Every year, around 320 million books end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场), resulting in serious waste of resources. To deal with the problem, the Bridge of Books Foundation has been sending such books to the disadvantaged young people. Set up in California in 2000, the Foundation aims high: bring the world and all its possibilities to children through books.
In 2003, Abby Daly, a former lawyer with a focus on children’s rights, worked for the New Jersey branch of the organization. Even though the California branch closed in 2004, the New Jersey program has kept growing under Daly’s management. Up to now, the Foundation has delivered more than 1.5 million books to 600,000 needy children across New Jersey’s 21 counties.
Starting in her own home, Daly never expected the organization to develop into what it is today. What began as a personal project carried out in her busy life as a stay-at-home mother has developed into a smoothly running organization, supported by a growing number of donors and receivers.
Even after over 20 years, the target has stayed the same. Daly believes that even with all the new technology, physical books are just as important as ever. Now, the Foundation receives hundreds of requests across the state every day, and some donors even travel for hours to deliver books. As Daly puts it, “I don’t think that this is a task that will be completed because kids are in constant need of books. And that you get books to them this week doesn’t mean they don’t need books two weeks later.”
Though the Foundation has made remarkable achievements, Daly remains concerned about the big picture, including low literacy (识字) rates and limited book access among poor kids. She sincerely thanks all those who have supported the cause and says confidently that every child deserves (应得) to have books of their own.

Rockhopper penguins are famous for their jumps over rocky cliffs (峭壁) and one-of-a-kind look across sub-Antarctic regions. At one time, these lovely yet tough creatures gathered in huge groups all over the Falkland Islands. Once numbering in the millions around the world, their total count has fallen by more than half during the past 100 years. Many biologists and environmental researchers warn that they will face an increasing risk of extinction if stronger and more effective protection measures are not carried out right away.
Climate change stands as the biggest threat to rockhopper penguins’ survival. Rising ocean temperatures have greatly reduced the population of krill and small fish, which are their major food sources. Adult penguins thus struggle to get enough food to feed both themselves and their newly-born chicks. Apart from food shortage, more frequent and strong storms often blow away their homes on rocks and slaughter their young chicks. What’s worse, human activities such as overfishing have further ruined their natural living environment.
To save these lively jumpers from danger, researchers and local volunteers have organized a series of practical protection projects. They equip penguins with GPS trackers to record their daily feeding routes and study how changing sea conditions impact their whole life cycle. On Sea Lion Island, workers build stone homes that can stand storms for the penguins and place decoy (诱饵) birds to attract species the penguins feed on. On New Island, people remove sheep and plant native tussac grass, creating safer and more comfortable mating grounds.
These efforts have produced some encouraging results and as more people are joining in the protection work, we have good reason to believe that future generations will still get a chance to see these lovely animals in their natural home.

Imagine you’d like a pair of robotic arms fixed in your home simply to do one thing: fold clothes. How would it learn to do that You could start by writing rules. Check the clothes to figure out how much force they can stand before being torn. Locate a shirt’s collar. Move the robotic hands to the left sleeve, lift it, and fold it inward by exactly the same distance. Repeat for the right sleeve. If the sleeve is twisted (变形), correct it. Very quickly the number of rules increases, but a complete accounting of them could produce dependable results. This was the original technology of robotics: expecting every possibility and programming it in advance.
Around 2015, the most advanced robots started to do things differently: A digital simulation (模拟) of the robotic arms and the clothes was built, and the program received a reward signal every time it folded a piece of clothing successfully. This way, it got better by trying all sorts of techniques, with millions of repetitions — the same way AI gets good at playing games.
Then the arrival of ChatGPT drove the further development in this field. Trained on large amounts of text, large language models (LLMs) worked not through repetitions and corrections, but by learning to guess what word should come next in a sentence. Similar models adapted to robotics were soon able to understand pictures, sensor readings, and the position of a robot’s joints and guess the next action the machine should take, sending dozens of motor commands (指令) every second.
This change seems to work, whether the robot is supposed to talk to people, move through a space, or even do difficult tasks. And it is paired with other ideas about how to achieve this new way of learning, even if they aren’t yet perfect, so they can learn from the environment they’re meant to work in.
