A Stanford University-led study shows that in Costa Rica, even limited tree cover can reduce the
presence of invasive (入侵性的) mosquito species known to spread diseases.
Using field observations and satellite data on land cover for a patchwork of forests, farms, and
residential areas in southern Costa Rica, the researchers found the presence of the Aedes albopictus
mosquito, an invasive mosquito species, decreased in areas with more tree cover while the total number of
mosquito species increased. That’s because more species leads to more competition, making it harder for an
invasive species to find unoccupied space or resources. Also, more diverse environments are often more
stable and resilient (可迅速恢复的 ) to disturbance, making them more resistant to fast-spreading,
opportunistic invaders like Aedes albopictus.
Costa Rica has many mosquito-borne diseases and two invasive mosquito species serving as carriers.
The forests surveyed in the study hosted a high diversity of mosquito species, none of which were the
disease carrier Aedes albopictus. Residential areas, by contrast, had lower overall diversity and were far
more likely to attract the invasive, disease-spreading species. Agricultural areas fell somewhere in between,
with outcomes seemingly tied to the intensity and type of land use.
Natural habitats exist alongside agriculture and development in rural areas throughout the world. In
Costa Rica and beyond, these areas can provide pathways to conserving biodiversity. The study’s findings
offer a potential strategy: protecting trees can help conserve biodiversity while also reducing the likelihood
of disease transmission (传播). That is good news in the face of warmer temperatures, changes in rainfall,
and human activity that are enabling the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses to new places often unprepared
to deal with them.
The researchers emphasize the need to do more research to understand how other disease carriers
respond to increased tree cover and what factors beyond tree cover contribute to the spread of diseases. The
study stresses the continued importance of forest reserves. Still, researchers point out that planting trees
outside of forests should be viewed as a complement — not a replacement — to conserving larger
natural areas.

Imagine you are camping at night, and you are sitting inside a tent. You want to read a book, but it is
too dark. If you have a flashlight with you inside the tent and you hold your flashlight right up next to the
pages of the book, then you are really in business! Brachytherapy (近距离放射疗法), as internal radiation
therapy to treat cancer, is a little like this flashlight, because doctors deliver radiation right up close to
tumor (肿瘤) cells instead of treating them from farther away.
There are several ways healthcare providers can deliver brachytherapy treatments. In one type of
brachytherapy, healthcare providers can use a robot called an afterloader that controls where the radioactive
source is placed in the patient.
This robot can move the source through special tubes into the inside of a patient. When the treatment
is over, the robot removes the source from the patient. When the radiation source is not being used for
treatment, it sits inside a container inside the robot. That container is made of a special kind of heavy metal
so that it blocks radiation. The afterloader can be controlled from outside the treatment room, so the doctor
and other members of the healthcare team can be outside of the room while the source is outside of its
special container and is being used to treat the patient. This makes delivering radiation safer for the medical
team, because they are not exposed to radiation each time they treat a patient.
Brachytherapy can be used to treat lots of kinds of cancer. Sometimes patients even get more than one
kind of radiation treatment, like when they get treated from the outside-in and then from the inside-out.
When a person is going to be treated with brachytherapy, the patient’s doctor will work with a radiation
oncologist (肿瘤专家) to make sure the patient is treated safely. By tailoring brachytherapy treatments to
individual patients, it can enable doctors to significantly increase the curative effect while reducing side
effects to the minimum, enhancing both treatment effectiveness and the quality of life for patients.

Every morning at 5:30 am, a quiet movement unfolds on a Kerala riverbank. Led by one man, Saji
Valuvassery, this floating classroom is teaching people to swim — for free. More than a skill, it’s a lifeline,
a community spirit, and a powerful reminder that courage can be contagious (具有感染力的).
On a quiet February morning in 2009, a school picnic to the scenic spot near the Periyar River turned
into a disaster. A boat carrying 15 kids and their teacher overturned in the river, leaving no survivors. The
disaster shook Saji Valuvassery, a shop owner. Haunted (困扰) by the thought of the young lives lost, he
began offering swimming classes in the very river that had taken them, for free. Little did he know that this
simple gesture would turn the banks of the Periyar River into a place filled with laughter and community
warmth.
Saji began by teaching his own kids to swim, then their friends, and then a few kids from around the
neighbourhood. Word spread. More kids came. Then adults. Today, that small effort has become the
“Valasseril River Swimming Club”. Over 10,000 people have learned to swim here, and 2,000 children
have been trained to swim across 780 metres of the river — all in one go.
The swimming classes have also grown into a space for sharing knowledge and stories, where
everyone who learns is encouraged to give back, keeping the spirit of community flowing as constantly as
the river itself. “Once anyone passes their advanced swimming level, they are required to do 6 days of free
service, to ensure others’ safety,” explains Saji.
The Valasseril River Swimming Club teaches people from November to May. It pauses during the
monsoon season (季风季节 ) and reopens in November, when the river is calm and safe again. Every
November, when it restarts, volunteers return voluntarily, led by their shared sense of purpose. When asked

M: I hope we’ll be able to depart on time.
W: There are some repairs happening on the line just outside, so we might have to wait a bit
longer than usual.
M: How many stops do we have along the way
W: I think we have six.
M: That’s not too bad. Taking a train is still faster than going by bus.
W: Yeah! But next time I would like to fly home. It saves much time.
M: OK.
W:We still have an hour till departure. Do you want to eat something before we leave There is
a wonderful restaurant over there.
M: No, I’m fine. We had a heavy lunch!

W: Excuse me, is there a house for sale in this area I can’t see any “for sale” signs.
M: Let me think. The house next to the library is for sale. It has only just gone on the market,
so I don’t think they’ve had time to put up a sign yet.
W: That will be the one. The agent said it was new to the market. How do I get there
M: Your best bet is to drive to the end of this road and park your car in the museum parking lot.
It’s free to park there. Everywhere else you have to pay.
W: Right.
M: Then, at the side of the museum you’ll see a little path called Smugglers’ Walk. Follow that
to the end, then turn right. You’ll see the library straight ahead of you.

M: Mom, do you know anything about computers My screen has frozen. Do you have a
minute to help me fix it
W: You’re asking the wrong person. I’m not very good with technology, but I’ll have a look.
What’s the matter
M: I pressed the print button on the computer and now I can’t do anything. When I click the
mouse or try to move it, nothing happens. The printer’s been plugged in and seems to be working
OK. Can you check it out
W: Let me see. Oh, I see what you mean. Nothing moves at all.
M: I’m worried about losing my work if I turn it off. It has taken me over an hour to write my
essay and I was just about to print it out.
W: I think that is all you can do. It’s impossible to do anything else except to turn it off and
then back on again. If you were going to print out your essay, I bet you would have saved it first.
M: Yes, come to think of it, I think I did.

M: I love looking at the sky at night.
W:Me too. But I hate the fact that it makes me feel so small. I mean, I’m amazed by how many
stars there are out there.
M: I know. I’ve heard for the amount of sand in the world, there are 10 times more stars in the
universe.
W: Really Some people would think that’s scary.
M:Well, the number is just too hard to fully understand. Hey, see that star there
W: The one that is not really clear
M: That’s the one. You know, what we are seeing is not the exact look of the star right this
second.
W:What do you mean
M: I mean the star we’ re looking at is what it looked like years ago, because it takes time for
the light of the star to travel all the way to Earth and into our eyes. The light of some stars takes
thousands and thousands of years to travel across space. If an alien was staring at us through some
super-strong telescope from some distant planet, he might see Earth as it was millions of years ago.
W: Are you saying that they would see dinosaurs
M: Ha-ha! Possibly! Well, in theory anyway.
W: That’s blown my mind! Come on, it’s getting cold. Let’s go inside and drink tea.

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. Today I’d like to talk to you about our conservation plans for
this village. As you all know, we are lucky enough to live in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It
is our duty to preserve it for future generations. The first item on the agenda is the application by a
developer, which suggests building 40 new homes on the former factory site by the river. Mr.
Bartholomew will give his views on that and recommend how the village should respond when the
application is discussed. Secondly, we’ll hear a report from Amanda. She will give us a progress
report on the attempts to encourage new wildlife to go to the riverside area. Thirdly, Geoffrey will
update us on the water quality in the river. Of course, we pride ourselves on having some of the
cleanest water in the country, but this just doesn’t happen on its own. It takes a lot of monitoring and
testing to maintain a high standard. Finally, Christina will organize a discussion for 30 minutes or so
to get your ideas on the future direction the village should be taking. I’m sure you’ll all agree that,
while we want to preserve the past, we don’t want to be stuck in the past. I hope we’ll be able to
continue the meeting by 4:30 after a break.
