A long-overlooked immune organ, the thymus (胸腺), proves to be a hidden indicator of the length of human life, disease risk and cancer treatment outcomes, according to two studies published in Nature by researchers from Mass General Brigham.
For decades, scientists held a fixed belief: the small chest organ gradually gets smaller after puberty (青春期) and stops playing a vital role in adult health, for it produces fewer new T cells, immune cells guarding against infections and illnesses. Thus, the thymus was rarely included in large-scale population research.
To open new “avenues” for related medical study, the team applied AI technology to analyze routine CT scans from over 27,500 adults. They measured the thymus’s size and structure to create a thymic health score. Data showed adults with higher scores gained striking health benefits: roughly 50% lower all-cause death risk, 63% lower heart and blood vessel death risk and 36% reduced lung cancer risk, even after excluding the interference of age and other health conditions. Researchers explained poor thymic health cuts T-cell diversity, weakening the immune system’s ability to spot cancer or other diseases. Besides, smoking, overweight and chronic inflammation (慢性炎症) are confirmed to damage thymic health.
Another separate experiment tracked more than 1,200 cancer patients receiving immune treatment. Patients with healthier thymuses had a 37% lower cancer progression risk and 44% lower death risk, which indicates the thymus state largely affects the effect of modern cancer immune treatment and opens new avenues for cancer treatment.
The scientists emphasize that additional studies will be needed to confirm the results. They also note that the imaging technique used to measure thymic health is not yet ready for routine use in clinical practice. Though unhealthy lifestyles connect with poor thymus, the studies fail to confirm whether adjusting these habits can recover thymic function. Further research will explore hidden factors affecting thymic health.

A little over 50 years ago, these species were among the first group of animals that received protection from the federal government in the United States. Once nearly extinct, all three species bounced back thanks to a law called the Endangered Species Act.
Uncontrolled hunting and habitat destruction drove many wildlife toward extinction. Early laws failed to stop species decline, so stricter new legislation (立法) was needed. Then in 1969, an oil machine at sea off the coast of California burst, creating the worst oil spill in the United States at the time. It dumped three million gallons of oil into the ocean, covered the beaches in slick, black oil and killed thousands of animals. Public anger pushed President Nixon to promote the official passage of the Endangered Species Act in 1973.
The act officially defined endangered species, protected plants and invertebrates (无脊椎动物) for the first time, restricted hunting listed animals, provided saving funds and safeguarded critical animal habitats. Around 99 percent of listed species are saved from extinction, and more than 200 species would have disappeared without this legislation.
The law still has some critics: They don’t like that it limits how land can be used, which some people think hurts businesses and private landowners.
