“Non-player character” (NPC), originally a term from video games, now widely refers to live performers who interact with tourists as specific characters in China’s scenic spots. Since the beginning of this year, NPCs have become a “standard feature” in many places. During the May Day holiday, NPCs were among the most eye-catching highlights, with many travelers making special trips just to see them.
However, recent reports have pointed out “borderline” behaviors by NPCs in some scenic areas. What kind of attention should scenic spots be pursuing
Zhang Tong believes that NPCs are designed as a key part of immersive cultural tourism. Through role playing, they turn cultural content into real experiences. However, some scenic spots use NPCs as ostentatious tools to catch visitors’ eyes, creating poor or even vulgar content. Such tricks may seem “entertaining” on the surface, but they are actually harming the industry’s image, especially with many teenagers visiting these spots.
In contrast, what is happening at Hetou Old Street in Tangshan deserves attention. The popular NPC “Li Bai” uses no exaggerated physical interactions. Instead, he engages in improvised conversations with visitors centered on classical poetry. Drawing on solid cultural knowledge, he weaves poetic sentiments into modern life. When visitors talk about work stress, he offers comfort using the wisdom of ancient scholars.
“Borderline” content may lower the cost of going viral, but its popularity will quickly fade. The culture-driven approach takes longer to bear fruit, but it will keep growing in value over time.
4. What can we learn about NPCs from paragraph 1
A.They have gained great popularity.
B.They are limited to video games.
C.They merely appear during holidays.
D.They are professional stage actors.
5. What does the underlined word “ostentatious” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Time-saving. B.Cost-cutting. C.Risk-seeking. D.Attention-grabbing.
6. How is the NPC “Li Bai” different from many others
A.He focuses only on young visitors.
B.He performs in a very dramatic way.
C.He focuses on the depth of his role.
D.He seeks a quick way to become famous.
7. Which is the best title for the text
A.NPCs: A Popular Term from Games
B.NPCs: Seeking Attention or Culture
C.NPCs: A New Attraction for Tourists
D.NPCs: Gaining Popularity or Knowledge

Around 90% of people prefer using their right hand, a level of dominance unseen in any other primate species. Why humans became so strongly right-handed has long remained unclear.
Now, a new study led by the University of Oxford points to two key evolutionary changes: walking upright and the growth of the human brain. The team analyzed data from over 2,000 monkeys and apes. They examined factors including brain size, body size, and movement patterns.
Humans initially stood apart from every other primate in the analysis. However, that changed when researchers added two features: brain size and the ratio between arm and leg length, a marker of upright walking. The findings suggest that the combination of upright walking and larger brains may explain humans’ strong right-hand preference. The study also allowed researchers to estimate handedness in extinct human ancestors. Early hominins showed only mild right-hand preferences, similar to modern great apes. That pattern became stronger with later species, including Neanderthals.
One species stood out: Homo floresiensis, a small-bodied species nicknamed the “hobbit.” It had a much weaker right-hand bias, with a relatively small brain and abilities for both climbing and upright walking. The researchers believe this points to a two-stage process. First, walking upright freed the hands from moving, creating pressure for more specialized hand use. Later, as human brains grew larger, the right-hand preference became much stronger. Dr. Thomas A. Püschel, a lead researcher, said, “Our results suggest it is probably tied to some of the key features that make us human, especially walking upright and the evolution of larger brains.” The study also raises new questions, such as why left-handedness has persisted throughout human evolution.
8. What is the main finding of the new study
A.Larger brains alone explain right-hand use.
B.Walking upright shapes hand preference alone.
C.Tool use is the key to human right-handedness.
D.Brain growth and upright walking work together.
9. What can we know about the right-hand preference in paragraph 3
A.It is the marker of upright walking.
B.It becomes stronger in human species.
C.It is the unique skill owned by humans.
D.It changes the habits of modern great apes.
10. Why did the “hobbit” species have a weaker right-hand bias
A.It had a smaller brain than other apes.
B.It used its hands only for climbing.
C.It had a small brain and climbed often.
D.It walked upright better than others.
11. What is Dr. Püschel’s attitude towards the study
A.Cautious. B.Confident. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.

At seventy-two, Amelia never imagined she would be raising her eight-month-old granddaughter, Lily, alone. Her daughter and son-in-law were working overseas temporarily, and Amelia had volunteered to help.
One cold Tuesday before Thanksgiving, Amelia realized they were completely out of baby food, so she put Lily into her carrier, wrapped her coat around them both, and went to the grocery store.
Inside, holiday music played, and people filled their carts with holiday supplies. As Amelia passed the fruit section, the sweet scent of crisp red apples caught her attention. She hesitated, remembering how she used to bake apple pies for the family, but she quickly shook her head — today, it was just Lily and her, and there was no need to bake for just the two of them.
At the checkout, she tried to smile. She slid her card into the machine and waited. “Beep. Card Declined.” Amelia’s heart sank. “Could you try it again ” she asked softly, her hands already starting to shake. The screen blinked back the same cold message.
Lily began to cry, her small voice rising in a way that made everything feel worse, and Amelia held her gently, whispering, “It’s okay, sweetheart, Grandma will figure it out,” even though she wasn’t sure how.
“Wait,” a voice cut through the tension. A man behind her stepped forward, his eyes holding a quiet understanding. Before Amelia could protest, he had already paid. The machine beeped once more, but this time it said “Approved.” He handed her the bags with a gentle nod and turned to leave.

Outside the store, Amelia caught up with the kind man. She asked for his name, Michael, and tried to hand him cash to pay him back. Michael refused warmly, saying he understood her difficulty as he once had similar troubles. He told her to pass the kindness on instead of repaying him. Amelia expressed sincere thanks again, holding Lily tightly as she watched him walk away. On the way home, she kept thinking about his generosity and decided to bake an apple pie to thank him properly.
A few days later, Amelia made her way to Michael’s house, with Lily and a warm apple pie. Michael was surprised to see them. The sweet smell of the pie filled the room quickly. They chatted happily, and Amelia shared how much his help meant to her and little Lily. Michael was moved by her gratitude. Before leaving, Amelia promised she would always help people in trouble just like him. This unexpected kindness built a warm friendship between the two families.
