【原文】M: Hi, everyone. I’m a weather forecaster, which means I study what happens in the atmosphere and the weather conditions that occur on Earth. People are always surprised to learn that forecasters aren’t just involved in weather reporting on TV, but they could also work at a radio station, too.
I often get asked how I got interested in weather. Believe it or not, as a teenager, I became nervous of thunderstorms, and I’d often check the forecasts to see if any were coming. From there, my interest developed.
If you are thinking of going into weather forecasting, there are some important skills you’ll need. You have to be good at science, of course. The essential thing is having the ability to make sense of patterns. You won’t go too far wrong with that. Another useful skill is being able to translate a forecast into something people at home can understand. In recent days, Chinese agricultural technician Yang Xiugang has been receiving messages from Muhammad Usman, one of his trainees in Nigeria, asking for farming advice. Over the past few years, Yang has been devoted to helping farmers like Usman.
Born in Cengong county in Southwest China’s Guizhou province, Yang started to learn hybrid rice production techniques in 1998, when the manager of the county’s seed company came to his town to develop the industry. After mastering the skills, he was hired by the company as a technician. Recommended by his employer, Yang set out on an African-aid program to share agricultural technology abroad and has worked in several countries over the past decade.
Yang has been based in Jigawa State, Nigeria, since 2021. “The climate there is completely different from that in China. Temperatures swing sharply between day and night. Seedlings (幼苗) grow very fast-producing a new leaf every three days, compared with four or five days in Cengong,” he says, “so local varieties tended to collapse across large areas during wind and rain. Coupled with weak management, fields often had more weeds than rice, so yields were naturally low.”
Faced with these challenges, Yang set aside his experience in China and started from the very beginning to understand the local planting cycle. He spent long days in the fields, observing rice growth and recording temperature and seedling development. After more than two years of research, he finally developed hybrid rice varieties adapted to local conditions. From that day onwards, Bob and Milo became the best of friends. Milo followed Bob wherever he went. When Bob went to school, Milo would diligently wait outside the classroom till the classes ended. Then he would follow Bob to the forest to accompany him while he gathered firewood. He then took Milo to the hills, where he taught him how to play fetch. He even played with Milo with a ball. At night, Milo cosied up next to Bob on his tiny bed, and they both snored through the night and dreamt sweet dreams.
On one particular day, Milo was sick. He was unable to follow Bob, so he stayed at home. That day it rained heavily, and the roads everywhere turned slippery. On his way home, Bob was trying to reach home as soon as possible as he dreamt of a warm bowl of porridge waiting for him and Milo waiting to cosy up to him and keep him warm. Unfortunately, Bob missed seeing a hole at the side of the road and fell down the hole!
