I grew up hearing pieces of stories about my great-grandfather, an olive (橄榄) farmer in Sicily, who left for America in 1923 with nothing but a bag and a handful of soil. My grandmother spoke of him in soft Italian, and of an old olive tree that was said to have watched generations come and go. For years, these stories were just words — beautiful, but distant, like a book I’d read but never lived. Last summer, I boarded a plane to Sicily to find the tree and the roots (根) I’d only known in whispers.
My hands shook as I saw the tree in the distance: thick with branches spreading wide like open arms. I reached out and touched it. Large language models, or LLMs, are AI systems that power chatbots such as ChatGPT. Increasingly, people are turning to chatbots for quick answers instead of traditional web search tools like Google, Bing and Baidu. But a new study finds that people who use web searches to look up information gain deeper knowledge than those who depend on AI chatbots.
Melumad, who works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, teamed up with Pennsylvanian neuroscientist Jin Hoyun to compare what people learned through LLMs against regular web searches. Some search engines now give an AI-generated answer along with a list of websites. But a regular web search just gives a list of websites that have information related to what people search for.
Across seven experiments, the researchers randomized (随机分配) more than 10,000 participants (参与者) to learn about different topics with either Google or ChatGPT. Afterward, the participants summarized what they’d learned and wrote it out as advice for a friend. The researchers then gauged whether the learned knowledge was “shallow” or “deep” based on what the participants reported. Across all the experiments, one pattern held: Knowledge gained from chatbot summaries was shallower than that obtained only from web links (链接).
When people use web searches, they analyse and summarize information. That means they figure out how information from different sources fits together. “LLMs can reduce the load of having to process information for oneself,” Melumad concluded. “But this comfort comes at the cost of developing deeper knowledge on a topic.” However, she noted, developers could design AI-using search tools that encourage users to dig deeper.
People could follow the links given by ChatGPT or fact-check the information ChatGPT gives. These actions would bring users much the same benefits as web searching does. So Oppenheimer, a professor at Carnagie Mellon University, doesn’t think people need to give up LLMs. “The effectiveness of the tool depends on how you use it,” he said.

The idea of sending humans to Mars has attracted growing attention in recent years. Some scientists and private companies even hope to build a human settlement there one day. To many people, Mars represents adventure, discovery, and the possibility of a second home for humankind. Yet behind this exciting dream lies a serious question: Is moving to Mars really the right choice
One concern is that humans may change Mars before we truly understand it. If people land there, they will certainly carry countless microbes (微生物) from Earth. These tiny forms of life could spread across the Martian surface, making it difficult for scientists to tell whether any life on Mars is truly native. Even worse, if simple Martian life does exist, human arrival might destroy it before it is fully discovered. In that sense, going to Mars too soon could damage one of the very goals of exploration.
There is also the question of whether humans are even the best explorers for such a task. Robots have already achieved remarkable results on Mars, discovering signs of water and materials related to pared with humans, they are far cheaper and do not need air, food, or water to survive. They are not troubled by loneliness, boredom, or dangerous radiation (辐射), either. As artificial intelligence continues to develop, robotic missions may become even more effective in places that are too risky for people.
At the same time, Earth itself still demands our full attention. Climate change, energy problems, and other global challenges remain far from being solved. Building a human settlement on Mars would cost a large amount of money, while life there would still be extremely difficult because of thin air, weak gravity, and high radiation. For these reasons, improving life on Earth is clearly a more pressing and reasonable choice than attempting to escape to Mars.
Mars is certainly worth exploring, but for now, human settlement may be a step we are not ready to take.
