Moulin Rouge! The Musical Starts Impressive Shanghai Performance
To celebrate its 66th year, Grand Gateway 66 partnered with SMG LIVE to bring the world tour performers of Moulin Rouge! The Musical to China for the first time. On 30 April, the Scope Awards 2026 ceremony took place. The awards are run by the disability charity Scope, which was founded in 1952. They celebrate people and charities that are working to put an end to unfair and unequal treatment for those with disabilities.
Nine awards were given out at the ceremony. Some recognised individuals, including a social media influencer, and others awarded organisations, such as a community group.
The Purple Pioneer award went to Yasmin Darling, an individual who has advanced disability equality in their community. As a disabled mum, Darling designed a special learning programme for disabled teenagers who can’t go to regular schools. Her adapted national curriculum (课程) can be changed to suit each child’s needs so that they can build confidence and form friendships. Darling said the award will help her to get funding to “keep doing what I’m doing”.
The Local Service award went to Circus (马戏团) Starr, a UK charity that adapts circus performances so they’re easy to enjoy for children with disabilities or special educational needs. They go on three tours every year, reaching more than 70 communities. During performances, lights and sound are adjusted to avoid making some kids feel stressed. Rosie Jones, a comedian with cerebral palsy (脑性瘫痪), got the Celebrity Role Model Award. We’re always in a rush to get more done faster. But what if speed isn’t actually as helpful as we might think New research published in the European Journal of Neuroscience suggests that slow and steady (稳定) may win the race, with older people who avoid rushing through work performing significantly better at tasks that require concentration.
Researchers from the University of Glasgow divided a small group of participants into two groups (aged 55-87 and 18-27), who each wore special caps to record brainwaves as they completed a task that required focused attention.
Each group was asked to react to numbers flashing on a computer screen, pressing a key when a number came up, but not pressing if it was a three or a six. While the older group were slower by around a seventh of a second, they were only wrong around 8% of the time. While faster, young people were wrong nearly 24% of the time.
Previously, it was assumed that older people might be slower at certain tasks because they got tired easily. To investigate this, researchers arranged high-concentration tasks that lasted 45 minutes, and found that older people didn’t show signs of tiredness or perform worse, suggesting that older people perform slower simply because they are choosing accuracy over speed.
Interestingly, when offered a 50 bonus (奖金) payment for the highest score in the concentration task, young participants did take their time, but ultimately performed worse than the older group.
So, next time you feel like rushing, consider slowing down your pace. A little patience could go a long way.

Global warming caused by humanity’s carbon release has been slowing the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a system of currents (洋流) that warms Europe. If the AMOC collapsed (崩溃) entirely, it could release massive amounts of carbon from the deep Southern Ocean into the atmosphere.
Previous research has shown that AMOC collapse could increase global temperatures. Now, new computer modelling has shown it would send as much as 640 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere near Antarctica, heating the planet by an additional 0.2°C. Da Nian, leader of the study, states the collapse will mix seawater and set free carbon kept in deep ocean water.
Driven by differences in water density (密度), the AMOC brings warm, salty water from the Gulf of Mexico to the northern Atlantic, where it cools and sinks, returning southward along the seafloor. But scientists think melting ice from the Greenland ice sheet is providing the AMOC with fresh water, which weakens the sinking process and slows the current.
Large amounts of carbon have been stored in the deep Southern Ocean for years. The study modeled AMOC collapse under different climate conditions. It found that if CO2 amount in the atmosphere reached 350 parts per million or above, the AMOC would fail to recover once it collapsed. Current CO2 levels stand at 430 ppm, which suggests the collapse of AMOC will be irreversible.
The study also found that the collapse of the AMOC would push deep water up toward the sea surface near Antarctica. The deep water here, which is largely locked under a layer of fresher surface water, has gathered carbon from the atmosphere and the sinking ocean organisms. The model suggested much of this carbon would be released into the atmosphere.
Jonathan Baker at the UK Met Office, the country’s national weather service, says the study depends on whether Southern Ocean water movement strengthens, and that’s still quite uncertain.
