In 2009, American composer Eric Whitacre got a wonderful idea. One day at home, he watched a fan’s video that surprised him deeply. A girl named Britlin was singing his composition Sleep alone in her bedroom with a simple web camera. It struck Whitacre that music could bridge the gap between people from different cultures.
Thus the Virtual Choir (虚拟合唱团) was started. Whitacre posted a call online, asking people worldwide to record themselves singing the piece Lux Aurumque and send it to him. He had expected about 50 videos, but received 185 from 12 countries. His team spent much time editing the videos, and the final video was uploaded in 2010. It showed many singers on screen performing together from thousands of miles apart and soon went viral.
The project grew rapidly. Later, over 2,000 singers from 58 countries submitted videos. A farmer in Nebraska sang alongside a student in Tokyo. Even though they had never met, they created beautiful and touching music together.
Yet there were many challenges. Submissions were in different formats and sound quality varied greatly. Some failed to keep the beat, others had background noise. The team spent months producing and matching the videos patiently. Besides technical problems, singing alone in front of a camera also felt unnatural for many singers. “You have to imagine everyone else,” explained James Green. “You can’t hear them. You have to believe they’re there. It’s an act of faith.”
In 2020, Whitacre organized and led the Virtual Choir’s biggest event, featuring over 17,000 singers from 129 countries. Its theme was “May we sing together, though we are apart.”
Whitacre believes the project shows a basic human need. We all want to be part of something bigger and meaningful. The Virtual Choir uses modern technology to carry on the tradition of singing together and connects people worldwide through the power of music.

In September 2023, NASA’s powerful James Webb Space Telescope made an exciting discovery — a distant planet named K2-18b, located 120 light-years away, showed strange gas signals in its air that might be linked to ocean life. This marks the first time scientists have found possible signs of alien life using telescope data.
The telescope detected a gas called dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in the planet’s air mixture. On Earth, this gas is only made by tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton. “It’s like smelling seaweed on another planet, “explained Dr Nikku Madhusudhan, an astronomer from Cambridge University. The findings were shared in a famous science journal.
How did scientists do this The Webb telescope used a “color analysis method”. When K2-18b passed in front of its star, the telescope studied how starlight changed as it filtered (渗入) through the planet’s air — similar to how sunlight creates rainbows. Different chemicals leave unique “color fingerprints”. After checking 278 times, scientists finally spotted DMS clues in the messy data.
But experts warn this isn’t confirmed yet. “We might need 10 more years of observations to be sure,” said lead researcher professor Pierre-Olivier Lagage. While volcanoes could sometimes produce similar gas, K2-18b’s conditions make life more likely. The planet sits in the “Goldilocks zone” where temperatures allow liquid water, and earlier studies suggest it’s covered by a giant ocean.
NASA plans to launch a new telescope in the 2030s to study chemicals on such planets in detail. China’s upcoming Xuntian Space Telescope will also join the search. “If we confirm this is truly alien life,” said professor Lagage, “it will completely change how we see our place in space.”
For now, the discovery has sparked global excitement. K2-18b’s data is stored on a special hard drive at the Space Telescope Science Institute, waiting for future scientists to unlock more secrets.
