As evening falls, crowds begin gathering at Sensoryscape, a tourist site on the island resort of Sentosa in Singapore. With music filling the air, five AI-powered robot dogs dance to the rhythm. They wave, jump, and roll on the ground. After the performance, they interact and “chat” with visitors. Children excitedly run around them, while adults use their phones to capture photos and videos.
From April 18 to May 17, the Singapore Tourism Board and the Chinese travel platform Mafengwo jointly launched a pilot AI robot dog service at Sentosa Wildlife Reserve in Singapore. Addison Goh, divisional director of the Business and Experience Development Division at Sentosa Development Corporation, says, “The robot dogs are probably busier than I am,” adding that every day, they conduct guided tours, perform multiple dance shows, and check the grounds to interact with visitors.
More importantly, the robot dogs are powered by AI models. Visitors can not only ask them for directions, but also receive personalized recommendations. Families may be guided to family-friendly restaurants, while younger visitors are offered suggestions for photography attractions and social media-worthy spots.
The Singapore Tourism Board describes the pilot project as “an exciting step toward reimagining visitor experiences through technology and innovation”. In recent years, Singapore has been actively promoting its “Smart Nation” initiative, and the tourism sector has become a major testing ground for AI applications. Unlike traditional smart tourism solutions that focus mainly on online bookings, digital payments or backend data management, these AI robot dogs emphasize the interactive experience of AI in real-world settings.
From China to Singapore, these robot dogs are bringing the warmth of technology to visitors from around the world. Rather than just cold machines or lines of code, they are gradually becoming companions that tourists can touch, communicate with, and even share part of their journeys with.

From its frozen surface, Antarctica seems like a place unsuited for life. But just offshore, the depths of the Southern Ocean tell a different story. Hundreds of feet below the surface, there are ice fish guarding their eggs and strange-looking crabs crawling among colorful sea stars. “It blows your mind,” says marine biologist Cristian Lagger. “At the bottom of the sea, Antarctica is a rich continent with many species, colors, and shapes.”
During a recent exploration, Lagger looked into those depths from the control room of the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research ship, Falkor, as live video from its remotely operated vehicle, SuBastian, streamed on a monitor. His research team had reached a previously undocumented place on the ocean floor, where SuBastian explored a gently sloped area from a depth of more than 3,000 feet to about 1,000 feet. Lagger and his colleagues felt like astronauts exploring a new frontier.
The Southern Ocean plays an outsized role in the health of our planet by absorbing more human-caused carbon dioxide than any other ocean and balancing the climate through its currents and seasonal ice. But as a recent study notes, current carbon sink (碳汇) estimates are limited because “harsh conditions there make collecting good data difficult.” So, little of the seabed has been studied and much remains unknown. By exploring its deep reaches, Lagger and his team hope to discover new species and update carbon storage estimates.
Lagger believes data from this expedition will strengthen the case for designating more marine protected areas around Antarctica. “It is not only about preserving unique and largely untouched ecosystems,” he explains, “but about safeguarding…the health of the Southern Ocean and its role in Earth’s systems.” As he points out: “What happens at the frozen edge now will not just stay there.”

If you’re the parent of a child or teenager, chances are you’ve heard of social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, or his wildly influential book, The Anxious Generation. In sum, the book argues that the rise of smartphones and social media has “rewired” the brains of young people, leading to a mental health crisis. The book has undeniably had a significant impact. Many states in the U.S. are limiting the use of phones in schools by law.
Haidt’s latest work, The Amazing Generation, is a self-described “guide”. The first section of the book gives background information about everything from the rise of different kinds of media to explanations of “the attention economy”. This section also includes lots of alarming visuals, including one of my favorites, “Screen Time Calculator That You Can Use to Freak People Out.” “1 hour per day = 15 full days per year. 2 hours per day = 1 full month per year. Etc.” This is a page I wouldn’t mind seeing hung on classroom walls, including the college classrooms where I teach.
The second part of the book is a novel tracking the lives of six young people, their relationships to themselves and one another, and the various technologies that impact those interactions. It’s hard not to feel familiar when you read the part where heavy social media user Alex finally agrees to join his phoneless friend Jax at the skate park. We see Jax trying out different skating moves in the background, and by the end, falling onto the ground after another heroic attempt. Meanwhile, Alex has been scrolling his screen, first searching for skating tips, then watching world championship skating highlights.
What seems especially fascinating about The Amazing Generation is that it can get young people thinking more critically about the products that shape their everyday lives. The message of the book is very straightforward, and it feels like an important antidote to the daily pull and messaging of the online world.
