Sixteen-year-old Leo Bennett lives a life different from most teenagers. While most kids enjoy busy school days and fun outdoor activities, he has suffered from a chronic illness since he was 12. The serious health problem forces him to spend most of his time in hospital instead of going to school or hanging out with friends. Long-term medical treatment brings him constant physical pain and also leaves him with strong feelings of loneliness day after day.
To kill boring time during long hospital stays, Leo picked up drawing by accident. He did not receive any professional training at first. He simply painted the little warm moments he saw in the ward: kind nurses, bright sunshine through windows, and patients supporting each other silently. These small scenes made his hard days a little warmer.
Later, a local charity organized a painting program for teenage patients, just like the photography project for cancer kids. Leo joined it without hesitation. He communicated with other sick teens through paintings, and they shared their fears and hopes hidden in heart.
Recently, Leo’s paintings were shown in a community exhibition. All money earned from his works was donated to help more young patients in need. For Leo, painting is far more than a hobby. It helps him fight negative feelings and find his own value beyond his illness.
Hardships are common in life. We can never stay away from sufferings, but we can find our own light in tough days. A simple hobby can give us strength, connect us with others, and let us pass kindness to people around us.

B.He had to stay in hospital for a long time.
C.He refused to make new friends.

44.What can we infer from the passage
A.Leo picked up drawing long before illness.
B.The program lifted the sick teens’ spirits.
C.The art show took place in hospital.
D.Leo has fully recovered from sickness.
45.What can be learned about Leo’s personality from the passage
A.Calm and shy. B.Positive and kind. C.Sad and weak. D.Funny and careless.
Every summer night, tiny bright lights fly around grasslands and woods. They are fireflies, amazing insects with natural lights. Many people wonder how these little bugs produce light without batteries or electricity. Some people even think fireflies carry small lamps inside their bodies, but this idea is totally wrong.
Scientists have found the key secret inside fireflies’ bodies. They have special cells filled with two special materials: luciferin and luciferase. When oxygen enters their bodies, the two things mix together and make a soft green light. This light is cold light. It does not produce any heat, which is totally different from light bulbs. Scientists have studied this special light technology for decades, and they hope to create new energy-saving lights for daily life.
Fireflies use their lights for two main purposes. First, male fireflies flash special light patterns to attract female fireflies. Each kind of firefly has its own unique flash rhythm. Second, the light can warn other animals not to eat them. Fireflies taste terrible to birds and frogs, so their bright lights work as a warning sign. Lots of wild researchers have recorded different flash styles of fireflies in different natural areas.
However, firefly numbers are falling fast these years. Too much city light, polluted rivers and lost wild grasslands break their living environment. Many fireflies cannot find partners to produce young fireflies. If we want to see beautiful firefly lights in summer, we should protect natural environments and reduce unnecessary light pollution. Local governments also begin to build small natural parks for fireflies to live safely.
46.What makes fireflies produce light
A.Small batteries are hidden inside their bodies.
B.Two special natural materials mixed with oxygen.
C.Heat from the sun lights up their whole bodies.
D.Glowing stones lie inside their tiny bodies.
47.What is the special feature of fireflies’ light
A.It works like lamps. B.It creates no heat.
C.It changes into red light. D.It can light up large forests.
48.Why do male fireflies send out flashes
A.To scare away dangerous snakes. B.To catch small flying insects.
C.To attract female fireflies. D.To find clean water.
49.What leads to the drop of firefly populations
A.Greatly reduced rainfall and dry weather in summer.
B.City light pollution and damaged wild homes.
C.Too many wild birds catching them.
D.High temperature in summer.
50.Which of the following is the best title of the passage
A.A Simple Introduction to Fireflies. B.Glowing Insects Around the World.
