Joe and Arthur were twin brothers. Joe thought red, the color of Liverpool FC, was great, while Arthur, born a few seconds earlier, believed blue, the color of Everton FC, was much better. This silly argument about football teams happened almost every day, which annoyed their mother a lot.
One Saturday afternoon, the two boys were playing football with friends on an open space by the roadside, when a car suddenly turned a corner at high speed, hit the kerb, and knocked down four children, including the twins. Both were rushed to hospital. Arthur was only slightly hurt, but Joe took a heavy blow to the head and fell into unconsciousness.
After an uncomfortable night, Arthur was allowed to go home the next day. However, instead of resting, he went straight to Joe’s room. He took Joe’s red pyjama (睡衣裤) out from under the pillow. “He’ll need it,” Arthur told his mother with his voice trembling. “It’ll make him better. I want him home.” Their mother took the item to the hospital and dressed Joe in the red pyjama.
The following day, Arthur returned, wearing one of Joe’s red shirts. He sat beside his brother’s bed, held Joe’s hand, and began to sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” softly to wake his brother up, saying he would never argue again. Suddenly, Joe’s face turned. He opened his eyes, looked at Arthur, and smiled weakly. “It’s only a game,” he whispered. “I’ll always love you, too.” The doctor arrived and, after a quick examination, announced that Joe was recovering.
A week later, Joe fully recovered. One day, before going to watch a match with their father, he received a Liverpool badge from Arthur, who wished his team good luck. Joe waved back and said, “Thanks. And I hope your blue team does well today. You sing beautifully, you know.”
Watching them from the window, their mother was moved to tears. She knew the twin brothers would always stand by each other, for they would never walk alone.

How do you pay for things in a shop You might rely on the reliability of hard cash, the flexibility of a credit card, or the simple convenience of a smartphone. Whatever you use today, experts predict that all these methods could soon become outdated. Instead, we will use our bodies: our eyes, our fingerprints, even our presence in the store.
In fact, this shift is already underway. A foreign company has checkout-free stores where technology tracks items taken from shelves and automatically deducts (扣除) the total from customers’ accounts when they leave. Amir Sajed, CEO of a company, claims that such innovations spell the end of the plastic credit card. Instead, wearable items like rings, wristlets, and keychains equipped with chips will allow shoppers to “seamlessly (无缝地) shop across the web, via an app, or in a store”.
However, not everyone is enthusiastic about this future. Privacy supporters warn that biometric (生物识别的) payment systems could expose sensitive personal data to misuse. “Once your fingerprint is stolen, you cannot change it like a password,” warns a network security expert Maria Gonzalez. Unlike a credit card, which can be canceled, biological characters are fixed. This concern throws doubt on whether consumers will fully accept such technologies.
Meanwhile, traditional currencies (货币) are not the only game in town. Virtual currencies have gained attention, capable of rising sharply in value — yet equally easy to crashes and net-attacks. The film In Time imagines an even more futuristic society, where time itself becomes currency, and people trade the years left in their lives. Strangely enough, bartering is also making a comeback in today’s digital age. A new startup has developed an app that promotes the exchange of goods and already claims around 100,000 members. Perhaps the only certainty is that money will keep changing — but not without raising new questions about security, privacy, and trust.
8. What do the underlined words “spell the end of” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Mark the effectiveness of.
B.Speed up the acceptance of.
C.Reduce the importance of.
D.Lead to the disappearance of.
9. What is Maria Gonzalez’s attitude to biometric payment systems
A.Supportive. B.Objective. C.Concerned. D.Unclear.
10. What is the function of the reference to the film In Time
A.To show a creative example of future currency.
B.To prove the unreliability of virtual currencies.
C.To criticize the viewpoint of trading life years.
D.To explain the superiority of time in the future.
11. What is the best title for the text
A.The Rise of Biometric Technology
B.The Diversity of Future Currencies
C.The Uncertainty of Payment Methods
D.The Unavailability of Traditional Money

San Francisco Bay is one of the busiest waterways in the US. Ferries, cargo ships and tankers cut through its choppy (波浪起伏的) waters every day. Unfortunately, they share the bay with an unexpected visitor: gray whales searching for food.
Last year, 21 dead gray whales were found in the Bay Area, with at least 40% killed by ship strikes. Scientists believe the real number is even higher, since many bodies sink before being found. At least 10 more have died in the Bay Area so far this year.
The problem is getting worse because climate change has fundamentally changed gray whale migration patterns and feeding behaviors, forcing many starving whales to travel into San Francisco Bay in search of food. This presents significant dangers to whales that were previously able to avoid such busy ocean areas. The choppy bay conditions often make whales nearly invisible to ship crews, creating dangerous situations where strikes become likely.
To solve this crisis, researchers have launched WhaleSpotter, an AI-powered detection network that scans the bay to track them day and night. Using cameras installed on islands and ships, the system spots whale blows and heat signatures up to 2 nautical miles (海里) away. Researchers say the system’s biggest advantage is constant monitoring. Unlike human observers, these cameras can operate through the night and in foggy conditions, which are common in the bay.
When a whale is detected, AI automatically flags the sighting, which is then confirmed by trained marine mammal observers before warnings are sent via radio to ship operators. This allows ships to slow down or change course when whales are nearby. “They’ll be able to make adjustments before they get anywhere close,” said Thomas Hall, director of operations for San Francisco Bay Ferry.
The network is the first to directly combine land-based and ship detection with official ship warnings. Scientists hope to add more cameras on the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, expanding coverage across the entire bay and creating safer waters for these endangered creatures.
12. What has led to gray whales entering San Francisco Bay
A.Fewer natural enemies in the bay.
B.The shortage of their original food sources.
C.Climate-caused changes in reproducing habits.
D.The abundance of food created by shipping activities.
13. Why are many gray whales killed by ship strikes in San Francisco Bay
A.No monitoring system existed before.
B.Marine mammal observers refuse to work at night.
C.Heavy traffic and poor visibility work together.
D.Climate change has worsened the foggy conditions.
14. What can we learn about WhaleSpotter
A.It replaces human observers.
B.It allows ships to react early.
C.It communicates directly with ship operators.
D.It covers the whole San Francisco Bay area.
15. What can be inferred about the future of gray whales in San Francisco Bay
A.Their chances of survival will likely increase.
B.They will grow rapidly in population.
C.Their living environment will improve.
D.They will no longer be threatened by ship strikes.

I had been building a small robot for the school science fair for three weeks. It was not beautiful, but it could pick up paper cups with two wooden arms. On Friday afternoon, during the final test in the lab, one wheel stopped turning. Mr Chen, my science teacher, checked it and said the motor (发动机) controller was burned.
“You can still join the fair if you replace this part by Monday,” he said.
I knew what that meant. The part cost twenty-eight dollars. I had twelve in a jar at home, saved from washing cars for neighbors. My mother had just paid for my little sister’s medicine, and I did not want to ask for more.
I walked to the bus stop in a light rain, thinking of the unfinished robot on the lab table. When I bent to tie my shoe, I noticed a brown wallet under the bench. Inside were a driver’s license, three fifty-dollar bills, and a small card with a phone number on it. The license belonged to Robert Grant, whose address was only two streets from my apartment.
For a moment, I felt the rain on my neck and the heavy coins in my pocket. With that money, my robot could move again. No one had seen me pick up the wallet. Then I remembered how Dad always said, “The quickest way is not always the right way.” I put the wallet into my backpack and got off the bus one stop early.
Mr Grant’s house was small. I knocked, but no one answered. Through the window I could see a walking stick near the sofa. I wrote a note with my phone number, pushed it under the door, and turned back toward home.
At home, I told Mom what had happened.

That evening, Mr Grant called to thank me.

At home, I told Mom what had happened. She listened carefully and praised me for choosing honesty instead of taking the money to fix my robot. She said true success never comes from dishonest gains. Though I felt upset about my broken robot, I knew I had made the right choice. We waited by the phone, hoping Mr Grant would receive the note and contact me soon.
That evening, Mr Grant called to thank me. He said he was worried about losing his wallet full of cash and important documents. Knowing my trouble with the robot part, he offered to buy the controller for me. I refused his money politely. Finally, he came to my house the next day to return the wallet and gave me a new motor as a gift. My robot worked perfectly and took part in the science fair successfully. I learned honesty is far more valuable than any prize.
