In 2025, Guangxi faced a serious drought. No one in Guangxi ever imagined facing such a terrible drought. It
changed our green, rainy home into a dry and dead place. From the beginning of November 2024 to May 2025, there was
hardly any heavy rain here. Only light rain fell on the ground sometimes. This was the lowest since (自从) 1961.
Why did this happen A weather event called La Ni a sent strong winds from the north over Guangxi. Also, the
high-pressure system kept wet air away, so it was hotter and less rainy.
The unusual drought affected people’s drinking water and crops. Thousands of people didn’t have enough water to
drink, and large areas of crops were dying. Many cities like Nanning and Guilin, along with lots of counties (县 ), had
drought problems. In Guigang, some small water pools even had no water left.
The government spared no effort to help. They dug many new wells (井) for water and did cloud seeding (人工降雨)
many times. The government used a large amount of money to solve the problems, such as rebuilding farms, buying water
tools and sending water. These made sure people had enough water until the rainy season came. In June, it rained a lot, and
the land turned green again.
Guangxi’s drought tells a truth: Nature is like a magic box full of surprises. Just when we think we understand it well
enough, it suddenly shows us something we didn’t expect. It reminds us that no matter how much we study and prepare,
nature always has its own rules and ways of working.
56. How long did the drought in Guangxi last
A. For 3 months. B. For 6 months. C. For 7 months.

A. No pains, no gains. Success needs great ______ .
B. Many ______ love to travel around the world.
C. She looks at that strange box with ______ , and wonders what’s in it.
58. Which way did the government NOT use to fight against the drought
A. Doing cloud seeding. B. Buying water tools. C. Building more houses.
59. According to the article, which fact is TRUE
A. Guangxi has never met drought before.
B. People in Guangxi had to dig wells by themselves to get drinking water.
C. Even though we study hard and get ready well, nature can still give us surprises.
60. What is the best title for the text
A. A Story of La Ni a in Guangxi. B. A Drought in Guangxi. C. The Rainy Season in Guangxi.

Meditation (冥想) is a quiet exercise for your mind. It began thousands of years ago in countries like India. Today,
people from all over the world practise it to feel calm. You need no special tools, just a quiet place and a few minutes.
For middle school students, meditation brings great benefits. School life can feel stressful with homework, tests, and
busy daily routines. Meditation helps students improve focus in class. It also helps students sleep better, feel less stressful,
and deal with emotions like anger or sadness more calmly after doing it. It also helps them be more patient and confident.
How to start First, sit comfortably on a chair or the floor. Keep your back straight. Close your eyes. Breathe in slowly
through your nose, then out slowly through your mouth. Count each breath from one to ten. If your mind jumps to
homework, a friend, or lunch, that’s okay—just return to counting. Try five minutes daily. It works well in the morning or
before bed.
In Chengdu, some schools start practising simple meditation. Before class begins, students do a three-minute breathing
exercise together. Some schools created “Peace Corners” with mats in classrooms or libraries. Students go to these places to
relax when needed. These help students feel calmer and focus better. One student shared, “After breathing quietly, I feel
ready for maths class!”
Try meditation today! It is free, easy, and good for your mind and heart. Start small—even two minutes helps. With
practice, you may feel more peaceful and stronger inside. Start your journey to a calmer mind now!

B. 任务型阅读。根据短文内容,按要求回答问题。(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,计 10 分)
There is a special "line" in China—the Qinling-Huaihe Line. It runs from the
Qinling Mountains in the west to the Huaihe River in the east. It divides (划分) China
into two parts: the northern part, known as northern China, and the southern part,
known as southern China. There are great differences in weather between the two parts.
Let's have a look!
In general, northern China has a cold and dry winter, while southern China is known for its cold, humid (潮湿的 )
weather in winter. In northern China, the coldest month often comes in January. Temperatures in some provinces can drop
to as low as -30 ℃, while the southern most cities enjoy temperatures of around 20 ℃ even in January. Many northern
Chinese like spending winter holidays in the southern cities, mostly around Sanya.
During the winter months, the northern provinces experience cold weather for a long time. The ground freezes. Some
places are covered with snow. It's like a fairy-tale world from movies. People often make snowmen and have snowball
fights to enjoy the happiness of winter. But in southern China, temperature seldom falls below 0 ℃. Snow seldom falls, and
the rivers do not freeze.
Heating is important for northern Chinese. People often wear hats, scarves, down jackets and gloves outside. But
when they return home, they only need a T-shirt. In southern China, however, people don't enjoy heating. They often use air
conditioners or electric heaters (空调或者电暖气) to keep themselves warm during winter..
