Museum volunteer programs offer high school students an opportunity to engage with history, science, and the local community. For teenagers seeking meaningful summer experiences, two outstanding institutional programs are currently accepting applications.
Field Museum Teen Volunteer Program
Designed specifically for current high school students, teen volunteers bring the museum to life for visitors of all ages. Teens must commit to volunteering at least 10 days throughout the entire summer to successfully complete the program and qualify to apply for future year-round volunteering. Teen volunteers spend their days engaging visitors and sharing fascinating science stories throughout the building. While volunteering, teens divide their time between working in the Crown Family PlayLab, where they interact with young learners in a hands-on educational setting, and working in Stanley Field Hall, where they help with educational carts. When helping with these carts, teens show objects and samples from the museum’s rare collections for curious visitors.
Crystal Bridges Family Volunteer Opportunities
Crystal Bridges is currently welcoming family volunteers to join their active team! Children aged 10 to 13 are invited to volunteer alongside a favorite adult in their lives: a parent, a guardian, an aunt, or an older sibling. This program allows the youth to serve the community, connect with family members, and facilitate fun activities for Crystal Bridges guests. All volunteer applicants will receive equal consideration without regard to race, gender, or disability. The museum actively encourages minority volunteer applicants to join the team and enrich the cultural diversity of the institution.

Bertha Ngumbi, my mother, is one of the kindest women I know. However, when I was a child growing up in Kenya with my four siblings (兄弟姐妹), her kindness often annoyed us. Whenever visitors came to our home, whether relatives or strangers, expected or not, my mother would ask us to prepare and serve them black tea. If visitors arrived during lunch or dinner, she would invite them to eat with us, which meant less food for the family. As children, we felt unhappy and sometimes even complained about it.
My sister Faith especially disliked those moments when we had little firewood or when the wood was wet from rain, because making tea became difficult. My sisters and I even believed that some people took advantage of our mother’s generosity by appearing at mealtime.
Years later, after moving to the United States to live and teach, I began to see things differently. My mother’s kindness had deeply influenced me. Even when I struggled myself, I still tried to help relatives, friends, and even strangers. If unexpected visitors came to my house one day, I would warmly offer them tea and food, just as my mother always did.
Wanting to understand the source of her kindness, I asked my mother about it. She explained that she had learned it from her own mother, my grandmother. Growing up in a large family with eight siblings, my mother often returned home from school to discover that some of their lunch had been given away to hungry travelers. Although the children were upset at times, their mother continued helping others whenever she could.
When I asked my mother whether she would have changed if she had known we disliked her generosity, she answered firmly that she would never stop helping people. Today, I fully understand her actions and remain deeply grateful for the compassion (同情) she planted in me.
24. Why did the author dislike unexpected visitors when she was young
A.They interrupted family activities.
B.They always asked for more black tea.
C.Her family had to share meals with them.
D.Her siblings needed to serve them food first.
25. What did the author do after moving to the US
A.She avoided bothering others.
B.She lived a poor life for a long time.
C.She was friendly towards others.
D.She kept complaining about her mother.
26. Why did the author ask her mother about her kindness
A.To understand its origin.
B.To memorize her childhood.
C.To change her mother’s mind.
D.To express her gratitude.
27. How did the author’s attitude to her mother’s kindness change over time
A.From seeing it as a shame to a road map.
B.From not understanding it to valuing it.
C.From supporting it to complaining about it.
D.From taking it lightly to viewing it as a trouble.

All but two of Austria’s 96 glaciers (冰川) have retreated (缩小) over the last two years, the monitors in the Alpine country reported on Friday, saying the “dramatic development” highlights the impact of climate change. The latest report from the Austrian Alpine Club shows the Alpeiner Ferner in the western Tyrol region and Stubacher Sonnblickkees in Salzburg to the east are facing the greatest loss, each with a retreat of more than 100 meters (about 328 feet) . The average retreat was more than 20 meters (about 65 feet) .
“The breakdown of the glacier tongue is also progressing at the Pasterze, Austria’s largest glacier, making the results of climate change visible,” the club said in the report covering 2024 and 2025. It added, “The report confirms once again the long-term trend: The glaciers in Austria continue to retreat significantly in length, area, and volume.” Neighboring Switzerland, which is home to the most glaciers in Europe, has noted a similar retreat in its glaciers in recent years, a trend that has been reported around the world.
The retreat of the glaciers in Europe has implications for drinking water, power generation, agriculture, infrastructure, recreational activities, the Alpine landscape and more. “The glaciers are melting, and with every new report, the urgency grows,” club vice president Nicole Slupetzky said. “It’s no longer a question of whether we can still save the glaciers in their old form; it’s about relieving the results for ourselves.”
Poor weather conditions such as low snowfall, warm temperatures including an exceptionally hot June last year— nearly 5 degrees Celsius above the average— have contributed to the retreat, the club said. These factors accelerated the melting of ice. Without a shift in weather patterns, the trend will likely worsen.
Such changes in the Alps should serve as a “wake-up call” for policymakers and the public in their behavior, the club said. It added the current figure was lower than the figure during the previous two years, but still ranked as the eighth-largest retreat in the 135 years of measurements.
28. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A.All the glaciers in Austria have retreated.
B.Glacier retreat is a widespread phenomenon.

29. Which can explain the underlined word “implications” in paragraph 3
A.Quick solutions.
B.Simple designs.
C.Possible effects.
D.Full explanations.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.The causes of the glacier retreat.
B.The change of weather patterns.
C.The threats of climate change.
D.The average temperature of Austria.
31. What does the last paragraph stress
A.The current situation is better.
B.The glacier retreat is still serious.
C.Measuring glacier retreat takes time.
D.People’s behavior has changed a lot.

San Francisco Bay is one of the busiest waterways in the US. Ferries, cargo ships and tankers cut through its choppy (波浪起伏的) waters every day. Unfortunately, they share the bay with an unexpected visitor: gray whales searching for food.
Last year, 21 dead gray whales were found in the Bay Area, with at least 40% killed by ship strikes. Scientists believe the real number is even higher, since many bodies sink before being found. At least 10 more have died in the Bay Area so far this year.
The problem is getting worse because climate change has fundamentally changed gray whale migration patterns and feeding behaviors, forcing many starving whales to travel into San Francisco Bay in search of food. This presents significant dangers to whales that were previously able to avoid such busy ocean areas. The choppy bay conditions often make whales nearly invisible to ship crews, creating dangerous situations where strikes become likely.
To solve this crisis, researchers have launched WhaleSpotter, an AI-powered detection network that scans the bay to track them day and night. Using cameras installed on islands and ships, the system spots whale blows and heat signatures up to 2 nautical miles (海里) away. Researchers say the system’s biggest advantage is constant monitoring. Unlike human observers, these cameras can operate through the night and in foggy conditions, which are common in the bay.
When a whale is detected, AI automatically flags the sighting, which is then confirmed by trained marine mammal observers before warnings are sent via radio to ship operators. This allows ships to slow down or change course when whales are nearby. “They’ll be able to make adjustments before they get anywhere close,” said Thomas Hall, director of operations for San Francisco Bay Ferry.
The network is the first to directly combine land-based and ship detection with official ship warnings. Scientists hope to add more cameras on the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, expanding coverage across the entire bay and creating safer waters for these endangered creatures.
32. What has led to gray whales entering San Francisco Bay
A.Fewer natural enemies in the bay.
B.The shortage of their original food sources.
C.Climate-caused changes in reproducing habits.
D.The abundance of food created by shipping activities.
33. Why are many gray whales killed by ship strikes in San Francisco Bay
A.No monitoring system existed before.
B.Marine mammal observers refuse to work at night.
C.Heavy traffic and poor visibility work together.
D.Climate change has worsened the foggy conditions.
34. What can we learn about WhaleSpotter
A.It replaces human observers.
B.It allows ships to react early.
C.It communicates directly with ship operators.
D.It covers the whole San Francisco Bay area.
35. What can be inferred about the future of gray whales in San Francisco Bay
A.Their chances of survival will likely increase.
B.They will grow rapidly in population.
C.Their living environment will improve.
D.They will no longer be threatened by ship strikes.

Joey was a fourteen-year-old boy who was found to have a special developmental disorder that greatly influenced his daily life and communication with other people. Because of this problem, he found it very hard to show his love through body contact. Ever since he was little, he never held his mother Amanda’s hand, and he never let her give him a soft hug or kiss before he went to bed.
Joey felt extremely tired and stressed in social environments, and it was nearly impossible for him to make new friends. For this reason, Joey usually stayed alone in his bedroom in his free time, with little connection to the outside world.
Although Joey had great difficulty getting along with people, he had kept asking his mother for a dog for a long time. As a single mother raising three sons, Amanda strongly wished to cheer her son up and help him build connections with others. She started to look for local animal rescue centers online carefully, hoping that a pet could help her son open up little by little.
One afternoon, when she was browsing a pet rescue website, she saw a picture of Roxy — a kind and lovely dog waiting quietly for a new home. Roxy always looked happy, with a special walking posture and bright warm eyes. Amanda had heard different opinions about this kind of dog, but she firmly believed that such dogs, just like teenagers with developmental difficulties, were often not truly understood by most people.
Amanda drove to the animal rescue center in Los Angeles at once and finished all the adoption procedures. She felt a little worried but very hopeful that a faithful partner could finally help Joey step out of his closed world.
The workers at the center gave her the rope for walking Roxy. The dog shook her tail happily, ready for her new life. On her way home, Amanda kept thinking about how her son would react to this lovely and energetic surprise waiting for him at their home.

When Amanda brought Roxy home, something unbelievable happened. Seeing the dog, Joey, who always stayed alone, walked forward slowly instead of hiding away. Roxy wagged its tail and rubbed against his hand softly. To Amanda’s surprise, Joey didn’t pull back. He gently stroked Roxy’s fur and a faint smile appeared on his face. It was the first time Joey accepted physical contact from a living creature.
Over the next few weeks, Joey and Roxy became inseparable. Roxy accompanied him everywhere. Every day Joey took it for walks and chatted to it. Gradually, Joey changed a lot. He began to greet neighbors and classmates outside. Thanks to Roxy, Joey walked out of his lonely world and became much more outgoing.
