Li Wei, a 24-year-old college graduate, gave up a well-paid job in a big city and returned to his poor mountain village in the west of China three years ago.
When he was a child, the village was very quiet and poor. Most young people left to work in cities, leaving behind the elderly and young children. The roads were narrow and hard to walk on. There were no modern supermarkets or clean public toilets. Many good farm products, such as fresh vegetables and wild honey, could not be sold to other places because of the bad traffic.
Li Wei wanted to change his hometown. With the help of the local government’s rural revitalization (乡村振兴) policy, he started an online store to sell local farm products. He learned to take photos and make short videos to introduce the clean mountains, clear water and delicious food of his village. At first, few people bought his products. But he never gave up. He kept improving his videos and services.
Slowly, more and more people knew about the lovely village and its healthy products. His online business became successful. He also helped build new roads and clean public areas in the village. Now, more young people come back to start their own businesses. The village is no longer poor and quiet. It is full of life and hope.
“I love my hometown. It’s meaningful to build a better home with my own hands,” Li Wei said. “I hope more young people will join us and make our countryside more beautiful.”
4. Why did Li Wei return to his hometown

D.Because his family asked him to come back.
5. What was the village like when Li Wei was young
A.It had wide clean roads.
B.It was rich and lively.
C.Many young people lived there.
D.It was poor and short of young people.
6. What can we infer from the passage
A.Li Wei’s business was easy to succeed at first.
B.The local government supported Li Wei’s idea.

D.The village is still the same as before.
7. What is the main idea of the passage
A.Li Wei built a successful online shop.
B.Many young people left the poor village.
C.A young man helped his hometown develop.
D.The village has clean mountains and clear water.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that most adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week, while you don’t need to exercise every day to be healthy. Exercising at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense activity at the weekend seems to have similar health benefits as spreading it out throughout the week.
To investigate whether it makes a difference when people exercise, Zhi-Hao Li at Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, and his teammates analyzed data in the UK Biobank study on the physical activity of more than 93,000 people, aged between 37 and 73. This was recorded by wrist accelerometers (加速度计), worn between 2013 and 2015. Most previous studies have relied on surveys, which can be unreliable.
Over eight years of follow-up, nearly 4,000 of the participants died. The researchers found that among people who did at least 150 minutes of weekly physical activity but packed it into one or two days, the risk of death from all causes was 32 percent lower than it was for people who didn’t manage this level of exercise. The risk of death from heart disease was 31 percent lower, and from cancer was 21 percent lower.
This might make it seem that exercising at the weekend is better than spreading out your physical activity, but there was no statistically significant difference in the risk of death between the “weekend warriors”, who fit their weekly physical activity into just one or two days, and those who were active more regularly. “This study adds to what we know about the ‘right’ way to be active. That is, there is no single ‘right’ way,” says I-Min Lee at Harvard Medical School. “Whether one is regularly active, or whether one bunches activity over only one to two days a week, it is equally beneficial.”
All the participants lived in the UK and about 97 percent were white, so the researchers write that additional studies that include a wider range of ethnicities are required to make them more applicable to general populations.
8. Why did the researchers analyze data from the UK Biobank
A.To acquire abundant samples.
B.To make the result more convincing.
C.To follow up participants easily.
D.To compare it with previous surveys.
9. What did Zhi-Hao Li and his team find
A.Daily exercise is a must for good health.
B.Weekend warriors face higher death risks.
C.Spreading out exercise is better than weekend exercise.
D.Weekend exercise and daily workouts are equally beneficial.
10. Which of the following may I-Min Lee agree with
A.Skip weekday exercise completely.
B.Choose moderate activities as priority.
C.Pick an exercise pattern that suits you.
D.Get in a fixed amount of workout at weekends.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly focus on about the study
A.Its future direction for improvement.
B.Its potential application fields.
C.Its limitation on research methods.
D.Its far-reaching significance.

Science fiction stories about machines “stealing” our jobs may soon become reality. However, if history is any indication, technological progress will create more jobs in different fields. The real question is not whether a machine will take your job, but whether you will rise to the challenge of learning to stay relevant. When you become a lifelong learner, you claim the power to face the future of work successfully.
What does it mean to be a lifelong learner It is a cycle of “learn, unlearn, and relearn”. Learning something you are actually interested in is always enjoyable. Unlearning, however, is quite different. It means challenging and removing old ideas, beliefs, and assumptions so that new ones can grow. There are many metaphors for unlearning, for example: removing old paint before putting on a fresh coat. When a professor delivers a keynote speech online for the first time, he steps out of his comfort zone, unlearns “old ways” of doing things, and relearns the skill of working from home.
Lifelong learning is more important now than ever. The labor market has changed considerably in the past decade. According to a recent report, companies’ adoption of automation will transform tasks, jobs, and skills. Over the next five to ten years, employers will divide work between humans and machines roughly equally. Nearly half of workers will need to retrain their core skills.
Companies now hire based on skills rather than official qualifications. Self-management skills like active learning, toughness, and problem-solving skills are growing in importance.
Mastering one skill is not enough. To stay relevant, you must make learning new skills an ongoing habit. Personal development strengthens your mind and creates higher levels of self-confidence. Professional development boosts your value in the workplace. Both are essential for surviving in a rapidly changing world.
As machines get smarter, human workers must do the same. Lifelong learners invent and reinvent themselves whenever they find or create the opportunity. This is not about job-switching — it is about ensuring you remain a valuable person, whether in your current job or a new one.
12. What is the main challenge in the era of hi-tech progress
A.Finding new jobs.
B.Competing with machines.
C.Keeping skills relevant.
D.Acquiring official qualifications.
13. What is the author’s attitude towards “unlearning” in paragraph 2
A.Supportive. B.Dismissive. C.Concerned. D.Indifferent.
14. What is suggested for workers according to paragraph 3
A.Taking the place of machines.
B.Improving their core techniques.
C.Switching to different industries.
D.Applying for more job opportunities.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To encourage lifelong learning.
B.To recommend skill courses.
C.To warn of the dangers of automation.
D.To compare learning methods.

I still remember the cold winter morning when I was waiting for the bus at the stop near my community. The wind was howling, and the snowflakes were dancing wildly in the air. I wrapped my scarf tightly around my neck, stamping my feet to keep warm, my eyes fixed on the road, hoping the bus would come soon.
Just then, I noticed an old man sitting on the bench beside the stop. He was wearing a worn-out coat, his hands trembling as he held a tattered cardboard sign that read: “Homeless, please help with any food or money.” Passers-by hurried past, most of them casting a quick glance and then looking away, as if he were invisible. Some even quickened their steps, afraid to make eye contact with him.
I felt a pang of sympathy in my heart. I reached into my pocket, where I had just taken out 50 yuan from the ATM to buy my favorite breakfast and a new notebook for school. I hesitated for a moment. If I gave the money to him, I would have to go without my breakfast and the notebook. But as I looked at his pale, cold face and his empty stomach, my hesitation faded. I walked over to him, handed him the 50 yuan, and said softly, “Sir, please buy something warm to eat.”
The old man looked up at me, his eyes filled with surprise and gratitude. He opened his mouth to say something, but no words came out. He just nodded repeatedly, tears rolling down his weathered cheeks. I smiled at him and turned back to wait for the bus, feeling a warm glow in my heart, even though the wind was still blowing fiercely.
The bus finally arrived, and I got on. As the bus pulled away, I looked back and saw the old man standing up, waving at me, the 50 yuan clutched tightly in his hand. I thought that was the end of the story, but I never expected what would happen a week later...

Voluntary Service in Community
Last weekend, our school organized a voluntary service activity in nearby communities.
Students divided into several groups. Some cleaned public paths and picked rubbish; others visited elderly residents, chatting with them and helping do housework. Several students also handed out leaflets about environmental protection.
This activity meant a lot. It taught us the importance of caring for others. Meanwhile, we gained valuable social experience and realized small efforts can bring warmth to people around us.

Paragraph 1:
A week later, I was waiting at the same bus stop after school when I saw the familiar figure again. It was the old man I had helped before. He spotted me immediately and walked over quickly, carrying a cloth bag in his hands. He thanked me sincerely for the money I gave him that cold morning. He told me he had found a temporary job and earned some money, so he came specially to repay my kindness. He insisted that I take the bag filled with snacks and a brand-new notebook. I tried to refuse, but he refused to take the bag back.
Paragraph 2:
When I reached home, I opened the bag and was completely shocked. Inside were delicious homemade pastries and the exact same notebook I had planned to buy that day. A small note was tucked inside, saying kindness never goes unnoticed. I suddenly understood that a little warmth I offered had circled back to me. This experience made me determined to keep passing kindness to every person in need I meet in daily life.
