A
A broad smile lights up Ndlovu’s face as he recounts the story of an elephant that had wandered less than a metre from his tent the previous night in search of food.
The Forest Reserve is also home to the Panda Masuie Release Site, a unique project that “rewilds” orphaned elephants that have been rescued and rehabilitated. Here, the rescued elephants regularly interact with over 260 wild elephants. Keeping the landscape free of poachers (偷猎者) is critical to their success.
Inspecting the vast area is hard work: fourteen forest rangers (护林员) are stationed across four remote bases for two weeks at a time, far from their families and without facilities such as running water or electricity. Poorly equipped rangers, who sometimes sleep under the trees at night—in the mud during the rainy season and in the dust during the cold, dry winter—needed more support.
Some agencies regularly supply food, fuel, equipment, and training to ensure the forest and its wildlife are protected from poachers as well as illegal businessmen. “The assistance we are getting makes us more effective in our work to protect animals, especially with modern equipment,” said Senior Anti-Poaching Ranger Femberai Mutsvangwa.
For instance, proof of the improved management effectiveness comes from recordings by trail cameras. Triggered by animal movement and placed at strategic points in Panda Masuie, the cameras are capturing increased numbers of elephants, wild dogs, and other species. Another example is the supply of SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) technology, which enables rangers to keep records of sightings, evidence of poachers, and any species of interest, animal or plant, on their cellphones. This information is remotely downloaded by managers, eliminating (消除) the need for rangers to use valuable fuel and time travelling to regional head offices.
The project aims to improve the long-term survival prospects of threatened elephants by building a protection zone of stability, harmony, and sustainable development.

Loud traffic doesn’t stop big animals like moose and bears from crossing highways—nor does it keep smaller creatures from being run over by car tyres. In just two years along one stretch of highway in Utah, a total of 106 big animals were killed in car collisions (碰撞). People are also hurt—about 200 die every year in the more than one million car collisions in the US.
And the number of these deadly accidents is growing. “Over the most recently reported 15-year period, wildlife-vehicle collisions have increased by 50 percent, with an estimated one to two million large animals killed by motorists every year,” says Rob Ament, the road ecology programme manager from the Western Transportation Institute (WTI).
There’s one solution, however, which’s been remarkably effective around the world in decreasing collisions between cars and animals crossing the road: wildlife underpasses and overpasses. Studies that looked at a cross-section of native species’ deaths on highways in Florida, Australia, and Mexico all show that wildlife crossings save lives, both humans’ and animals’. “You can get reductions of 85 to 95 percent with crossings that guide animals under or over highways,” Ament says.
That’s why these traffic-spanning bridges and tunnels—which have been popular in Europe since the 1950s when the first was built in France—are showing up worldwide. Usually looking much like a regular overpass for cars, but decorated with native plants, they aren’t particularly noticeable unless you know what you’re looking for.
And under crossings, which pass beneath highways to assist smaller animals, may be invisible to drivers. But they’re helping countless species, from gold monkeys and pumas in Brazil to water voles (水鼠) in London. Ament is even working on wildlife crossings for highways that haven’t been built yet in developing nations like Bhutan, which need safe places for Asian elephants to cross their territories. As he points out, it’s a lot easier—and cheaper—to build them during road construction than it is to retrofit (翻新), as has been done in the US and Canada.
( )5.What are the figures in Paragraph 1 meant to indicate
A.The causes of traffic accidents.
B.The frequency of car-animal collisions.
C.The richness of animal diversity.
D.The consequences of loud traffic.
( )6.How does Ament feel about the role of wildlife crossings
A.Satisfied. B.Doubtful.
C.Anxious. D.Disappointed.
( )7.What can be learned about the wildlife overpasses in Europe
A.They look pretty and modern.
B.They are very complex in structure.
C.They are too small for vehicles.
D.They fit in well with their surroundings.
( )8.What’s a disadvantage of wildlife crossings in the US according to Ament
A.They are not safe enough for animals.
B.They were not well planned in advance.
C.They have not been properly maintained.
D.They have impacted road traffic negatively.

根据下文“Here, the rescued elephants regularly interact with over 260 wild elephants.”(在这里,被救助的大象经常与 260 多只野生大象进行互动。)可知,文中提到的orphaned elephants that have been rescued and rehabilitated的意思是这些孤儿大象被拯救并恢复了健康,因此rehabilitated的意思是“恢复健康”。
根据文章第三段“Inspecting the vast area is hard work…far from their families and without facilities such as running water or electricity. Poorly equipped rangers, who sometimes sleep under the trees at night—in the mud during the rainy season and in the dust during the cold, dry winter—needed more support.” 故选A。
根据文章第四段“The assistance we are getting makes us more effective in our work to protect animals, especially with modern equipment…”(我们得到的援助使我们保护动物的工作更加有效,特别是有了现代设备之后……)和文章第五段“For instance, proof of the improved management effectiveness comes from recordings by trail cameras.”(例如,跟踪摄像机的记录证明了管理效率的提高。)以及“Another example is the supply of SMART…enables rangers to keep records of sightings, evidence of poachers, and any species of interest, animal or plant, on their cellphones.”

根据第一段中“In just two years along one stretch of highway in Utah, a total of 106 big animals were killed in car collisions (碰撞). People are also hurt—about 200 die every year in the more than one million car collisions in the US.”
根据第三段“You can get reductions of 85 to 95 percent with crossings that guide animals under or over highways…” 故选A项。
根据第四段中“Usually looking much like a regular overpass for cars, but decorated with native plants, they aren’t particularly noticeable unless you know what you’re looking for.”
