Li Jiaying grew up in Hong Kong and dreamed of space from an early age. When she was young, she watched the news of China’s first astronaut Yang Liwei, and a remark he recalled moved her deeply — The higher our spacecraft flies, the higher we Chinese can hold our heads up. That moment planted a seed in her heart.
At school, Li discovered her passion for computer science and eventually earned a doctoral degree from the University of Hong Kong. Though offered high-paying jobs, she joined the Hong Kong Police Force, working in network security as a superintendent (警司).
In 2022, China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) selected astronauts from Hong Kong for the first time. Li joined in the fierce competition and stood out from 120 applicants through strict health, skill, and mental tests, becoming the only payload specialist (载荷专家).
After joining the team in 2024, she took part in tough training — over 200 tasks in 8 areas, 1, 700 hours. She quickly learned Mandarin and adapted. On May 24, 2026, aboard Shenzhou-23, she became Hong Kong’s first astronaut and China’s fourth female space traveler, lighting hope for youth. Chess is a game enjoyed by millions of people all over the world. Every day, over 30 million matches are played on , which also gives tips to help players get better. In total, more than 600 million adults around the globe play this classic board game.
Historically, the Soviet Union (苏联) dominated top-level chess, especially between 1970 and 1990, but today the landscape has changed globally. Currently, the world champion is from India, and the highest-rated player is from Norway. Additionally, China has emerged as a dominant force by winning both men’s and women’s team championships at the Chess Olympiad, a team competition organized by the World Chess Federation, while six of the world’s top 20 players are American.
In chess, you win when you checkmate your opponent (对手). Top players hardly ever get checkmated, because they can predict losses far in advance and choose to resign early. Players get rating points based on their performance in official games. Average players have around 1300-1500 points, players over 2200 are called masters, and top grand-masters usually have over 2500 points.
Chess first became a global mainstream hit back in 1972, when American star Bobby Fischer beat a Soviet player at the height of the Cold War. Between 2020 and 2022, the number of active users doubled.
There are also fun facts about chess: one old attacking set is named after a small Scottish island. The chess queen, now the most powerful piece, only gained this great ability in the Middle Ages. Also, the word for “knight” (国际象棋中的马) and other chess pieces have different funny names across different world languages.

For children worldwide, hearing loss is a lifelong barrier that influences their study, communication and social development. Among various types of deafness, rare genetic deafness is one of the most troublesome conditions. Caused by gene mutations (基因突变) before birth, this kind of hearing problem usually appears in early childhood. Traditional treatment methods like hearing aids can only offer limited help. For a long time, doctors and researchers have been struggling to find an effective cure for this deafness.
Fortunately, a new medical therapy (疗法) has brought unexpected hope to these sick children. In a series of initial clinical trials carried out by an international medical research team, the therapy achieved extremely impressive results. Nine out of ten children who received the professional treatment regained basic hearing ability.
The newly-developed therapy targets the root cause of genetic deafness instead of simply relieving symptoms. Different from traditional equipment that only makes external sounds louder, it works by repairing the damaged auditory (听觉的) cells. For young children, whose auditory systems are still developing, this repair treatment is especially effective. Doctors explained that early intervention is the key to success, because young brains are more adaptable and can rebuild hearing-related nerve connections quickly.
Although the initial trial results are highly encouraging, researchers remind the public that the therapy is still in the experimental stage. The present trials only cover a small group of children within a limited age range. More large-scale and long-term tests are needed to check the safety and stability of the therapy. Besides, scientists will continue to improve the treatment process to reduce costs, so that more families in need can afford it in the future.
12. What do we know about rare genetic deafness
A.It usually appears at birth.
B.It usually worsens in adulthood.
C.It can be cured through some hearing aids.
D.It results from genetic mutations before birth.
13. What is the advantage of the new therapy
A.It repairs damaged auditory cells.
B.It is cheaper than old treatments.
C.It is used widely in hospitals now.
D.It works for patients of all age groups.
14. Why is early intervention important for children
A.They can suffer less.
B.The cost will be lower.
C.Side effects will be fewer.
D.The recovery will be quicker.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the new therapy
A.Unclear. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Negative.

The azalea (杜鹃花) beside my house in Morehead City, North Carolina, grew extremely fast. Without regular trimming (修剪), it would soon spread across the entire yard. Every spring, I would trim its wild branches, always viewing the overgrown azalea as a small annoyance.
This spring, I picked up my tools, preparing to trim the azalea as usual. I had already cut half the azalea and stood on a ladder, reaching for the top branches, when a thrasher (画眉鸟) suddenly flew out of the thick leaves and flew quickly to the backyard. I had noticed the bird and its partner hanging around my yard for weeks.
Out of curiosity, I pushed aside the dense leaves and spotted a hidden nest. Resting inside were three tiny, soft baby birds, looking extremely delicate. My heart melted the moment I caught sight of these little cute creatures. I soon figured out the birds’ intention. In my well-organized neighborhood, the wild azalea was a rare safe shelter. Its thick branches could protect the babies from natural enemies. The parent thrashers could fly out to hunt insects and berries and return quickly to feed their young. Regrettably, my previous movement had already frightened one parent bird away.
Suddenly, I realized I faced a difficult choice. If I continued my cutting, the exposed nest would put the helpless little birds in deadly danger. But if I gave it up, the wildly spreading azalea would ruin the yard’s tidiness.

After struggling for a while, I finally made a choice. I put down my trimming tools and decided to leave the azalea untouched. To keep the yard neat, I only cut branches far away from the nest. I also placed some dry grass around the bush to make the nest safer. Every day I quietly watched from a distance, never disturbing the parent birds when they came back to feed their babies.
Seeing the baby birds growing stronger in the shelter, I smiled. Several weeks later, the little thrashers learned to fly and left the nest with their parents. Though the azalea looked a little wild, it brought me a special warm memory. I realized small kindness to wildlife can bring great joy. From then on, I never rushed to trim bushes in spring, for they may be warm homes for tiny lives.
