Many kids love playing sports, but being a professional athlete can be difficult. What will happen when a boy who loves basketball realizes he may not be tall enough to make it on the court For Amar Shah, that realization did not end his dream — it helped him find a new one.
Shah, a journalist and author of the graphic novel Wish I Was a Baller, turned his love for a famous basketball team into a writing career that began in eighth grade. “I knew I couldn’t make it as a basketball player, because I didn’t have that needed height,” Shah shared with a laugh. “So, I found my closest way to the court — through journalism.”
That choice led to some incredible opportunities. While still in high school, Shah earned press permission and began interviewing basketball legends. Thinking back on his first interview with a famous basketball player, Shah said, “Here I am, not even five feet tall, and he’s seven feet. He talked to me for 30 minutes, like we were friends.” Kids can use reading and writing to stay close to the sport they love. There are numerous ways to work in sports without competing.
In Wish I Was a Baller, Shah shared his professional journey, and he hoped that it would encourage young people to keep going. “Whatever your dreams are, continue striving for them, because you never know where they’ll take you,” he said.
Many sports fans enjoy reading books about the game they love. From player autobiographies to fictional tournaments, there is something for everyone. Teenage Scholastic Kid Reporter Asher Freije is an athlete and sports fan who enjoys reading. He shared his advice for athletes who want to read more. “Find books on the sport you love. If you love that sport, then you most likely will love that book, because it’s something you already enjoy,” he said. He also explained how reading could inspire new interests, sharing that a book about wrestling once inspired his interest in that sport.
24. What was Shah’s original dream
A.To become a sports journalist.
B.To write stories about basketball.
C.To join a famous journalism team.
D.To be a professional basketball player.
25. What is the tone of Wish I Was a Baller
A.Romantic.
B.Inspirational.
C.Ironic.
D.Pessimistic.
26. What message did Asher Freije convey in the last paragraph
A.Wrestling is a popular teenage sport.
B.Reading sports books benefits players.
C.Athletes should read only sports books.
D.Being good at a sport can win more fans.
27. What can be concluded from the text
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.Many hands make light work.
C.All roads lead to Rome.
D.Actions speak louder than words.
C
Search online and you will find countless DIYbio trends that promise healthier aging, from using hyperbaric oxygen therapy to sleeping under red lights. But research from Tufts University points to a much simpler lifestyle change that appears to work: eating slightly fewer calories.
The findings come from CALERIE, short for Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy. In the study, 143 participants tried to reduce their calorie intake by 25% for two years, while 75 others continued eating normally as the control group.
Researchers found notable improvements among the participants who reduced calories. Many shifted their diets away from fats and toward more protein and carbohydrates. Although the group achieved only about a 12% calorie reduction instead of the targeted 25%, they still experienced significant declines in blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and insulin levels compared with the control group. A paper released earlier this year found that lowering calorie intake did not reduce the overall nutritional quality of participants’ diets.
“The most exciting part is that we saw these benefits with only a moderate level of restriction that’s feasible for most people. It doesn’t have to take extreme measures. For some people, just skipping a large daily sugary coffee drink can do the trick,” says Sai Krupa Das, one of the researchers.
Researchers are still unable to understand exactly why calorie restriction boosts health. One theory is that eating less helps the body generate energy more efficiently while producing fewer reactive oxygen species, unstable molecules (分子) that can damage cells and contribute to diseases ranging from cancer to Parkinson’s disease. One test confirmed that the participants in the calorie restriction group had lower levels of these molecules than the control group.
The CALERIE project is still ongoing. Researchers still do not know whether calorie restriction works best as a permanent lifestyle or as a shorter-term intervention. “I think the follow-up was necessary given such promising results in the primary study, and it is crucial to see how things play out over time,” Das says.
28. What is the effective way to slow aging according to the research from Tufts University
A.Receiving oxygen treatment.
B.Using red lights while sleeping.
C.Trying various DIYbio methods.
D.Cutting down food calories a little.
29. What do we know about the calorie-cutting participants
A.They took in much less protein.
B.They quitted before the deadline.
C.Their health indicators turned better generally.
D.Their diets were richer than the control group’s.
30. What does the underlined word “feasible” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Strange. B.Practical. C.Suspicious. D.Predictable.
31. Why do researchers carry out further research
A.To explore long-term effects of calorie restriction.
B.To figure out new approaches to restricting calories.
C.To explain why calorie restriction improves health.
D.To detect how reactive oxygen species harm health.
D
To the untrained eye, there is very little difference between the three known versions of the artwork The Lute Player. Almost identical in composition, the paintings all portray a young subject, in white clothes and with an instrument in hand, turning slightly away from the viewer. Each appears to carry Italian painter Caravaggio’s distinctive mastery of light and shadow.
To art historians, however, there has long been broad agreement: The versions held by Russia’s Hermitage Museum and France’s Wildenstein Collection were created by Caravaggio, while the one at Britain’s Badminton House is merely a copy.
A Swiss tech company begged to differ, and it claimed there was an almost 86% chance that Badminton House’s version is authentic. The company’s AI model, which was trained to recognize markers of Caravaggio’s style, including shapes, color palettes and compositional structures, also declared (though with less statistical certainty) that Wildenstein’s version was likely a copy. Its analysis found “a significant difference” between the latter painting’s “visual characteristics” and those of Caravaggio’s other works.
The company’s declarations have not always contradicted the established scholarship. It claimed that a long-debated painting of Vincent van Gogh at the National Museum in Oslo had a 97% chance of being genuine. The Vincent van Gogh authorship was later matched by more conventional research, including technical analyses and studies of the artist’s letters.
The company’s authentication approach combines machine learning, deep neural networks and computer vision algorithms (算法). To date, the company has produced models for over 200 artists. In each, the AI is trained on two photographic datasets: a “positive” one, containing images of recognized paintings by the artist mentioned, and a “negative” one comprising similar but inauthentic works. The company emphasized that having a “high degree of similarity” between the two datasets to learn the difference is crucial.
“I have reservations about it. Authentication is rarely just about surface style,” said art historian Sharon Hecker. “You have to know about the workshop, practices, materials, the condition of the work, the restoration history, and how a particular artist’s work evolved over time.”
32. What do we know about the three versions of The Lute Player
A.They are recognized as Caravaggio’s artworks.
B.They are refused by famous European museums.
C.They look almost the same to non-professionals.
D.They differ greatly in composition and light use.
33. Why is the Vincent van Gogh’s painting mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To prove AI research has its reliability.
B.To show the limits of traditional art study.
C.To compare different creating styles of art.
D.To stress the difficulty in painting creation.
34. What is Sharon Hecker’s attitude to the AI authentication method
A.Supportive. B.Curious. C.Indifferent. D.Doubtful.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Conflicts of Caravaggio’s Artworks
B.AI Joins in the Artwork Identification
C.AI represents Traditional Art Appreciation
D.Approaches to Preserving Old Masterpieces

Last Saturday afternoon, sunlight streamed through my kitchen window and fell on the desk covered with baking ingredients. My parents and I were making several apple desserts for leisure. The air was filled with the sweetness of baked apples. Baking with my family is my favorite bonding activity, which fills our home with warmth and makes me aware of the true value of sharing happiness with loved ones.
It was then that I thought of my dad’s good friend Mark, a single dad raising two young children alone. Burdened with endless work tasks, he barely had spare time to arrange interesting parent-child activities. My dad often talked about Mark’s dilemma and once sighed, “Work takes up most of Mark’s time, leaving him no chance to accompany his kids.”
One day, I overheard Mark say to my dad, “I really hope to find an easy activity to bond with my boys on weekends.” Mark also mentioned that many single parents in the neighborhood faced the same problem and had no access to exchanging practical ideas. I couldn’t help feeling sincere sympathy for the hard-working father and his lovely kids.
A sudden idea flashed through my mind. Why not prepare a special apple dessert DIY kit for him This user-friendly pack required no complicated skills and suited parent-child cooperation perfectly. It could save Mark plenty of time and allow him and his children to enjoy the pleasure of baking together. Most importantly, this simple activity could help the busy family create precious memories.
I shared my creative idea with my parents, and they praised me for my kindness and thoughtfulness. Immediately, we got down to work. We carefully prepared all the ingredients: sliced apples, a mixture of oats (燕麦) and flour, butter, sugar and spices, all neatly portioned into separate bowls. I also wrote a detailed hand-written instruction card with simple steps and warm wishes, hoping our little gift could bring the whole family a delightful weekend.

写作第二节范文
The next afternoon, my parents and I visited Mark’s house with the gift. Mark and his two boys welcomed us warmly. Seeing the neatly packed DIY kit and my handwritten card, Mark was deeply touched. The kids jumped with joy, eager to try baking apple desserts at once. We stayed for a while and told them simple baking tips. Before we left, Mark thanked us repeatedly, saying this gift would bring him and his sons a wonderful weekend.
Moved by our kindness, Mark chose to pass on the warmth. He shared the fun of parent-child baking with other single parents in the neighborhood. He even gathered them to exchange easy DIY activity ideas for kids. Soon, a small community sharing group formed. Whenever they held baking activities, they would send us some homemade apple desserts. Small kindness spread around the neighborhood, filling everyone’s daily life with gentle warmth.
