Jiayuguan—A Great Fortress on Hexi Corridor
The Hexi Corridor (河西走廊) was an important route of the ancient Silk Road. It connected inland China with Central Asia. However, most parts of the corridor were wide and flat. The enemies could move across the land quickly with little difficulty. For this reason, ancient Chinese people needed a strong defense (防御) point.
A famous general (将军) of the Ming Dynasty, Feng Sheng, discovered a perfect site. He found a narrow gap (缺口) between two big mountains. This gap was just 15 kilometers wide. To the north was a huge desert. To the south were high mountains. If enemies wanted to avoid this gap, they had to travel across 70 kilometers of dry desert. Such a long desert journey was full of great risks. Then Feng Sheng made up his mind to build a huge fortress (堡垒) right here, and people named it Jiayuguan.
The fortress was smartly designed. It had two walls around the whole fortress. Even if enemies broke the first wall successfully, they would meet the second thick wall at once. This gave the soldiers more time to fight back. What’s more, there was a special area called a wengcheng. Once enemies stepped into it, they would be trapped inside the fortress. Every design of Jiayuguan helped to protect the nation. Up to now, tourists from all over the world can visit the old fortress and feel its powerful defensive functions.
30. Why was the Hexi Corridor thought as a poor defense point
A.It had no rivers nearby. B.It was far from the capital.
C.It was wide and flat in most areas. D.It was full of high mountains.
31. What would happen if enemies tried to go around Jiayuguan
A.They would meet Ming soldiers.
B.They could cross mountains easily.
C.They could break through two walls quickly.
D.They had to pass a dangerous 70-kilometer desert.
32. What is the use of the two walls around Jiayuguan
A.To hold lots of visitors. B.To store food and water.
C.To make the fortress look taller. D.To give defenders more time to fight.
33. How does the writer feel about the design of Jiayuguan
A.He is disappointed at many walls as a weak strategy.
B.He is proud of its clever and effective defensive structure.
C.He is uncertain whether the fortress could actually trap enemies.
D.He is indifferent, focusing only on the historical background of the place.
34. How did the writer develop the whole passage
A.Describe mountains first→talk about deserts→introduce Ming history.
B.Show modern tourism→explain old wars→introduce General Feng Sheng.
C.Introduce problem→tell the building of Jiayuguan→explain its smart design.
D.Talk about the Silk Road→introduce other fortresses→praise ancient soldiers.

“It’s just too funny, hahaha...”, and just like this, three hours pass before you realize you do nothing! Some experts say we’ll become stupid if we don’t put phones down. Studies show more people spend nearly all their waking hours watching short videos.
Why is it hard to say no to short videos Algorithmic recommendation (算法推荐) must be the answer. It’s smart enough to uncover what we like and provide similar content continually. The more we like something, the more similar content we get.
Then why do short videos make us stupid First, they narrow our field of perception (认知范围). When watching similar videos, we may think we’re more knowledgeable, but we’re actually in an “information cocoon (信息茧房)” by sticking to subjects they are interested in. Just check your mother’s phone, and you’ll find you live in totally different worlds! Second, we’ll lose patience for reading and thinking, as we’re used to (习惯) this low-cost, high-return entertainment. Third, we’ll become over-emotional. We may easily believe negative (消极的) video stories and comment quickly, but often regret it when knowing the truth.
See, you become stupid little by little without realizing it. Maybe it’s time to wake up—you need a better way to entertain yourself!
35. Why does the writer use the mark “!” in the first sentence in Paragraph 1
A.To show people’s interest in short videos.
B.To show people’s worry about the internet.
C.To show people’s regret about wasting time.
D.To show people’s doubt about cellphone use.
36. What does the underlined word “narrow” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Mix. B.Limit. C.Predict. D.Increase.
37. What’s the writer’s purpose by mentioning “your mother’s phone”
A.To introduce how popular short videos are.
B.To suggest we should share the information.
C.To explain the theory of “information cocoon”.
D.To prove we know nothing about our mother's life.
38. Why do short videos make us stupid
①They may cause us to be impatient. ②They can make us over-emotional.
③They know what we are interested in. ④They can narrow our field of perception.
A.①②④ B.②③④ C.①③④ D.①②③
39. Which would be the best title for the text
A.Time to Put Your Phone Down B.You Are Going to Be Clever
C.A Better Way to Relax Yourself D.The Sharp Rise of Short Videos

An old man called Santiago looked very old. He had deep wrinkles (皱纹) on his neck and old scars (疤) on his hands from years of fishing. The strong sun made his skin dark brown. However, his eyes were always bright and confident, just like the color of the sea.
Santiago fished alone on the sea. During the first forty days, a boy was with him. Santiago didn’t get a fish for many days. So the boy’s parents thought the old man brought bad luck. They made the boy leave and work on another boat. Luckily, the new boat caught three good fish in the first week.
The boy was kind and felt sorry for the old man. He often came to help the old man carry his fishing tools when the old man returned with an empty boat every day.
One day, the boy told Santiago he wanted to fish with him again. But Santiago refused (拒绝). He hoped the boy could stay on the lucky boat. The boy said he didn’t want to leave before, and he left just because of his father’s order.
The old man understood him well. The boy’s father lost faith (信任) in Santiago, but the old man and the boy still believed in themselves. In the end, the boy invited the old man to have a beer and go home together, just like two close fishermen. They were cheerful and full of confidence.
