Preet Chandi, a British explorer, is now setting her sights on Arctic exploration after making history by hiking on her own to the South Pole. Also referred to as Polar Preet, the 36-year-old has made three independent expeditions (探险) to Antarctica, earning herself four Guinness World Records.
Chandi reached the South Pole for the first time in January 2022, becoming the first woman of color to complete an independent expedition to Antarctica. A year later, she broke the record for the longest unsupported one-way polar ski journey, skiing for up to 15 hours a day while pulling her supplies through winds of up to 60 mph. She covered 922 miles over 70 days, beating the previous world record. Now, Chandi is in training to become the first woman to travel independently and unsupportedly to the North Pole.
The physiotherapist served as a medical officer in the British army for 16 years. Her taste for endurance (耐力) challenges came after she undertook a marathon. After completing a 50-mile challenge, she caught the bug for adventure and began seeking out bigger challenges. During her service in South Sudan, she organized a 30-hour endurance event. She completed the full 30 hours.
“I was told no on so many occasions, considered stubborn (固执的) because I wanted to do things that were out of the norm,” Chandi said. “When I reached the South Pole for the first time, I said: ‘I don’t want to just break the glass ceiling — that invisible (看不见的) wall preventing women from reaching the top. I want to break it into a million pieces.’ I want to encourage others to push their limits. It is amazing how much your world opens up when you start to do so.”
“Anything big can feel out of reach at the beginning,” she added. “If a Punjabi girl from Derby can get to Antarctica, you can go and achieve anything.”

The City of Chicago has been selected as the official host city for UNESCO’s International Jazz Day 2026, the world’s largest celebration of jazz and its power to unite communities across the globe. The announcement, made by UNESCO and the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, sets the stage for a historic celebration on April 30, 2026, stressing Chicago’s contributions to jazz, blues, and global music culture.
Since its launch in 2012, International Jazz Day has traveled across the globe — from Paris to Havana, Sydney to St. Petersburg — bringing people together through music. Chicago’s selection happens at the same time as the 100th birthday of jazz legend Miles Davis, a figure deeply connected to the city’s musical heritage.
“Chicago is the birthplace of modern jazz innovation,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “From the clubs of Bronzeville to the airwaves carrying our sound across the nation, jazz has always been the reflection of our resilience (适应力). Hosting International Jazz Day 2026 honors the soul of our city.”
The event is led by the Chicago Jazz Alliance, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. It is supported by many cultural and educational organizations, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association and the Jazz Institute of Chicago. These partners work to ensure the celebration remains rooted in authenticity (真实性) and community.
The celebration will end with an All-Star Global Concert, led by Chicago native and jazz icon Herbie Hancock, and broadcast in 190 countries. In the days leading up to the concert, a week of educational programs, community outreach, and youth involvement will take place citywide, bringing the healing (治愈) and unifying force of jazz directly into neighborhoods and schools. Students will be invited to participate in the festival through performances, master classes and workshops.
International Jazz Day 2026 will restate Chicago’s essential role in the global evolution of jazz and its position as a forward-thinking cultural center.
8. What makes Chicago the host for International Jazz Day 2026
A.Its large number of musical clubs.
B.Its success in hosting global concerts.
C.Its close connection with jazz musicians.
D.Its great contributions to jazz development.

In now-famous remarks marking the first-ever World Soil Day, Maria-Helena Semedo, an official from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, said it takes 1,000 years to form just three centimeters of topsoil — the nutrient-rich surface layer that plants need to grow. Given the current rate of soil degradation (退化), Semedo warned that 100% of the world’s topsoil could disappear in just 60 years.
Scientists warn that the long-term loss of farmable soil could have a disastrous impact on agricultural production. “We rely entirely on agriculture to survive,” says ecologist Steven D. Allison. “And agriculture cannot exist without healthy soil.”
The biggest threat to soil is industrial farming. The heart of large-scale food production is mono-cropping, the practice of growing a single crop repeatedly on the same land. While it can increase short-term output, it can be harmful because it hurts soil in the long term by destroying nutrients, reducing its ability to hold water, and lowering its defense capability to harmful insects and diseases. As a result, farmers have to use more fertilizers and insect killers, which further destroy the microorganisms in the soil. Worse still, mono-cropping is often paired with tillage (翻耕). This practice breaks down colonies of bacteria and fungi — tiny organisms that work hard to produce nutrients for plants.
The good news is that soil degradation is absolutely solvable, according to Allison. “We have long-proven methods to improve soil quality,” he notes. These methods are generally called regenerative (再生的) agriculture. By growing diverse crops, this approach builds up healthy soil ecosystems. It not only protects topsoil but also helps restore and rebuild it.
Consumers can drive changes to the food system from the bottom up by choosing to buy produce from farmers who practice regenerative agriculture. “Everyone has a role to play,” Allison says. “We all need to open our eyes and learn more about the soil beneath our feet.”
12. What does paragraph 1 say about the topsoil
A.Its formation is time-consuming.
B.It can be easily influenced by weather.
C.Its nutrients are mainly from farm crops.
D.It can be renewed quickly after being damaged.
13. Why is mono-cropping harmful
A.It reduces short-term output.
B.It makes the soil hold too much water.
C.It destroys the soil ecosystem.
D.It increases farmers’ economic pressure.
14. What does Allison advise consumers to do
A.Maintain their daily consumption habits.
B.Turn to local farmers for daily necessities.
C.Keep a close watch on global soil degradation.
D.Support farmers using regenerative agricultural methods.
15. What is the best title for the text
A.Learn More About the Topsoil
B.Industrial Farming: A Risk to Earth
C.Save Our Soil Through Better Farming
D.Regenerative Agriculture: A New Science

There is a secret art to ending a conversation gracefully. Most people focus on making great first impressions, but what about great last impressions ____16____ Just as first impressions shape how people see you in the opening moments, how you exit a conversation shapes the lasting memory they take away. Many people ignore closing manners unconsciously (无意识地), unaware of their huge influence on personal relationships.
____17____ A good conversation can become awkward when it slowly dies out. You know it’s time to leave when you feel bored, the other person looks bored, or someone interrupts. But if you want to do it like a master, timing is everything. Instead of waiting for the awkward moment, try to end a little after the conversation hits its best point. It’s hard to stop the fun, but ending on a high note keeps the good feelings. It also helps you avoid an awkward goodbye.
Now, here’s how to do it. The clearest way to exit is to name the exit. Signal clearly what is happening. Say things like “I don’t want to keep you” or “I’ll let you get back to it”. ____18____ Another useful skill is to end with a future hope. Try a line like “Let’s talk about this again sometime”. It shows that the conversation meant something. ____19____ Small polite lines like these help build long-term friendly connections.
Knowing how to end a conversation is an important skill. Everyone should learn it. Your conversation ending is your last chance to change the overall feeling. It can build a better connection. It can keep positive feelings alive. But in the most awkward moments, it can also ruin your chance of leaving a good impression. ____20____
A.First impressions stick.
B.So choose your exit wisely.
C.Actually, they matter just as much.
D.It is indeed an undervalued social skill.
E.This way, neither person feels left behind.
F.So when is the right time to end a conversation
G.And it increases the chance of a follow-up later.

Working in a school canteen (餐厅), I see what kids eat and, more importantly, what they don’t eat. Among the lively students, there was an eighth-grader called Leo — a quiet boy who always wore the same old, oversized grey clothes. While other children rushed for lunch, Leo would sit alone in a corner, holding a worn plastic lunchbox as if it held something precious.
For two weeks in a row, I noticed the same sight. Leo would sit down, slowly open his lunchbox, take a quick look inside, and then close it at once. When his friends came closer to see what he had, he would give a small smile and say softly, “I’m not very hungry today. I had a big breakfast.” But from where I stood behind the counter, I could clearly hear his stomach growl (咕咕叫) above the noise of the room. The truth was sad: his lunchbox was empty.
My heart ached for him, but I didn’t step in at once. I knew that at his age, children could easily laugh at others, and I didn’t want him to feel awkward. I needed a way to help him without hurting him.
The next day, I came up with a “plan”. At the busiest time of lunch, I walked out of the kitchen with some freshly-made cheese sandwiches. Passing by Leo’s table, I spoke loudly, “Oh no! I made too many sandwiches today. If no one helps me eat them, I’ll have to throw them away. What a pity!”
Leo’s eyes suddenly lit up. He raised his hand slowly. I walked over and gave him two sandwiches, an apple, and a box of chocolate milk. “You’re doing me a huge favor, Leo,” I said to him.
For the next few days, the same thing happened again and again-I kept “making” too much food and putting it on his tray. Every time I handed him the food, Leo would look at me with eyes full of deep gratitude (感激).

From then on, Leo became my most “helpful” student. Every noon he would wait quietly by the counter, ready to “help” me clear extra food. Gradually we chatted more. He told me his family was poor and he could hardly afford lunch. I never told others his secret and always prepared enough food for him. He also started to help me clean tables after lunch to repay my kindness.
At the end of that school year, I received a letter from Leo. In the letter, he thanked me for my silent help and respect, which saved his pride. He said he would study hard and help people in need like me in the future. That letter made me realize small warm acts can bring great light to a person’s whole life.
