My wife Hannah and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots always ends up either over-watered or under-watered. But after I received bad news about my health, I began to want something green in our home to feel better.
At that time, my friend Mitch came to give me a plant called lucky bamboo. It stood straight in the pot. I fell in love with it at once and decided to take care of it. I put it by the window where sunlight could shine in. Every morning, I gave it a little water and gently cleaned its leaves.
For weeks, the bamboo thrived. Its leaves were soft and bright green and it grew taller and stronger every day. But gradually, thin yellow spots (斑点) began to spread along the edges of the leaves. I watered it more often and added special plant food, hoping it would be well soon. However, no matter what I did, the leaves stayed yellow. Each day, I stood quietly by the window for a long time, watching the weak plant, wondering if it and I would both be able to go through the difficulties.
One evening, Hannah noticed my silence. “You’ve cared for it with all your heart each day,” she said softly. “Sometimes growth takes time, and recovering (恢复) needs time too.”
Hearing her words, I was no longer worried. At that moment, the weak bamboo standing before me inspired me to keep moving forward, just as I was trying my best to help it recover.
I kept caring for it patiently. Slowly, new green leaves appeared. And the leaves danced gently in the wind. It seems to say that hope is returning slowly.

Are you standing in a long line for the school bus Are you waiting quietly for your friends on the playground Or are you trying to have fun during break time Why not try Masyu—an interesting paper and pen game to pass the time
________ In 1999, a creator named Ryou Yano designed a game played on squares (正方形), where you draw one long line to connect all white circles. Later, a man called Acetonitrile found that the game was too simple and repeated a lot. So he came up with an idea. If there are white circles, what about adding black ones with different rules A new game, with two creators, was born.
The rules are simple. In each square, there is a white circle, a black circle, or nothing. The goal is to draw a long and unbroken line to form a loop (闭环;圈) at last. The line passes through the center of each circle, but it never crosses itself or branches off. For example, the line mustn’t be like a number “8” or a letter “Y”. When the line passes through a black circle, it must turn 90 degrees inside the circle itself, and then must go straight through the next square. However, you won’t see a 90-degree turn inside a white circle. The line must go straight through the square with a white circle. Then, it must turn 90 degrees in the next square.
Masyu is a great way to relax, exercise your mind, and make waiting time fun. It doesn’t require high levels of knowledge or special talents. Anyone, anywhere in the world can enjoy it.
23. How does the writer lead into the topic
A. By telling stories. B. By showing facts.
C. By asking questions. D. By listing numbers.
24. Which of the following can be put in “_______”
A. Many famous people like playing Masyu.
B. Masyu is a popular game around the world.
C. Masyu has many levels to meet people’s needs.
D. Masyu has been greatly improved over the years.
25. Which picture is correct according to the passage
A. B. C. D.
26. What’s the main purpose of this passage
A. To describe the influence of Masyu. B. To show the best way to win Masyu.
C. To encourage more people to try Masyu. D. To introduce the development of Masyu.
D
On solar farms, there are many solar panels (太阳能板) standing in the sun. They need sunlight to make electricity. However, if grass grows too tall, it will stop sunlight from reaching the panels. Now many solar farms practise solar grazing by keeping sheep there. Sheep eat grass, walking safely between the panels without breaking anything.
Solar grazing has many benefits. First, it is friendly to the environment. In the past, people used gas-powered machines to cut the grass. But they were bad for the environment. When sheep come to eat grass, people do not need to use these machines any more. It saves gas and also reduces air pollution. Second, farmers save money on cutting grass and feeding sheep. At the same time, more money comes from selling sheep and other products. Besides, local schools and community groups can visit these farms and learn about green farming and energy. It also teaches young people to care for the environment.
Though solar grazing might seem like an easy win, there can be challenges. For one thing, the sheep stay quietly in one place around the panels, but they should move often to keep the grass under control. This means farmers need to move both the fences (篱笆) and the sheep from time to time. For another, sheep are easily attacked and harmed by animals like wolves, bears and lions. The fences are not strong enough to keep dangerous animals away. What’s more, some farms have poor-quality grass. It is not healthy for sheep, so they cannot grow strong or work well. That’s why not every solar farm is ready for sheep.
If people want to make full use of solar grazing, they may need to make changes. Some new companies are trying different high-tech tools to make it easier and faster to manage sheep on solar farms.
27. What is solar grazing
A. Protecting solar panels on solar farms. B. Reducing sunlight reaching solar panels.
C. Cutting grass with machines on solar farms. D. Raising sheep under solar panels on solar farms.
28. Which of the following are mentioned as the benefits of solar grazing
①Reduce air pollution. ②Bring more money to farmers.
③Give local schools green energy. ④Teach children to protect the environment.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
29. Why is it difficult to practise solar grazing
A. Sheep run everywhere on the farm. B. Dangerous animals come to hurt sheep.
C. The fences can be easily moved by sheep. D. Grass grows more slowly than sheep can eat it.
30. What will the writer most probably talk about next
A. How we use gas-powered machines to cut grass.
B. What kinds of animals we should keep on the solar farm.
C. What new technologies people should use in solar grazing.
D. How much money we can save by using sheep on a solar farm.
