Space tourism is not all about rockets — giant space balloons can do it too! The Spain-based company HALO Space completed the first test flight of its balloon in December 2023. This marked another company’s joining the competition of making space tourism a reality.
During the test flight, the balloon reached an altitude of 37 kilometers where passengers would be able to view Earth from the blackness of space, according to Daily Mail. When the flights are available, the company aims to carry 3,000 passengers on 400 trips every year.
The balloon is usually filled with helium (氦气) or hydrogen, which are both much lighter than air, and it flies because of the buoyancy force (浮力). According to NASA, the balloon is filled with the amount of gas that will give it enough lift to get off the ground and rise. As it rises, the gas inside the balloon expands because atmospheric pressure drops. The atmosphere is 100 to 200 times less dense (稠密的) at float altitudes than on the ground. The balloon stops when the density of the gas inside and the air outside is about the same — neutral buoyancy (中性浮力) is achieved. It then begins to descend (下降) as gas is let out.
Therefore, the whole trip is not stressful. Another company that gives out space tours by balloons, the US-based Space Perspective claims that the trips are about relaxation. The craft (飞行器) rises slowly at 12 miles (about 19.3 kilometers) per hour, and it takes about two hours to get to the 30 km altitude.
Since its successful test flight in June 2022, Space Perspective started selling tickets for spaceflights in 2024 — and it has already sold out. The company now buys ships to turn them into “floating spaceports”, reported Daily Mail. By lifting the craft from ships on the sea, there will be more launch opportunities, such as flights at sun rise and sunset.

I once thought that outward beauty was the only factor to become a great person. When I was young, I read many kinds of books, most of which described characters who are handsome or beautiful. So I thought that being beautiful was the only way to become a success.
As I grew up, the story of my best friend made me realize that outward beauty was not so important to make a person successful. She was so beautiful a girl that every classmate liked to chat with her, but she was very arrogant. In her opinion, she could get all she wanted because of her beauty, but all of her friends left her one by one! Only then did she come to know the importance of the beauty in a person’s heart, which changed her attitude and she made friends again.
Turning on TV, we can see many advertisements, most of which seem to give us a feeling that physical attractiveness is the most important thing. There seems to be a boom in plastic surgery. It is surprising that more and more people, especially girls and women, try it like the first man-made beauty in China, Hao Lulu. It is a common sense that attractive people can easily find work. Most good-looking guys usually get higher scores in the job interviews. But what is real beauty I want to say that is inner beauty because those who have beauty in their soul are really beautiful persons.
As is known, the beauty judged with eyes is temporary, so we should concentrate on inner beauty. And if we make the efforts to make our minds beautiful, we’ll live a happier life.
8. What did the author learn from her friend’s story
A.It is terrible to be a beautiful girl.
B.It is not easy to make friends with beautiful girls.
C.Outer beauty is not so important to become a successful person.
D.Inner beauty is the most important to become a successful person.
9. What does the underlined word “arrogant” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.self-important B.successful C.beautiful D.excellent
10. What is the author’s attitude to plastic surgery
A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Indifferent. D.Unclear.
11. What is the text mainly about
A.Inner beauty is the real beauty.
B.How do attractive persons become successful
C.The key factor to find a good job is being attractive.
D.Plastic surgery is the best way to make a person more beautiful.

A new study has revealed that the chemicals in air pollution may rob some flowers of their scent (香味) and make them more difficult for pollinators (传粉者) to find. The researchers discovered that nitrate radicals (NO3) and ozone (NO3), common by-products of car waste gas and burning fossil fuels, are main pollutants that weaken the wildflowers’ scent.
Ecologist Jeremy Chan and his colleagues put bags over pale evening primrose flowers to trap the flowers’ scent. They took the scent back to the lab, along with some hawkmoths. Hawkmoths are one of the pollinators drawn to the primrose’s scent. Then they released the primrose’s scent and hawkmoths into the air flowing into a wind tunnel. At once, they watched the moths easily flying upwind and tracking the scent. But it was a different story when pollutants, like ozone and nitrate radicals, were added to the mix. Now, the moths flew in a wavy line. They seemed to be seeking the scent — often without success.
The team then tested its findings in nature. One cold night, they set up a field of artificial and real flowers. They found moths had up to a 70% decline in accuracy of finding the flower sources when nitrate radicals were introduced. The same reactions could hurt flower scent by day. But because sunlight can break down much of the ozone, the problem is likely less serious for day pollinators.
In January, scientists published a separate study on the potential impacts of air pollution on insect pollination. That study similarly noted how air pollutants can impact flower scent as well as visual clues, such as plant petal (花瓣) size and potential color.
The growing research on how air pollutants affect pollinators and plants highlights the dangers of air pollution to insect pollinators. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, 40% of global insect pollinators are endangered. If pollution remains serious, it will further threaten the pollinators and the plants’ reproduction.
12. What makes it harder for pollinators to locate flowering plants
A.The short flowering season.
B.The terrible smell in the air.
C.The breakdown of the flower scent.
D.The unappealing appearance of flowers.
13. How did researchers carry out the study
A.By analyzing typical cases. B.By referring to another study.
C.By collecting previous records. D.By combining lab and field tests.
14. What can be inferred about night pollinators from paragraph 3
A.They fly longer than day pollinators.
B.They are sensitive to polluted flowers.
C.They certainly search fruitlessly for scent clues.
D.They face a greater threat than day pollinators.
15. What is the author’s real purpose in mentioning the study in January
A.To compare it with the new study.
B.To evaluate the role pollinators play.
C.To stress the urgency of reducing pollution.
D.To erase doubts about the findings of the new study.

五、书面表达
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Tim had always struggled with his weight. He loved food, but at school, he often found himself the target of cruel jokes and teasing.
His classmates would call him names like “Big Tim” and make fun of his size, and though Tim tried to ignore it, it still hurt. Every day, he wished he could be like the athletic kids, running fast and playing sports with ease, but that always seemed out of reach.
One day, a group of his classmates — three boys who were notorious for their pranks (恶作剧) — decided to play a trick on him. They knew Tim wasn’t athletic, and they thought it would be funny to sign him up for the upcoming school’s long-distance race. They figured he’d panic when he found out and that it would be fun to watch him fail. Without telling Tim, they registered his name for the race.
On race day, as Tim walked across the track trying to join his classmates in the stands, he saw some of them holding giant posters of his face with slogans like “The Big Runner” and “Go Tim!” He froze. He realized what had happened — the boys had tricked him into racing. His face turned red with embarrassment, but the crowd was already watching, and he felt trapped.
The starting gun fired, and to everyone’s surprise, Tim began to jog. It wasn’t fast, and he could barely keep up with the other runners, but he kept moving. His legs burned with each step, and his breath came in sharp gasps, but he didn’t stop. His classmates’ laughter echoed in his ears, but he ignored it.
As the race went on, something shifted. A few students who weren’t part of the prank started cheering for him. “Come on, Tim! You can do it!” they yelled. Their encouragement made Tim feel lighter, and his pace picked up just a little. It wasn’t about winning anymore; it was about proving to himself that he could finish.

Changes in Spring Festival Celebrations
Great changes have taken place in how we celebrate the Spring Festival. In the past, families gathered to make dumplings and visit relatives face to face. Now many people send red envelopes online and chat with distant family via video calls. Instead of watching the Spring Festival Gala together at home, some choose to travel during the holiday.
In my opinion, these new ways add fun and convenience. However, we should keep traditional customs to carry forward our culture.
五、读后续写 参考范文
By the time Tim reached the final lap, he was tired out. His legs ached terribly and sweat covered his whole body. He wanted to stop and give up badly. Just then, warm cheers from kind classmates reached his ears. He took a deep breath, wiped his sweat and kept moving forward step by step. He ignored the noisy laughs from the three boys who tricked him, focusing only on the finish line ahead.
The crowd erupted in applause. All students stood up and cheered loudly for Tim. Even the three naughty boys felt ashamed and went over to say sorry to Tim. Tim smiled and told them he didn’t mind anymore. This race taught Tim that courage and persistence matter more than looks or speed. From that day on, he began running every day and gradually became confident in himself.
