The grammar school boy from Stratford-Upon-Avon has made headlines again after a groundbreaking study showed that Shakespeare does benefit children’s literacy and emotional development, but only if they can act him out.
The study found that a drama-based approach to teaching Shakespeare broadened children’s vocabulary, improved the quality of their writing, and improved their emotional understanding. “The way actors work makes a big difference to how children use language and how they think about themselves,” said Jacqui O’Hanlon, lead researcher of the study.
The study involved hundreds of Year 5 pupils (aged nine and ten) from 45 state primary schools. They were divided into a target group and a control group. Both groups were asked to read a passage from Romeo and Juliet and write a letter as Romeo after being apart from Juliet. The only difference was that the target group first took part in a 30-minute drama-based activity, while the control group did not.
It was shown that pupils in the target group drew on a wider vocabulary, used more complicated or rarer words, and wrote at greater length. They also appeared more comfortable writing in role. While pupils in the control group imagined how they themselves would react to being separated from a loved one, children in the target group put themselves in Romeo’s shoes and expressed that character’s emotion.
O’Hanlon said she had been most surprised by the emotional understanding shown in the children’s writing, and that they expressed deeper empathy and expressed emotions more vividly. “It is probably related to the drama-based process, where you are used to trying to think and feel as the character,” she added.
But could the results be reproduced with any old dramatists O’Hanlon said more research would be needed. However, she pointed out Shakespeare’s unique value: his 20,000-word vocabulary gives children a huge language improvement. Only when they act the words out with their whole bodies does this effect come to life.

The warm, pleasant smell of your grandma’s freshly baked cookies — that specific smell alone can unlock vivid memories of her kitchen and your childhood. But like vision and hearing, our sense of smell fades with age, affecting many people over 50.
This loss is more than an inconvenience — it’s an early warning sign. Losing your sense of smell is linked to worsening memory, cognition (认知), and overall well-being, as well as serious brain illnesses like dementia and depression. Scientists have long recognized this decline as an early sign of Alzheimer’s. “Our brains need stimulation (刺激) from our sense of smell to stay healthy,” said Professor Michael Leon, a scientist at the University of California, Irvine.
Fortunately, this decline in smell may be curable through simple treatments like smell training. In a 2022 study, seniors with depression who trained their noses for several months saw their problems decrease. Another 2021 study found it improved depression and word recall in dementia patients. Some studies even showed that smell training, involving the mindful and repeated smelling of different kinds of scents, can help make the memory part of the brain stronger.
So, what can we do to improve our sense of smell and potentially support our brains
Professor Thomas Hummel offers a simple starting point: “Find strong-smelling household items like spices or coffee. Smell each for about 30 seconds, morning and evening.” He emphasizes that the goal is mindful awareness, and varying scents are beneficial. For example, you can visit a grocery store to explore different scents, or try other strong-smelling things at home. However, he warns that “this is not a guaranteed cure”. Anyone with long-term problems should see a doctor, as a loss of smell could also come from a viral infection.
