Contest Rules

Iowa has long been known as the heartland of farming in the U. S. But a changing climate and environment are washing away soil and weakening its health. However, most family farmers here, who have owned and worked the land for generations, recognize soil health is crucial in reducing the worst effects of climate change.
Wendy Johnson left Iowa to pursue a career in fashion in California in 2002. But when her grandmother passed away, Wendy began thinking about the legacy (遗产) of the family farm: She didn’t want to see all the hard work her grandparents and parents put into the land here lost.
Thus, in 2010, Wendy returned and began co-managing the family farm, Center View Farm, with her father. Center View Farm was already an early adopter of no-till (免耕) farming then. Tilling the soil actually degrades soil health. Experts estimate the planet loses billions of tons of rich soil each year. This would be a disaster for the world’s food systems unless regenerative agricultural practices, which help fight climate change and grow food while restoring nature, are adopted. For example, in no-till farming, new seeds are planted directly into the residue (残留) of previous crops.
But Wendy wanted to do more. Since she moved back, Wendy has been working with Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), a farmer-led nonprofit, to innovate the way her family farms. She managed to plant various cover crops to preserve the richness of the soil. Pancreatic (胰腺的) cancer is one of the deadliest diseases in the world. One major reason is that early detection is extremely difficult. Patients usually show no obvious symptoms until the cancer has already spread. By then, treatment options are limited and often fails.
Doctors typically use contrast CT scans to confirm pancreatic cancer. These scans require injecting special dye into the patient’s bloodstream and involve high levels of radiation. Because of this, experts generally do not recommend widespread screening for healthy people. Noncontrast CT scans, which use less radiation, are safer but produce less clear images. As a result, radiologists often struggle to spot early signs of tumors (肿瘤) in these scans.
However, artificial intelligence may offer a solution. At the hospital where Dr. Zhu Kelei works, the Affiliated People’s Hospital of Ningbo University, doctors started using a new AI tool called PANDA, short for “pancreatic cancer detection with artificial intelligence” as part of a clinical trial in November 2024. Developed by the Chinese tech giant Alibaba, PANDA is specially trained to find pancreatic cancer in noncontrast CT scans.
The hospital has used PANDA to analyze over 180,000 abdominal and chest CT scans. The tool has helped doctors detect about 24 cases of pancreatic cancer, 20 of which were ductal adenocarcinoma, the most common and deadly type. Among these, 14 were found at an early stage, most of whom had come to the hospital for unrelated complaints and their scans had not initially raised any concerns until the AI system identified the problem.
Qiu Sijun, a 57-year-old retired bricklayer, went to the hospital for a routine diabetes checkup. The AI tool had flagged something unusual in Mr. Qiu’s CT scan. Further examination confirmed that he had pancreatic cancer — but fortunately, it was still in the early stage. Dr. Zhu was able to remove the tumor successfully.
Despite its promise, experts remind that PANDA is not perfect. It cannot replace pancreatic specialists, sometimes confuses pancreatitis with cancer, and cannot determine whether a tumor started in the pancreas or spread from elsewhere. Still, as a backstop for hospitals short of specialists, the tool offers a valuable new line of defense against one of medicine’s most stubborn killers.

In today’s world, more and more young people use the internet to connect with others. They even keep in touch by sharing short videos on apps like TikTok and YouTube. However, it’s often difficult to tell if the content is good for them. Under this background, the Danish government announced to stop children under 15 from using certain social media platforms. This plan shows a key problem for modern parents: while social media is a big part of young people’s lives, its possible harmful impact is becoming more concerning.
The government made this decision based on distinct data and social trends. National surveys in Denmark show that most children under 13 are already active on social media. Officials say that young people are easily influenced by the questionable content on these platforms. Seeing one-sided opinions can lead to poor thinking about complicated issues, which may weaken their ability to think critically. Also, the need to be online all the time can ruin sleep quality and weaken the concentration needed for learning and healthy growth.
Nevertheless, putting this policy into practice is full of challenges. In a world where children can easily access screens, the biggest problem lies in how to make it work effectively. The proposal suggests a system with different rules for different ages: children aged 13 to 15 need parental agreement, while those under 10 are not allowed at all.
