiency of the modules, with studies suggesting gains of between 5%
and 15% over land-based PV, while the shade they produce slows the water loss of the lake.
EDP views floating solar as a cornerstone of its renewable energy strategy. The initial
5 MW (兆瓦 ) capacity at Alqueva may seem modest, but it’s just the beginning. The
company is planning a second phase, which will see an additional 70 MW capacity.
According to Wood Mackenzie, a leading consultancy, floating solar technology could

comparison to the 1,600,000 MW of solar capacity as of last year. But every bit counts,”
he added.

In designing the robots of tomorrow, engineers have gained many of their inspirations
from the kingdom of creatures, with machines that mimic the way plants and animals
move and sense their environment.
In recent study, researchers at Cornell University have found that mycelia, the
underground parts of mushrooms, have the ability to sense chemical and biological signals
and respond to multiple inputs. By using the natural electrical signals of mycelia, the
researchers found a new way to control biohybrid (生物混合) robots, which can react to
their surroundings better than traditional man-made robots. With great efforts, two
biohybrid robots were built: a soft robot shaped like a spider and a wheeled robot. The
robots responded to mycelia’s signals by walking and rolling. They also changed their
position in response to light, demonstrating the mycelia’s ability to react to outer
influences.
However, finding a way to integrate mushrooms and robots requires more than just
gardening and technical skills. “You have to have a background in mechanical engineering,
electronics, some neurobiology (神经生物学), and even some kind of signal processing.
All these fields come together to build this kind of system,” said Shepherd, professor of
mechanical and aerospace engineering.
“Living systems respond to touch, light, heat and even some unknowns, like signals.
This is why we believe that if we want to build future robots, they must be able to work in
unexpected environments,” said Mishra, a research associate in the Organic Robotics Lab
of Cornell University. “By growing mycelia into the electronics of a robot, we were able to
allow the biohybrid machine to sense and respond to the environment. In this case we used

A few years ago, if you asked me about exercise, I would laugh. My gym routine
involved awkwardly using machines I didn’t understand, followed by quick escapes to
avoid breaking a sweat. I even convinced trainers to cut sessions short for coffee breaks!
Exercise felt like a burden until life threw an unexpected challenge my way.
Feeling stressed and needing a way to relax, I decided to give fitness another go.
Science says exercise releases “feel-good” chemicals, right But I knew I couldn’t do it
alone. I needed a friend or coach to push me. That’s how I met Adria, the owner of a local
training studio.
Adria didn’t accept excuses. If I skipped class, she’d text: “What’s your plan this
week ” Her insistence kept me committed. Over time, I noticed changes not just physically,
but in my confidence and mood. The gym turned from a place of fear to one of joy.
Then came a surprising turn. One day, exhausted from running her gym on her own,

wouldn’t pass, he reminded me of the hours I spent quizzing him with flashcards for his
medical exam. I was his biggest cheerleader on his way to becoming a doctor, and now
here he was quizzing me with flashcards, cheering me on and keeping me positive.
