Zhang Jianguo, a 68-year-old farmer from a small village in Gansu Province, has devoted more than 30 years to transforming barren land into a green oasis(绿洲)in the desert area. His remarkable achievement is the result of years of hard work, persistence, and a deep love for nature.
In the early 1990s, Zhang witnessed the worsening desertification(荒漠化)around his village. Sandstorms frequently hit the area, destroying crops and making daily life extremely difficult. Determined to change this situation, Zhang decided to plant trees on the deserted land, despite being laughed at by many villagers who thought it was impossible. He started with a small piece of land, carrying water from a distant well to water the young seedlings. Every day, he walked miles under the burning sun, and his hands became rough from digging holes and planting trees.
In 2005, Zhang’s wife passed away, leaving him heartbroken. Yet he did not give up. Instead, he turned his grief into motivation and continued his work. Over the years, with the help of his two sons and some volunteers, he planted over 150,000 trees, covering an area of nearly 200 hectares. Today, the once barren land is now filled with green trees, attracting birds and other wildlife.
Now in his late sixties, Zhang has gradually passed his mission to his eldest son, Zhang Qiang. Having grown up watching his father’s dedication, Zhang Qiang has taken over the responsibility with great enthusiasm. He has also introduced new technologies to improve the survival rate of the trees.
