On the first day of school this year, Joseph Riley, the principal of Pocahontas County High School in West Virginia, dropped by the band classroom and told the 38 students that the school had been unable to find a band teacher after the former teacher left over the summer to take a teaching position at a different school.
“I said that we’d have to get them into other classes,” Riley said. Then he gave the students a second option. If the teens wanted to keep the Warriors band going and teach themselves, the school would support them. Most students decided to take a different class, but ten students took him up on the offer. The guys didn’t give up in the face of adversity and they found the courage to keep the band going.
The ten band members elected Hailey Fitzgerald, 17, as band director, and then invited two teachers from the school to serve as advisors. Math teacher Jennifer Nail-Cook agreed to offer support. “They’re an ensemble (合奏团队) together,” Fitzgerald said. “They also had to solve a problem when they realized they had too many drummers.” The band’s latest performance was at their school’s Homecoming Day. “When we do our school song, that’s probably everybody’s favorite,” said Jadyn Lane, 17. “To see so many people supporting and cheering us on, that’s a huge motivator.”
Several school alumni (校友) volunteered to join the students in the stands on Homecoming Day. “Our school is the heart of the community,” Riley said. “Everyone is really appreciative of these kids working together to make sure our school still has a band. It’s incredible to witness the progress they’ve made on their own.”
Years from now, Fitzgerald said she imagines she’ll look back on her junior year as band director with pride. “It was never an option for us to quit — we all love it too much,” she said.

With cities growing faster than ever, more and more neglected (被忽视的) urban spaces are cropping up all around the world. Dealing with the increase in these neglected spaces poses a serious problem for virtually every major city, but could art be the answer to this urban problem
Valero Square, centrally located in Jerusalem’s downtown near a busy light rail station and a major open-air market, should have been a lively community area. Instead, it fell into neglect due to a lack of people-focused programming, becoming a wasted space that thousands passed by daily without a second thought. That was, until the introduction of the Warde installation, which is part of a greater plan to revitalise the neglected urban spaces in Jerusalem’s city centre.
The installation features giant red “flowers” which can open and close in reaction to passers-by. Standing under one of the flowers will cause it to open and stay open until you leave, providing shade (阴凉) and relief from the hot summer sun. At night-time, it functions as lighting, providing a spotlight while open and a warm, soft light while closed. The installation is also programmed to react to public transportation, springing to life as the light rail vehicles arrive and leave the square, warming travellers not to miss their ride.
Art installations can be powerful in changing the attitudes and behavior of people in cities. In the case of Valero Square, the installation has invited people not only to engage with it actively but to notice a previously neglected site. However this type of interactive installation is not free from problems. Over time, the novelty can wear off and the behavior of passers-by can return to normal.
While It’s too early to say if Valero Square has been revived. Warde is an excellent example of how urban art installations can be a great tool for engaging communities with neglected spaces and getting people to stop and take notice of their surroundings.

Teenagers today have more buying power than ever. In fact, young people are influencing where the family budget goes more and more. But what influences young people when it comes to making those spending decisions
One of the most important factors is peer pressure. Many young people say that they often feel pressured to conform to their friends’ opinions and expectations. When a classmate brings a new gadget (小设备) to school and people remark on how “cool” it is (or not), it strengthens (or challenges) their membership of a group.
And it seems that peer pressure may be taking on new forms with the development of social media. Suddenly, rather than a dozen friends at school saying what the latest trend (趋势) is, there’s a whole world of teenagers online telling you what you should or shouldn’t be buying. This often adds to a feeling of FOMO (fear of missing out), which is when you worry that exciting things are happening that you are not a part of.
On top of that, many teens are being paid by brands to promote their products online. Businesses know that the most powerful influence over teenagers is other teenagers. And rather than traditional advertisements, which are clearly trying to sell a product, promotion from social media celebrities is made to look real. We watch a young person who we admire talking about going to a certain cinema chain with her friends. That weekend, we go to the same cinema chain in our own town, without thinking about the fact that she might have been paid to talk about that particular brand. So how can you resist such peer pressure One strategy is to focus on a long-term goal which you need to save for. If your money is put away for a great holiday next summer, you shouldn’t spend it on something you don’t really need or want right now.
