After a terrible accident left college student Vhan McGuire paralyzed (瘫痪), a team of engineering students stepped in with an incredible solution — building a custom all-terrain (全地形) wheelchair that’s giving him the freedom to explore the outdoors again.
McGuire, an architecture student, had always loved hiking, camping, and spending time in nature. But a motorcycle accident in October 2024 changed everything, limiting where he could go and what he could do.
“A regular wheelchair struggles on any surface that isn’t hard or flat,” McGuire said. The limitation had long been a source of frustration in his daily life. Then, a chance introduction changed everything.
A friend connected him with a group of engineering students at Tennessee Tech University who were searching for a meaningful, real-world challenge. That’s when Braden Hopper, John Avery, and Luke White decided to take on something special. Together, they built a custom all-terrain wheelchair they call “The Chariot”.
The result is nothing short of incredible — a rugged, powerful chair designed to handle outdoor terrain and bring back the freedom McGuire thought he had lost.
Now, instead of watching life from the sidelines, McGuire’s back outside doing what he loves. “Now, having a piece of equipment that can go anywhere — and that I feel comfortable with is a wonderful thing,” McGuire said. “This gets me back to what I loved doing and how I loved living before my accident.”
Perhaps he summed it up best with just a few powerful words, “It gives me back my legs.” What began as a class project became a life-changing gift — proving that a little creativity and compassion (怜悯) can go a long way in helping someone regain their world.

For many children, getting their first pair of glasses is a positive event because they can see clearly again. But what if a pair of glasses could not only help with the symptoms (症状) of myopia (nearsightedness) , but also slow its progression
According to AP News, these are exactly what the newly-approved glasses by Essilor Stellest do. When used by children from the ages of 6 to 12, they can slow the progression of myopia by 70 percent in two years.
The rate of myopia around the world is rising, possibly due to increased time inside looking at screens. In the US, 30 to 40 percent of children and young adults will have developed myopia by the time they finish high school.
According to CNN, myopia develops when the eye grows too long, and this causes the image that is projected on the retina (视网膜) to be poorly focused when the eyes are looking at something in the distance. It typically speeds up during childhood, when the eyes and retina are still growing, and then levels off in adulthood.
The lenses (透镜) of the glasses have a clear middle, but that center is surrounded by rings of tiny raised dots. These dots defocus peripheral (外围的) light, which is thought to slow the progression of myopia by slowing the growth of the eyes.
Though tests have shown that this method is efficacious at slowing the progression of myopia in children, it is not clear why defocusing peripheral light slows eye growth. It is also still unknown what the exact visual images that are processed by the retina to slow growth are.
Slowing the rate of myopia development in children is not only important because it will allow them to see better as adults, it is also important because myopia can cause changes to the retina that can lead to other symptoms, such as a higher risk for glaucoma, myopic maculopathy, and retinal detachment. All of these can eventually lead to vision loss.

The research, conducted by a team of scientists at Queen Mary University of London, employed machine learning (ML) techniques to analyse the lyrics (歌词) and audio features of individuals’ favorite songs, revealing a complex connection between music and morality.
“Our study provides powerful evidence that music preferences can serve as a window into an individual’s moral values,” stated Dr Charalampos Saitis, one of the senior authors of the study.
The study involved an existing dataset of over 1,400 participants who completed questionnaires assessing their moral values and provided information about their favorite artists through the Internet. The researchers then took acoustic and lyrical features from the top five songs of each participant’s preferred artists.
Using ML algorithms, the team analysed the features to predict participants’ moral values. Various text processing techniques, including lexicon-based methods, were employed to analyze narrative, moral values, feelings, and emotions in lyrics. Additionally, low-and high-level audio features provided via Spotify’s API were used to understand information in participants’ musical choices, enhancing moral inferences.
The results showed that a combination of lyrical and audio features outperformed basic information in predicting individuals’ moral values. Specifically, musical elements like pitch (音高) and timbre appeared as key predictors for values of care and fairness, while feelings and emotions expressed in lyrics were more effective in predicting qualities of loyalty, authority, and purity.
“Our findings reveal that music is not only a source of entertainment; it is also a powerful medium that reflects and shapes our moral sensibilities,” remarked Vjosa Preniqi, lead author of the study. “By understanding this connection, we can open up new methods for music-based interventions (干预) that promote positive moral development.”
The study’s implications go beyond academic curiosity, holding the potential to impact how we use music in diverse aspects of life. “Our breakthrough can create new possibilities across multiple fields — from personalised music experiences to innovative music therapy (治疗) and communication campaigns,” commented Dr Kyriaki Kalimeri, senior co-author of the study.
